Londoners: everyone ok?

I'm reading some scary things about London right now -- these riots sound terrifying. Louise, Fiona, Ele (if you're lurking), anyone else in the London area -- are you doing alright?

We are ok, although a lot of the rioting last night was close to where we live. It is complete and disgusting thuggery - no justification at all.

We had rioting in Birmingham though thankfully I am about 10 miles away from the centre so we saw no problems. I sat up listening to the local radio till midnight and then got spooked by any little noise when I turned out the light to go to bed!!! x

I heard it was the reaction to the news about job cuts. that's quite a reaction. in the US they're cutting all kinds of stuff like social security and no one riots.

The event which initially sparked things off was the death of a man in a shooting by police. A peaceful protest against his death by family and friends was hijacked and matters escalated from there.

As ButterflyLady says, most people think these "rioters" are just taking advantage of the situation to be lawless, looting thugs

Back from meeting Jean and Inge. Had a great time. Where we were was no where near any of the problems last night.

What happened last night was nothing to do with the police shooting or job cuts. It was vandals and thugs taking advantage of a stretched police force.

We're on holiday in Cornwall and can't quite believe the pictures we're seeing from other parts of the country. Hope it will be better tonight - they have over double the numbers of police in London tonight.

Fi, glad to hear the gathering went well! And also glad to hear that our other Londoners are doing fine.

(From what I understand it's basically gangs outdoing one another. A gang member was killed by police, the event mishandled. There was a peaceful protest, which was hijacked by gang members. This group posted/shared the stuff they had looted, then other gangs started trying to out-do each other.)
