Lol. Went to LA, not far but boy is the style different. First Shorts! I didn’t know people really wore shorts, but they do!

Second, white sneakers, just like in the magazines. In fact, sneakers sneakers sneakers. Sneakers with everything. My brother, Mr Lace-up, even sported a pair (navy, non-athletic). We visited the street where all the sneaker heads go to line up for the latest collector issue.

Third sneakers, shorts and long socks! (I’ve decided you absolutely need a particular build to do this successfully.)

Also: flip flops as shoes (totally weird to see people still doing that).

And finally, black tees. There was a point, we were having a long dinner on the patio lounge of a restaurant, and every single other person was wearing a black tee. I have to be honest, they all looked like waiters, being dressed in the same thing... lol.

Over here flip flops are our version of sneakers! Everyone wears them all summer-even sometimes in the office Sneakers with tall socks I see too, but that's on the men "of a certain age".

You crack me up. People in the US, LOVE TO WEAR SHORTS!! Across all ages and genders. It's part of the culture.

Sneakers are the shoes of our fashion era. I'm a convert!

There are loads of black tees in Seattle too. But they mostly have meaningly slogans on them.

I'm hardly seeing flip flops around here, actually. Makes sense for beachy LA though.

Fun fashion report! Thanks, Rachy. Interesting about the shorts. I’m wondering if shorts are becoming mainstream in Europe too? It’s been quite a few years since I’ve been there. My aging feet say thank goodness for sneakers!!!

Oh yes: this is an important point. The black tees were just plain black tees. No graphic, no slogan. I just don’t know about this...

Fun fashion report.

Re the black tees: People might feel more "dressed" or "urban" in black tees than in white ones (which might still be associated with underwear, at least by some). But interesting that so many feel the same.

Debora, in my part of Europe (Scandinavia) I saw many more shorts in the streets in the '80s and '90s than nowadays. Many young people still wear shorts in public, but most people over 25 seem to dress differently these days.

Very interesting! I don't know many people in real life who DON'T wear shorts, at least occasionally! But paired with sneakers and long socks? Yikes.Only a very few, regardless of body type, can pull off that look!
(If it's hot enough for shorts, why would you want to wear long socks??) Black tees, huh? I didn't know that was a thing.

So, I’m sitting in a cafe in Pasadena right now. I can see four women. Three of them are wearing plain black t-shirts. All four have on skinny jeans or slim-fit ponte pants. No sneakers, but footwear is all over the place—booties, sandals, flip-flops, and Toms.

Actually I saw a young woman wearing sneakers and knee high socks (both in black) on Monday. She looked great and I wondered if I could pull it off. Almost a tall boot look for summer (it was 28C here on Monday so plenty warm enough). And shorts and flip flops are summer essentials here.

Torontogirl, yes, I was thinking about this. Where are they getting the black tees? They’re not Hanes beefy tees. They aren’t the slinky Jennifer Anniston kind I don’t think, not that I noted... but someone has probably got one of those on in black... but they were the fitted kind that I saw.

Flip flops and sneakers are also big around here - something to do with the heat I would say, but this black tee thing is intriguing. I need to see these tees and ask them why they have taken over LA.

Fashintern, just regular booties. It was 80° today, which is a 20° drop from last week, so maybe people are feeling optimistic about fall.

Thank you for this intriguing report, Rachylou. I see very few women in shorts but lots of old men. They are a group that should not wear them. Too many skinny bowed legs on display. I have not seen a pair of flip flops all summer. The black tee thing is very interesting I have been seeing more button down shirts worn untucked....wild prints Hawaiian style, Route 66 themes with old cars, gas tanks and cacti are also common.

I was just in the Southland, but it was Disneyland in 90+F heat, so fashion sightings were limited to looking for the hippest Disney attire. They seriously put something in the water there that makes you think you will wear a Disney slogan tee shirt in real life.

Although, I really want this. Maybe if it were black ...
