K/R: Sapphire blue man coat - YouLookFab Forum

I have been stalking this coat forever, and finally got it on sale. I love it, and my husband loves it on me, but when I showed one of my daughters, her immediate reaction was "It's too big. Why would you want something that makes you look bigger than you are?" So then I started doubting myself.

I do believe this is the right size. I tried the next smaller size, and while I liked how it looked I don't think I could have layered under it.
It's called an oversized coat, so it's not meant to be close fitting, and that's what I was looking for. I want a fluid, slightly loose fit.
But this was an expensive coat, even on sale, so I want to be sure.

I welcome your opinions, on fit and how it looks in general on me. Here I'm wearing it over a blazer which is probably as bulky as anything I'll wear under it.

It looks intentionally oversized and sleek --- gorgeous on you! It doesn't make you look big. She just may be used to a more fitted aesthetic.

I can't get past that gorgeous color. Not really sure on the size, it doesn't look big to me, but it's definitely not a fitted coat.

As someone who generally hasn't embraced the oversize trend....

This coat is GREAT!!! You look beautiful and chic and you should definitely keep it! Don't second-guess yourself, your instincts are perfect

You look stunning. The colour is soooo perfect on you, and I think the fit looks good. It may look slightly big across the back, but not in any way baggy or sloppy. The sleeves appear to be the perfect length, too. Unfortunately, some people feel that if something isn't hugging every curve, it is "too big", and that is simply not the case. This is a sleek, skimming coat, and I LOVE it on you.

I love the color, it looks great from the front but the back view looks a little big but not bad. It shouldn't fit like a blazer, I say keep, you look fab.

Ceit, that may be it. My daughter has a different body type from mine and strongly prefers fitted styles, partly because they look better on her.
LBD, Thanks for the vote of confidence on my instincts! It would be funny if DD came around to oversized fits, although I don't foresee it happening.

I was sort of surprised to see the back view because it looked bigger than I thought. I kept going back and forth with the smaller size because it did look nice, but honestly I think this one fits the way it's supposed to, and not being able to layer under the smaller one was a deal breaker.

I think you should keep it as it looks great on you but I also understand where your daughter is coming from. At YLF, we are used to seeing many new styles that other people are not as very few people wear them. For example, the light coloured bottoms that many of the fabbers totally rock on the forum, I have yet to see one person wearing it in real life other than myself.

Anna, A Jil Sander vibe is A-OK with me! It's a Burberry coat, and the fabric and construction are so nice. I didn't want to mention the brand up front because I didn't want it to influence anyone's opinion.

Mona, You make a good point. I think we are exposed to a wider variety of looks that aren't totally mainstream. Seeing people here wearing trendy pieces or combinations makes me feel more comfortable being a little bolder, and that's a nice benefit of YLF!

It's supposed to be somewhat oversized, but I think it's fine because it fits in the shoulders and hangs well. The side view is perfect.

Also wondering if your daughter (being young) has only really ever seen the body con era fits, so it will take longer for her eye to adjust - especially if body con suits her well!
It's a beauty, and does not make you look bigger - very flattering!

I've been contemplating color in my own wardrobe quite a bit lately, so first I have to echo the others and say that this color is absolutely stunning on you. The front and side views look great. There does appear to be a bit more material across the back than you need, even for an oversized look. If it doesn't bug you, then no big deal. If it does, then a tailor could fix that for you. If it were me, I might also have a tailor see if it's possible to move the band with the two buttons up a bit from hip level to waist level. All that being said, please take it with a grain of salt...I'm on the more fitted/tailored team. I say keep whether or not you choose to tailor.

It's a beautiful coat and I agree you should keep this size if you need to layer under it. You have lost weight and seem to have more IT tendencies now (or so it seems in photos). The shoulders fit fine, but maybe your daughter is seeing all the fabric around your hips, and is not "getting" the oversize style?

ETA: Just saw it's a Burberry, of course. So now you know I was not influenced by brand, only by incredible style.

I agree that it's a stunning colour on you, but it does seem a bit big at the back, especially at the shoulder line. Tough call. I have a trench that fits like this, and I'm still not sure that I shouldn't have gone with a smaller size.

DD has likely grown-up under the fitted aesthetic. She hasn't experience how fabulous it is to wear a garment that skims and slides over the body luxuriously. Even without the stretch!

The shoulder line is good and the sleeve is refined, while still allowing for some layering underneath --- in Chicago, we consider that feature an essential!
