More coats: your opinion?

Both JCrew coats are going back. The grey hooded was too shapeless; the black collarless, which I loved, was not warm enough for the winter (too lightweight overall, and I started to worry about my neck). Shopping for a winter coat for Maine is HARD.

I just found these two on the Bloomingdales site. It's the last day of Friends & Family, so 20% off (if these are not excluded).

#1: I like the military look of the Elie Tahari, but I wonder if the back is
too poofy. Plus, they only have a 6, which could work great or could be
big.

#2: I like the feminine but still sleek look of the Trina Turk, plus it looks cozy. But I have no experience with Alpaca.

What do you think? Are either worth trying, given my need for warmth and my general style?

I like both . I have a lot of coats, so feel quite "experienced" with them I'm in a coat all day for a lot of the winter - I don't have an office I go to and then promptly take my coat off. Belted coats often drive me a bit nuts , especially when worn open. The belt is always slipping loose or dangling off of one side, getting caught in the car door, touching the floor when seated, say , in a coffee shop, etc. You know what I mean. I love alpaca because it's so rich and luxurious looking - and also extremely warm. Can't quite tell from the pic, but it looks like it's a faux back belt - right? That's super flattering too. Looking forward to seeing both on you!

btw - I really loved that black collarless coat on you - to the point where I am eyeing one in BR right now.

Totally agree with Lisap on the belt situation, especially if it's all that's holding the coat together (realize that's not the case here). I like the military look but I think you can find something less fussy. The second coat is nice but I don't know exactly what about it isn't calling to me. Will go look at some coats for you now - what colors did you have in mind?

Love the structure of the elie tahari. Not to talk you into anything...but Burberry has this coat that you might like --also comes in a cream-ish color. not sure how warm.

Love that the Trina Turk is alpaca--super light weight yet super warm. A-line of the second coat to me seems really wide.

If you are looking for a duffle, Burberry has this, probably too short to wear with skirts.

I like the collarless style and the militiary because they are your kinda euro mod look, but I agree this one seems fussy. The second option seems warm, but I'd have to see it on you.

Granted I'm not in Maine, but I do have experience with East Coast winters so know something about coats and snow.

Given your frame and style, I'm going to put in a plug for Mackage -- looks like (hopefully) they're included in the F&F sale. They have LOTS of nice touches -- neck pieces that zip off and can be worn up/open, leather accents, etc. Styles are fitted enough that you may want to try the XS and S.

After looking for several years to replace my wool coat and not finding the fit or slightly-off-classic style I wanted, I got a Mackage last year on a pretty good discount...just in time for a winter with lots of daytime temps in the teens and 20s(vs 50s!) and more snow than usual.

I'm so pleased with the coat's style and function. I actually LOVED not having to keep track of a scarf (though if I'd wanted to zip off the wool neck piece, I could have worn whatever). When walking in the coat on those cold days I was so warm I often had to wear it open so I think it would work fine for you...the wool is very thick. [ETA 70% wool + 10% cashmere and 20% polyamide.]

Una, I'm definitely leaning toward black. Could possibly be convinced of navy or camel. Possibly. But not a bright -- my peacoat is bright pink so I'm covered there. I love the idea of a black coat.

BJ1111: Thanks so much for those ideas. Definitely not a duffel coat - I want it to be able to dress up, and I don't think those do very easily. And Burberry is just out of my price range. $600 is the limit for me.

Angie has talked this JCrew cocoon up quite a bit. Thoughts on this? Or the wool trench? Also adding a Cole-Haan I spied online.

Viv, the black coat is part of your coat capsule - for less cold days. I vote keep it. You are not after one coat to rule them all. You are after a capsule that showcases an assortment of coats. Unpack that coat.

I advice against a coat with a robe tie. I love the Trina. And try the JC cocoon coat, and the Cole Haan coat.

I know the Mackage coat well, Viv. It has quite a large fussy collar, but it's warm and well made. It's also quite breezy in front - which would personally drive me crazy, but it could work for you. If you're fine with these quirks - try it. xo

I echo everything the others have said here. All gorgeous options, but not necessarily easy to wear. I love the style of the military one but hate the fuss of front tie belts on coats. The Trina looks great -- alpaca blends are lovely to wear. Super soft, lightweight, and even more water resistant than wool.

Now I need to find the thread with the collarless coat -- I somehow missed it!

I'm afraid that style you showed is one for women walking from car to door who aren't at risk for frozen nether regions.

I'm was thinking more of the Kathryn (#1) for you if you wanted belted (would want to know how it looked on you sans belt and with just the asymmetrical zip in case the belt drove you nuts).
