I made an appointment for a haircut at 5:30 pm today. A little late in the day for a first consult, but what the heck. I was going to Yelp places, but this morning I decided instead to walk Hipster Main street and just look in at salons.
I bypassed:
- The salon with Ghost chairs. I have Ghost chairs, don't get me wrong, but I was struck by a desire for more hair, less decor.
- The Brazillian blowout salon because I'm back in the gritty city and am wallowing in my natural RATE-ness again.
- The all-white salon where an Asian lady was giving another Asian lady The Bob. Yes, I'm afraid of all that Joy Luck Club-ness. I admit it! It scares me!
- The hip but not hipster place. I saw a lot of No-Style style haircuts in there. You know, lots of Lululemon. I don't have that kind of restraint.
I went for... haha... the place with the stylist with dyed red hair pinned up helter-skelter with Depression-inspired hipsterness.
I'm trying to think what I should tell the lady now... I want long braidable hair, I want it to be wash-and-wear cool, not too polished, my hair has some pretty out-of-control wave that starts out as curly when I air dry...
...Can I tell the lady I have RATE style? Will she get it?
