K/R NAS - Black Leather?!?

So, I had a bit left over from saving for NAS primarily because I had such a tough time with fit. And I am just not willing to compromise anymore. Several people mentioned that leather was not as difficult as I thought, and I have been longing for a leather jacket for sometime. This one had great reviews so I tried it in two sizes.

I would not style it like this, but I chose bright pink and white underneath specifically to try to get the black to photograph better.

Pics 1-4: First size opened and closed with the pink dress and column of white
Pics 5-8: Same as above, but one size larger.

The ponte knit insets help with my pear shape as I usually end up with coats oversized on top to fit over my hips. This is more of a blazer versus an outdoor coat (at least in my climate!)

Would love some honest feedback. I have a toddler. Is this for my fantasy life? Is it too rugged for a ladylike style? Is the collar going to date it soon? Are either of these a 9.5 or better?

Well I love this on you, it fits beautifully and is extremely ladylike! I prefer the smaller size.

I'm not sure what the issue is with the toddler? Get some good leather cleaner for mishaps, you'll be fine. You can also get spray waterproofing, I,ve done this in the past and been very happy with it.

Ooo, I like it too! I can barely tell the difference in the sizes. Is one more comfortable than the other? The shoulders and sleeves look good. I think real leather will stretch a little, but I've never had a real leather jacket, maybe some others will chime in on that. I think the style is good for feminine you. It's pretty refined for a leather jacket, so I think you're good! I'd love to see it with your Winter clothes, but I can understand why you wanted to create the contrast so we could see it better.

Well, I'm going to be a bit of a spanner here because, while I think you ought to have a leather jacket in your wardrobe and this one definitely looks like a contender, I'd prefer it in another colour like taupe, cognac, soft grey--or even a purple or burgundy--to up the feminine vibe. But, having said that, if a black leather jacket works with the rest of your closet, you have my blessing to totally ignore this comment

From these - the smaller one imo. They both look good closed when open photo #1 looks good but notice the folds in photo #5 I think that is excess fabric. I'd like to see it styled too Thistle.

Definitely the smaller if you keep one. I had Gaylene's thought about the color, and I also wondered about the neckline - I would get obsessed about what neckline to wear underneath, but that is maybe my crazy and not yours.

I am conflicted Thistle, there are elements of this I like for your (and definitely the smaller size if you decide to go with this) but I would really like to see something with a bit of shape and part of thinks this is touch too long for you... but I am no expert.

I like the look of #6 but like Deborah, am conflicted. It does seem rather boxy and I do not think it is a 10.

I bought a leather jacket in a similar style at the NAS in 2003. (Sienna brand.) It was in a chocolate brown. It was a wardrobe workhorse. That jacket has been to Europe (hello St. Petersburg and Copenhagen) and to South America (Chile can get chilly even in the summer in the far south.) In other words, I wore it to death. I donated it for two reasons--weight gain and purchase of two other leather jackets, now three. I'm not really a leather person, but the right jacket can go anywhere and live as long as you want it.

I had no small children at home, so I can't say how it would hold up in that case. However, I never had to have it cleaned, and I just wiped it off and conditioned it every few months.

It is a bit long with a skirt to my eye and I agree that with your coloring you need to think about black. However, you will be wearing it during cool seasons and you will probably be wearing darker colors then. It will look great with pants and skirts are getting longer, at last.

I don't think it is too rugged for you. I'd say, if you love it, go for it.

I don't see why a toddler would preclude a leather coat. I think this looks good on you but am considering the comments about the color and wondering if you shouldn't try one or two others before you decide.

i love this, and prefer #1, but don't think that the larger one fits so much differently that if that one is more comfortable it would be a mistake to keep.
i think this jacket would be a great addition to your ladylike style, it will add a little of the unexpected, in a good way. i can see this jacket/blazer as a way to help transition some of your spring/summer dress to fall/winter.

I like the jacket and the ponte does make it fit you well (smaller size) but I do think it's a tad long to work with dresses on you and I know you wear a lot of them. I definitely think you can do leather, but I'm not sold that this is a 10 for you.
When I sold furniture I always recommended leather over fabric for people with children - much tougher. I have spray and wipes.

I love it on you too. I can see you wearing it a lot with trousers to work, or with jeans for a more casual look. Try it with your animal print booties, a fun scarf and your new fab purse and see what you think. Oh, and the smaller size looks just fine to me, and leather will *ease* a bit as you wear it.

I love the smaller size on you! And leather is actually great for kids--that's why we have leather seats in our cars. Much more stain resistant than cloth. I wear my leather jackets all the time, and I have a newborn and toddler. Spit up comes off with a baby wipe.

Tank you all for the great and honest feedback! I also ordered this jacket at DHs prodding. I wouldn't have considered spending so much if he hadn't been looking over my should ;). He is a big fan of a leather jacket for me.

I will hold onto these until it arrives!

I like it for you in the small size. I would not worry about the toddler and leather. I find leather very wipeable and resiliant. I have had the same leather sofas in off white for over 15 years - through 3 babies and toddlers and they still look great.
I think this one looks good!

The fit on the jacket is wonderful. I do think a leather jacket would work excellently with this dress. (Love the color!) but I think because of the flared skirt a cropped length would work better but that is just for this dress and I know you just put this together to show off the jacket. I love the collarless style and it looks like a good fit zipped or unzipped. I can't wait to see what else you do with this.

Well, given my previous comment, I'll be anxiously waiting to see that deep red jacket on you. As others have pointed out, a good leather jacket is quite durable and, in my opinion, looks even better as it ages.

Before deciding on size, you may want to try layering under the jacket the way you might wear it in cooler weather. You must get a leather jacket!

I actually waited to comment because I wasn't entirely sure how I felt. I like the ladylike vibe of this jacket for you. I like that it has the ponte insets. I think the smaller one seems a decent fit. But like Gaylene, I wanted to see you in a softer colour. Those of us with low contrast colouring CAN sometimes wear black well but it usually isn't our most flattering colour, and I feel that a different colour would bring you more to life. However, I also understand the versatility of black. So I'm eagerly waiting to see the red jacket.

Neckline -- I would definitely try that jacket with tops you would hope to wear it with. (Actually, try both jackets that way). For me, a collarless neckline is anathema, but you have long hair and an actual bust, which might make it perfection from a figure flattery point of view. Even so, some tops do not play well with it. So you might want to check that, especially your lovely wrap tops.

I like the smaller size alright, but i am not feeling "wow"ed by the black. I think i do find it a bit long? Maybe it is the high contrast colors youve picked for us to see the lines of the cut, and styled in as you would wear it would work better. I cant articulate it well, but I will be waiting to see the deep burgandy one you have on order. I think that color might work a bit better for you.

I love the smaller size on you Thistle and as Natalie has pointed out, leather can actually be more toddler friendly than some fabrics.

I do like Suz's suggestion of trying it with a few tops and other outfits to make sure it works with your wardrobe. If it does, I would definitely keep. I think it is flattering and has a nice ladylike vibe to it while still adding a bit of "edge".

I tried this jacket on at the store and I wanted to love it but I just didn't love the neckline. It looks good on you in pic #1 with the neckline of your pink dress. I had a v neck on like you do in pic #7 and I just didn't love those 2 necklines together. Leather is good with toddlers.
