K/R: Work dress

I returned about a billion pairs of the Sloan skinnies at BR - none worked! - but found this dress for a great sale price. I really like the length and tulip skirt, and I think it will be versatile for work with sweaters and blazers. I would like to be able to wear it alone, but do you think it just emphasizes my shoulders too much? This is a navy blue though it photographs lighter. I'm wearing it with a skinny belt - there's an elastic waist which is usually awful on me but this seems okay.

I'm also wearing a pair of Kork-Ease that have not seen use in a while but I think I'm going to start wearing them more, unless they are out of date (I'm following Jeanne's post!).

I like the sandals too! I don't think they are dated looking.

This looks really good on you imo. Shows a fab strong shoulder line without looking out of proportion. The sandals are good too.

I actually think the dress looks great as-is -- the tulip skirt creates a lovely curve and fakes a bit of a hip that balances your shoulders nicely. Not that I have anything against a strong IT shape!

I actually have the print version of this dress (er, times 2 in different prints...nabbed at mega-beginning-season sale + coupon prices). So insanely comfortable, you will be in luv.

Your proverbial mileage may vary, but I prefer to wear mine with jackets that hit at the high hip and have either some curve or strong diagonal lines to them (like your Theory). In the attached photo I'm wearing it with the black blazer, but I also pair it with the taupe one I've shown with something else.

For a more casual vibe I've paired it with slouchy cardigans that hit low hip -- for me that length works with the dress when the layer is a sweater but looks awkward in a blazer. [Probably because the cardigan curves along my sadly straight hip line a bit more that the blazer.]

Just play around and find your personal sweet spots, and enjoy!

Thanks, Vix! I have been trying various jackets and finding the same as you - plus I don't want obscure any actual hipline, fake or not! I just ordered this dress in red as well - with my goal of having a small, easy, functional work wardrobe I figure duplicates are helpful when they are so easy to wear.

Length/shape/color combined take this dress beyond the typical conservative work sheath. I think it will be a great addition to your wardrobe. I'm a fan of strong shoulders, and the skirt gives some balance and softness. You could wear a necklace, either a longer one or a statement necklace to draw the eye down or in toward your face, if you like. I don't believe it requires a jacket!

As for the shoes -- this type of shoe is always "in" for the women who has the flair to carry its boldness.

I think that dress is a go. Whatever the shoulders are doing (slight cut in?) I like them on you. Great color, from what I can see, and judging from what Vix said, a duplicate in red would be very useful. The sandals are nice and substantial and I love the bright color. I would wear them with confidence whether they are 'in' or not, because they look very "Una".

IKWYM about those kind of sleeves--not always the most IT friendly. In this case, I think the angle of the sleeve is shoulder minimizing. I didn't look at the picture and instantly think Team Linebacker! I like how the elasticated waist nips in too--super flattering. LOVE the color.

I still like the Kork-Ease. They look like classic 70s, and exactly like a pair of KE would look new in store right now.

The dress drapes beautifully, like silk. I like the shoulder line. The colour is just beautiful on you and the yellow sandals give a nice quirky touch.

Glad other members of the IT team -- and those with other shapes, of course! -- are weighing in with their pro-dress perspective.

I forgot to mention this above but --

Especially since you're thinking of ordering a duplicate, one thing I will advise is to check the rear view for cling + transparency in sun etc. (The double layers in the front provide some camo, but the back...not so much).

I was pretty &)#_% annoyed about the dress only being lined from the waist UP. It wasn't a deal breaker for me as I routinely wear slips and got the dress for so much less than the original price, but really -- bad/cheap decision, BR.

Awesome dress - the minimal style looks great on you. And the shoes dont seem out of date to me, although the peak of clog wearing seems to have gone by this time around.
