More shorts - market day 6.13.20

This is my favourite kind of summer errand-running weather : 22C, breezy and sunny. Just temperate enough to warrant a third piece, which makes me far less self-conscious than I would be in plain shorts and a plain cut t. I made a stop at the garden centre/boutique to scout a couple of birthday gifts for family (all of us have June bdays) , another stop at my favourite market garden , and then a quick stop in at the drug store for the Saturday Globe &Mail. I'm now set for the weekend!

I've taken an interest in local women who make a business out of thrifting , charging a small markup (ok, maybe it's a big one, but as long as the price works for me, I'm fine with it!) curating a "shop" and reselling . They run their businesses on Instagram, and it's all done by etransfer and contactless pickup. Maybe you've all been into this for ages - what do I know? I've been picking up some home goods, some accessories and the odd clothing item, and really having fun with this! It's scratching my itch for home accessories with personality , and my new interest in buying preloved clothing and accessories when I can. This jacket and scarf are both from one business, called Pop & Em. I'm kicking myself for not getting into this myself years ago - although Instagram wasn't even an idea back then (and it's the perfect platform for this ) but man, the stuff I gave away that someone is likely buying and reselling ??? I could have made a small fortune

Shoe note: just realized all of my "good" summer sandals/slides/wedges etc are from Fly. Never saw that one coming. I used to think they were too kooky, but they have some really great styling now. I probably have 7-8 pair at this point.

Anyways - all outfit comments, suggestions welcome as always. And tell me about second day hair - can you do it? Mine is ok for days when I don't need to be out or see anyone, and I really should have washed it this morning . By midafternoon it's a gross disaster. No movement whatsoever. Probably all the product I goop into it. I also promise you that my head is not as giant as it looks in photos. Seriously. I have a little face and head, according to my hair stylist. Odd camera angle I think.

Do you mean Fly London for the shoes? Very comfortable brand, although too wide for my own feet.

Yes , Fly London . I always refer to them as just Flys. Some new styles are quite narrow .

Absolutely perfect! Your2nd day hair looks fantastic too. I really like the neutral color palette on you—just enough color to not looked washed out as neutrals sometimes seem to do. The green is so pretty with your hair. The scarf accent on the purse is a nice touch too! Fab head to toe!

I like this colour palette for you. The green is always fabulous with your skin and eyes. I have not heard of this Instagram concept. I will check it out.
I have one pair of Flys. They killed my feet but that means nothing. Most shoes make me miserable. I only wore them once. Maybe I should start an Instagram site to sell things.

This is a great colour combo - it looks fantastic with your hair and skin. And those sandals look terrific! I should check out Fly again. I have always been between sizes in them, alas. But lasts do differ and maybe I can find a pair that works. Some of the styles are a bit too kooky for me, too, but not all, and they are great for comfort because of the soles.

Lisa, I think buying thrifted things from resellers is the *perfect* solution for you. Knowing that you don’t like to root through a million bad things to find that one gem, why not pay a markup to have someone else do the work - and end up with the treasure? What a great solution! I look forward to seeing your treasures

You might like this short article. I like the part, quoted from a book, referencing an older generation who “would accumulate things over a lifetime and value the process.” I know a woman who sold all her silverware at a yard sale because she couldn’t be bothered to polish it.

Love the combination of navy with olive and the polka dot scarf is a fab accessory with your bag. Of course, I love me some Fly London shoes! I have 4 pairs and almost came home with a fifth pair this afternoon. Alas, they were a little too small.

Fly London has really grown on me - and I appreciate that they are a little different from everything else out there. They happen to fit me perfectly , and are the single most comfortable shoes I own . I love that I can get some height without sacrificing comfort .

I now very much regret how much of my mother’s and my own old things I’ve given away . I have a complicated relationship with “ stuff” and the death of a parent , and a major move of my own exacerbated it . When we moved I purged my massive collection of vintage dishes , textiles and general home decor ....thinking I had this marvellous opportunity to start fresh . Well , those things collected throughout a lifetime are what gives both a home and a wardrobe personality , and I see it lacking in my own . I’m happy to have someone else do the hunting and picking , cleaning and polishing for me - that part isn’t fun . I like fitting them into my home and wardrobe . I’m focused on textiles mainly ( linen and cotton napkins, wicker and straw placemats ) and any vintage vases and candleholders I can find . Barwear too .

When you edit your wardrobe, why don’t you see if some of these resellers to see if you can trade some of your unwanted items for their merchandise? I really life your ankle jewellery that was the birthday gift to self. These subtle yet stylish details are classic LisaP, and always make your WIW posts inspirational.

You made me laugh about your head looking big in selfies, which I have NEVER thought about you. I have one big hand in my selfies, because the hand holding the phone is out in front and looks twice the size of my other hand. It always freaks me out when I see the pictures.

The shorts are perfect on you and I always love olive green with denim blue. Don't see a big head, just a gorgeous red-headed one!
And, well, I have been reselling for years, I am one of those, but mostly do it through consignment shops - plus big ticket items on The RealReal, Ebay and Etsy. More and more insta-shops have opened locally though, so I might have to try that .

Jaime - I didn’t realize you are a reseller . Is there $$ to be made doing this ? Or is it mostly for fun ? I’m not sure if I have the skills necessary to set up a Instagram page with pro looking photos - I can barely photograph my self !

My kind of outfit, I really like every detail. The ankle jewellery is very interesting, I have a copper chain with little sea crabs and red balls (sounds odd but it is cool, hand-made by a relative). Yours is unusually not a chain, is it comfortable? I have also a polka dot scarf that I have been threading through my handbag mainly because it doubles as a face mask for going into stores, but it also adds something to an outfit. Your second day hair looks good to me!

What a stunning color combo on you, Lisa! Shopping secondhand sounds like a great idea for wanting unique, preloved pieces that still have some life left. We used to make the flea market circuit in California - there are great treasures to be had if you don’t mind waiting until they find you

Love the outfit! The scarf adds a bit of light-hearted fun, and the olive and denim look fabulous on you. I do second day hair but usually do not go out with it without a hat. Sometimes a bIt of dry shampoo and using a hot hair iron or curling iron gives it a boost if needed but it is almost easier to wash it. Your hair looks cute and suits your small head and face. You would not want it too flat.

Love it! This is so you — simple but chic in its casual vibe, with careful attention to details.

I like some Fly styles but found three sandals I tried last year too wide too. But they were more cage style. I have one pair of their booties that are sooo comfortable but only because I can wear thick socks and lace them tighter. Those slides are awfully cute though and will make me take a second look in the future.

Oh, as for second day hair, I always found that the shorter my hair is, the less I can get away with going longer between shampoos. When it’s longer it’s more forgiving. The amount of product I use makes a difference too.

Star - thank you The one piece is an ovoid 'bangle' so shaped specifically for the ankle. The other piece is indeed a chain which is adjustable (designed for the ankle as well) . I'm lucky in that I have small and defined ankles, so jewellery is super-comfortable. My only fear is losing them and not noticing .

Janet - when I first bought these slides, I debated quite a few days before wearing and committing. They struck me as veering toward too orthopaedic and matronly ....and for the first year, I was still a little self conscious in them. But after wearing them enough, I stopped caring or noticing the frump factor, and they've become total workhorses. I also really love having a blue sandal for summer that isn't navy.

Brooklyn - 22C is typical here in June . It does get a lot, lot warmer in July and August I love this weather though ! As to Insta "shops" - they aren't shops so much as they are the pages made by resellers who feature their latest finds - usually in stories . You send a message enquiring about the status of what you like, and if available, it's sold to the first person to do an etransfer. It's pretty fun, actually, and these women take great care to wrap up your purchases in boho-vintage style (that's just who I follow though ) including sweet little notes, and it's all very pleasant ! Following one usually leads you to a few more, and I now have a little group of about 6-7 women I look at every day. Some specialize in high-end mid-century furniture too, and it's swoon worthy.

My second day hair means dry shampoo and no other product- but often hitting it with a heated brush too to force it (temporarily) into submission!

Very good! I hear you on the shorts and top for going out thing. I also like wearing a jacket with shorts, so in order not to be seasonally confused, it has to be a light cotton or linen blend utility or safari type thing. I also like wearing a button front shirt, untucked, with shirts but try to choose ones that look more structured & somewhat polished.

Love, love, love this. I'm so tempted to go full lemming mode. I've been interested in olive camo lately, and found that exact tshirt at Macys.com for a very low price, plus some olive Bermudas that might be a good replacement pair for me. The fly sandals are really nice, you have such great shoes! And the denim jacket is so great and different from the usual. Great inspiration as always!

Thanks Chris! The t-shirt is a cheap one, but I've worn it a few times so far this summer and am quite happy with it ! I like that it's faded, which makes it a little unique!

unfrumped - if I had and wore button downs, I'd wear them in the way you described too. I think I have one, and it's a pale blue linen. Might have to try it with some shorts one day!

I volunteer at a thrift shop and we have customers that do just what you describe. Some of the other members get mad when they sweep through the place buying all the good stuff. But I say they’re paying what we ask!
