Mother of the groom dress!

My son is getting married next fall. I want to find my dress sooner rather than later. I stand tall at six feet. Bridesmaids are in blue and really I would like to avoid blue because I’ve worn blue all the time. The bride is amazing and she will be sewing her own dress, so I want to be elegant but not over the top. Here are some photos of me in dresses I have tried. My favourite is the first but It is outrageously expensive though the designer will alter it to your specifications and you can choose the colour! Anyway, I love the style, but the length is too short. I prefer mid calf. My daughter also says that a 3/4 length sleeve looks like the dress is too small on me. Btw I live east of Toronto in Canada. So, thoughts? I would LOVE opinions! ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you!

What time is the wedding ceremony, and what time is the reception?

I see why you like #1, and believe you could find similar ‘off the rack’ if you find the outlay for something custom too great. I like the colour of #4, but #10 is my favourite. It flatters your enviable figure, and will photograph well - particularly in nighttime or candlelight shots. #2 is exciting (and another flattering choice) but too much black (IMO) for a wedding.

The shorter jersey dresses don’t seem special enough for MOTG.

FWIW, party dresses go on deep discount after the holidays. You might like to find a dress now, and stalk it. If it isn’t available on sale in January, you still have more than half a year to find something. I would spend a day in the Hudson Bay flagship store’s formal wear department now, if you haven’t already.

Agree with Carla about #10 being a stand out, but it depends on the time an venue. Love the green dress but is much less formal. More information please !

Carla, It will be an afternoon wedding in a small but lovely Catholic Church and a reception in a Croatian hall (it's all about the food!) My son is hiring a fiddler and a caller! This is not going to be a very formal affair, but it of course I still want to look fab.

Thank you for your compliments. Yes, I wonder about #10. Maybe I should just go with it. It is in Whitby (Ribkoff?), on sale and if it is still there, wasn't a ridiculous price either. The other you like is from Melanie Lynn. It feels like a lot of dress! #1 is from the Bayview Village Mall. I'm not going in there again. lol

Jaime, Which green dress? The high necked one? I do like that style.

Joseph Ribkoff makes nice clothes, and some of them are ‘Made in Canada’ which is an added bonus!

I like #2, #10 and #11 ( that looks like Eliza J dress that comes in different colors - like teal, black, peach depending on season ).

What fun! I like the first dress as well as #8 which Jamie mentioned. I’m going to disagree about #10 especially for an afternoon wedding. I think the jewel colors and the shorter lengths of the others just look wonderful on you. Good luck and keep us posted!

Would the designer do a longer skirt for the first one?

Otherwise, two and ten stand out for me. Whatever you choose, feel fab and have fun! Sparkle in the afternoon if you want to. Life is short.

I like #6, #8 and #11 best. They are not blue and look like they would accommodate any changes in your body before next fall. That will eliminate some worry.

I like 9 and 11 best. That said I also think black is a bit somber for a happy occasion.

#1 is lovely but if its not in your budget, I also like #4, I think the burgundy looks fab on you and it seems just right for a less formal wedding. Add some dressy shoes, a pretty clutch, a nice hair accessory, and perhaps even long gloves to dress it up even more if you like.
Luckily, there is still plenty of time to continue the looking if your really after something more like #1, the stores may have more stock coming out soon with the holidays coming.

I like 6 very much, short but very festive-and you might want something you can move esy and quickly in?! Then, from the long ones, 5,9&10 are all gorgeous! How exciting to have such a great event in your family!!!:-)

Oh my! Thank you all for your replies! I think I will continue my search.

A dress that is not too formal.
Something that is mid calf (midi?).
Sleeves.
Green, aubergine or burgundy.

That first dress was $1100, which is not in my budget.

I am also looking on Poshmark and in thrift stores/kijiji etc. If I know the general style, then I think I can be successful there.

Like Greenjeans I am green fan and I love #8 - but it honestly looks more like nice office wear to me, or something to be dressed up with a scarf for a meal out, not MOG wedding attire. I would definitely pick it up if you have need for something like that!
I tend to agree with #10 overall. I don't love the shorter or arm-baring options, they just don't feel as elegant for your role and the occasion. I also feel that it's flexible - could serve at a fairly formal occasion as well as something more medium dressy. So you won't look overdressed or underdressed. And the silver makes it more festive and celebratory than something that is mostly black, while keeping the skirt black does bookend your hair, eyes and brows. You will look fab!

Late weighing in but I agree with notsaf - 1 and 8 were my favourites. It sounds like you've got a good strategy going forward and are much more clear on what you are looking for, which is great!

Congratulations on the wedding! And I agree about Bayview Village lol ... I feel it costs money just to say it

I think #8 is a standout like a few others. Something about that colour and silhouette reads very chic!

I like #1 best too - IF you can have it made to the lengths you like. Longer in the torso, and a midi length skirt! That's first prize

Ok before I read everyone comments my fav are #4and #10 (but I also like #2, & if #1 was 4 inches longer, it would be by 1st choice)
if it’s a formal wedding ,#10 100%

What a lot of fab choices! It really depends on the dressiness of the event. Is the reception an evening reception? (With the wedding in the afternoon)? And will there be dancing as well as food?

My thoughts, FWIW: I love #2 and #11 on you but not sure they read MOTG, exactly.

#8 is gorgeous but does not feel festive enough to me; however, it would be a GREAT choice for a rehearsal dinner!

#1 is lovely but it sounds like you would have to do some work to get it made for you in the right proportions. Would you wear it again, do you think?

It looks like we all have different opinions! My favourite is actually #4, the burgundy. This is assuming it is not quite so formal. ( If much more formal I like # 10).
The 2 different sleeves on the burgundy are interesting and to me the silver accents give a slam dunk to get accessories in that colour. I would be looking for a short bolero in silver. I would like to be able to ship you the silver sandals and clutch I got for being MOB in 2019! But NZ to Canada is a bit far

I agree with your direction. I think mid calf is so elegant and also modern classic. I think all these work - my least favourites are 6 - flattering but a bit dated - and 9 - you don’t shine as much as in the others. I think all the others are wonderful depending on your vibe and also budget.

Wow! So many opinions! It's nice that it seems I can't go wrong.

Yes, I love love love the first, but as Helena said even SAYING Bayview Village Mall costs money. ha ha. Most of these dresses, other than the first were about the same price except for #2 and #3, which were $400.

The others were between $100 - $200. Either full price or on sale.

Angie, this is what the lady at the store told me. They can make the sleeves longer as well as the torso and the length. Many people don't realize that torso is a problem which is not easily solved when one is tall.

I was telling a friend of mine about my shopping experiences and she offered to make me a dress! So, maybe I will get the first one, though simplified. I think this will be the style I will like most. I really do not feel fab in dresses to the knee. They are OK, but I do prefer a mid calf length.

In the end, I'm thrilled with my son's choice of bride. He could not made a better decision. These too are perfect for one another!
