Loud plaid bias cut madness - YouLookFab Forum

Hi guys, coincidentally as soon as I saw Nuancedreams post I realized I was actually wearing loud plaid. I’m not 100% confident in this dress. So I thought I’d post. And yes I’m an introvert and hardly ever wear plaid, geometric or angular prints or cuts. So it’s slightly out of my comfort zone. Another aspect out of my comfort zone: it’s bias cut! Usually a deal breaker for me! (Sometimes rather unflattering). Another thing out of my comfort zone; a bright white background in the print. Again often unflattering for me.
However somehow I feel this one is ok.
A slight uncertainty for me aswell is using a necklace (dark purple, looks black in the photo but definitely deep eggplant) with round shaped beads against an angular print. Do they fight or is it a good contrast?
Wearing a necklace with a print generally is tricky, I always use a solid colour from the print. What do people think of that idea? Any tips or feedback?

Oh, this is so good! A large white or ivory necklace would be great too, pick up on the sneaks. You are definitely wearing the dress, not the reverse, in part because it is sleeveless.

Love the plaid and the dress! looks great on you. To me this isn't a loud plaid, but more of a dressy, classy plaid, quite beautiful. I like Roberta's suggestion of a necklace.

Looks great! I don't have a general rule about necklaces - as with most things I try it and look in the mirror and decide if it improves things.

Re the necklace, I love the idea of one with lighter beads as an alternative, esp. with these shoes, but I think this one also works well.

Roberta, Suz, MsMaven, nuancedream, Jaime: thank you as always for your feedback. Now, a white necklace to bookend the shoes is such a good idea; now why didn’t I think of that?? And Jaime, your idea of just looking in the mirror to assess on a case by case basis, rather than trying to come up with concrete rules and expecting them to always work makes a lot of sense. For some reason I am always trying to make “rules” for dressing, that are inflexible. I don’t know why I have that tendency…

Love it! I would skip a necklace altogether as the print is busy enough. Maybe a white cuff or earrings instead?

Star: a cuff is a good idea! Earrings I felt might somehow be a bit much… but a cuff I could see working, there’s a big expanse of “blank canvas” on those totally bare arms.

Oh this looks really good on you, I like the cut on the bias, such a playful pattern. The necklace looks nice and I would also try a lighter coloured one to go with your white sneakers.

Beautiful dress on you. I would look for a floral silky scarf with the same colors as the dress, but I love to wear scarves. Or you could do as LJP suggests and sub in bracelet(s) / and or earrings. The black beads of the necklace look fine to my eye, too.

Such a cool dress! And great use of white sneakers (even as a sneaker lover I feel they are overused in stock photos as some kind of default, but they can also truly be the best choice as is the case here). I don’t feel the dress is loud or wearing you; it’s kind of a case of the sum being less than the total of the parts, but in a good way!

Thanks everyone for your helpful replies and advice re: accessory/completer piece. I scrounged around the Internet and found some simple options that might work…..also may be handy just generally as a wardrobe items… just brainstorming….

The colors are harmonious on you! Yes to a bracelet, or multiple bracelets, instead of a necklace with it.
