Lounge wear options: Do you wear your good casuals at home?

I am a very messy person in the kitchen :D... When I was working I would just put on some PJs once I was home cook , eat a, and sleep.
Now that I am home, I am doing much more cooking... And to add to that I have people dropping over just to give me company ...
I never know who will drop in and when... I am not sure I want to be in PJs :)...

Just wanted to know what do you guys do so that I can have some ides

I struggle with this so much and I will watch the posts for suggestions. I have a wonderful wardrobe, but when I am at home, I rarely wear anything that could get dirty or stained (in the kitchen). That means I dress like a bum. I too worry about who may drop in. Yesterday the mail man caught me in my robe and he was embarrassed.

Any suggestions from other posters will be greatly appreciated because my "lounging capsule" is nonexistent and should be defined. Thank you.

When I was a student, I would change into loungewear the second I came home - loose t shirts, track pants etc. But now that I am home all day, I feel dull in clothes like that. So I make it a point to put on some nice clothes every day. Nothing fancy, just my shorts and t shirts from my casual summer wardobe. It helps me feel less sloppy and more confident plus it is nice to be dressed nicely when my husband comes home. Also, I can run out for errands any time!

I change into nice, washable loungewear when I get home from work. Shorts and cute tops in summer, jeans or lounge pants in winter. Or if I've hit the gym on the way home, I stay in my gym gear. And I always wear an apron in the kitchen.

That's so me.. but guess what I wear around the home.. yes, a dress! I have some denin dresses that are just a bit too big and I wear them around the house! I found them so pratical: just wash and go!

I change into my loungewear which is mostly Gap Body. Slouchy pants and a tee. More presentable than my pjs, but just as comfortable. I also wear an apron when I cook (which luckily for me is not often since DH prefers to do it)

Interesting.... Wide variety here from robe(Mary you had me giggling) to shorts to jeans to slouchy pants :)...
Apron does save the clothes doesn't it :)....

I do change to loungewear immediately after I get home. I wear a couple cotton dresses in summer and American eagle sweats in winter.

Interesting question. I wear my good casuals, but also some loose gym pants + tee and/or hoodie or lounge cardis that definately are not for public. Never PJ around the house.

I love Kirtis take on this because I'd like a lounge wardrobe/capsule that I can wear when going out of the house feeling confident.

This question actually puts focus on my casual wardrobe and that I need to do some editing here. This one is really hard!

It depends what you mean by "good casuals". Generally for me, anything I have bought that season comes off as soon as I get home. After a season I relax!

I have some casual outfits that never make it out of the house (except to the gym) - like tracksuit pants, and others that do, like my old bootcut jeans and my jeggings.

I wear an apron a good bit of the time at home as I am also messy in the kitchen!

I change into loungewear immediately after getting home. Like you, I hate to get cooking smells on my nice clothes. Most of my loungewear is old comfy dresses and skirts (with a tank on top), actually, that are a little pilled or shrunken or something so they don't get worn outside the house any more, but they started life as regular clothes so they still look kind of decent if maybe a bit too short. I can go out to get my mail and not worry about it, but I would probably change to go to the store or something. Occasionally when it is cold I'll wear yoga-type pants and a top, but honestly I prefer dresses or skirts for comfort. I never wear shoes in the house so all of my normally PPL pants are too long when I'm barefoot and I hate dragging hems underfoot. =P If someone was casually coming over, I'd probably change into my "good casuals" and put on a bra but I probably wouldn't bother with a whole outfit (i.e. w/ shoes and accessories, etc) like I would to go out.

ETA: I actually rarely wear PJs as loungewear since I don't want to be smelling the cooking smells at night in bed either. An apron doesn't help because it's the smells that are the problem for me.

I try to dress nicely at home, as I never know who will drop in. Also, I never know when I'm going to dash to the store and run into someone I know.

Ha - this is my life in FL! I can't just bum around in PJ's or I feel like I never got out of bed fully. I mean, there are days - snowy stay ins on the couch in Tahoe, and lazy Sunday's in bed with my sweetie - but 99% of the time I get into casual wear or recently demoted to loungewear clothing. That's shorts and skirts here mostly and tanks, or any top really. I find bottoms most constricting when sitting around the house, so I look for comfort first there, but just about any top is cozy enough for me.

EDIT: it should be noted my cooking is pretty limited. Microwave and one frying pan usually is the scale of it lol. The BF does the serious cooking.

Lol at Diana, "If someone was casually coming over, I'd probably change into my "good casuals" and put on a bra." I laughed because that's exactly what I do and I thought I was the only one who hates wearing a bra at home. The girls need to breathe every now and then!

I do save the nicer casuals for outings, wearing shorts and tees or yoga pants when lounging around. In the winter I do like to wear a semi-decent pair of jeans, makes me feel more dressed up and presentable.

ETA: I do wear an apron when cooking, which is every day.

i am very anti-bra and will grudgingly wear it. now i'm just trying to hoik up the girls to their starting position!

i have dresses made of jersey material with some shape but stretchy. essentially glorified tshirts. i wear these a lot in the summer. very wash and wear. in the winter, i wear yoga pants and a sweatshirt or matching jacket. BUT i was so proud of myself when i realized that i really have way too many "nice" cashmere sweaters that i had to start wearing them all the time so i could decrease my cost per wear. so i've been wearing them more often even over just sweats and a tee.

I too prefer not to wear a bra in the comfort of my home. I would never answer the door without a bra on though. I either have to hide or run upstairs and quickly throw one on.

I want to say one more time, my lounging capsule is a disgrace. It is comfortable, I admit that. Very easy care. But so incredibly bad looking that I would be embarrassed to be seen in it even to pick up the mail.

I am open to suggestions. Tee shirts and shorts don't work for me. Other thoughts?

Mary, if tees and shorts aren't an option (why not I wonder?) maybe go with jersey knit dresses.
And for the bra situation, I recently grabbed some colorful Hanes convertible bandeaus to lounge around in. Added bonus - they look like you took time to layer if you put them under a v neck top or dress lol. http://www.hanes.com/clothing/.....bra-2-pack

I answer my door all the time without my bra. =P In fact, I have posted bra-less WIWs here before too. It may be less than advisable, but oh well - it's flattering *enough* and I don't deal well with strapless bras. One of the benefits to being (somewhat) small-chested - I am a C cup, but used to be a B cup and sometimes wish I could go back to that - yes, I used to look even more pear-ish but it was so convenient having small boobs.

If nobody is home but us, I am in pj's. My strategy is to stick to neutral camis and pj bottoms -- like black. If it's chilly (and I bat for Team Always Hot) I pop a cozy sweatshirt over. If for some reason I have to run outside for a minute, or the mailman or neighbor rings the doorbell, because the pj's are solid black, it looks like lounge wear and is not quite so embarrassing as being found in pink polka dots or a print with teddy bears.

If I'm entertaining company, I do dress up. But I will choose outfits that are loose and comfortable and afford freedom of movement, and that also work with bare or socked feet as I don't like to wear shoes in my house. So I am dressed up, but comfortable. I relax on the accessories to give it a slightly more casual feel.

To solve your problem about cooking for company, you need an apron!! A pretty one!

For xmas this past year my mom made aprons for everyone. I don't have a picture of mine handy, but here are her grandchildren wearing theirs (they were baking my parents' 50th anniversary cake). Mine is black and white checks -- very sophisticated and in keeping with my style, and also to scale for me.

Look for an apron that fits and flatters your figure, that goes with your wardrobe color scheme, that can be washed, that covers all the way down to the knee, and pockets are great too.

Aprons. Aprons. Aprons. (My grandmother would be so proud of me!)

Since I made a a resolution to wear all my wardrobe, I've discovered full-coverage aprons are my best friend. My favorite one is like a sleeveless wrap dress worn backwards. It's in a cute print, washes like a dream, and covers everything except my sleeves (which are usually rolled up). It looks almost exactly like the ones that my grandmother and mother wore in the 40s and 50s.

Unless I'm doing going to do something VERY messy, I'm fully dressed under my apron, so, if someone comes to the door or I have to run out, I just whip it off and I'm ready to go. I will wear lounge wear in the late evening after I shower or early in the morning when I first get up, but it was too easy to get into the rut of wearing yoga wear and sweats all day when I was not planning to go out.

But I do go barefoot in the kitchen, which makes my husband laugh.

I change my clothes typically when I am home but recently went through my gear and "loungewear' and tossed out anything that was just too worn, misshapen, had a hole or was frankly just embarrassing to be seen in. I saved two old faves - flannel pj bottom and one just incredibly soft tshirt for days when I am bed ridden with a cold lol.

I change into yoga pants and tank/t if I know we are in for the evening. If I think I may go out or if there are people over/outside world contact, I stick to soft jeans (like stretchy skinnies) and a nicer knit top.

I am at home most of the time, and I dress in good casuals. I want to be ready to open the door to anyone, and to go out at the drop of a hat. And to treat myself with respect.

And yes, my apron wardrobe is starting to get used more often. Saves me having to change out when I spatter or spill on myself, which is more frequent than I care to admit.

Here's a couple of examples of "full-coverage" aprons. I used to do a lot sewing and still have some vintage patterns but it's my daughter-in-law who creates all my aprons now. She has just started sewing and loves making simple, craft-style items. She claims it's her sanity-saver from her day job as a tax lawyer!

ETA: To be fair, these are just some pictures that are similar to my aprons. My apron needs laundering before it would be ready for prime-time, and my vintage patterns are on the other side of the country in my DIL's sewing room. Googling "full coverage apron" brings up lots more images.

Mo -- thank you so much for the suggestions. I have looked at the bandeaus and they do look incredibly comfortable. I will pick one up this weekend and give it a try.

I am also thinking of trying Shiny's idea of black PJ bottoms and tank tops. I LOVE tank tops and I sense this style would be quite a bit dressier than what I am currently wearing.

Well, I'm a SAHM but I have a little bit of a different lifestyle as a Pastor's wife. We live right behind the church, so we often have people from the community or church members dropping by. Because of this, I need to look my best every day. I don't wear my Sunday best every day, but I do not lounge around in pj's or sweats. I don't even own sweats and I never wear pants, so I'm always in a skirt. Today I have on a long navy cotton skirt and a simple blue and white striped nautical tee. If I have to run out I will throw on a read cardi over it. I never go out without makeup and hair done, and those are normally done when I'm at home anyway. I am always way more dressed up than others at the store (not to the nines, just chic-er).

I have the unique situation that my home loungewear is also my work wear. In a few months, I will be working with dogs in the swim spa in our back yard. I wear camisoles with built-in shelf bras, or swimsuit tank tops with the same constuction (Land's End, etc.). I'm an almost-A cup, so those work for me. For those who need more support, I've seen camisoles with soft-cup bras built in. I understand that cami's with built-in bras probably wouldn't work for those of you who have more ample bosoms. Yoga pants or sweats or jeans or shorts, with swimsuit bottoms underneath. Slip-on footwear or sandals or easy on-&-off shoes with Velcro. I dress something like my friend who is a yoga instructor, except I wear swimsuits.

P.S. Shabbychick, it's nice that you dress to show your respect for members of your church & community. I've recently started going to church, so I'm enjoying dressing up a little more now & then, although casual wear is fine at our church.
