The Eileen Fisher dress I ordered arrived today, and it's beautiful. This is a new shape for me, though, and I have a hard time being objective about anything that bares my knees. I like the dress a lot, but I don't want to keep it if it's not at least somewhat flattering, as I'd like to be wearing it a lot this summer.

Yay or nay? What do you think?

I'm not the best judge... but I think it's great! I think the proportion of the length to your overall height and how much leg is showing is really terrific. Very flattering in my humble opinion. AND it has pockets. Keep!

Your knees look fine. Is it comfortable? Is it just cool enough (JCE) for Florida? If so, it's a go. Great color, and has pockets!

On the other hand, this looks like a very versatile little number for an everyday workhorse and a feel-good WFH piece, and I'm all for things like that. I'd say keep it but ONLY if it makes your heart sing, you're looking forward to wearing it and you won't be fretting about your knees all the time.

That's my idea of a really good summer dress.

(I'd try a sit test in it, if that matters to you. There are lengths I'm fine wearing when I'm standing up that are a total no for me when I do a sit test in front of a mirror.)

I like it a lot! To my eye, the length is perfect - any longer and it would trend to dowdy in a hurry. And since it is EF, I expect that fabric has a lovely luxurious texture that we don't fully see in the picture.
Loose, just above the knee length dresses with flat or low heeled sandals are one of my favorite combos for summer. When it's hot, I just get over the fact that my legs and upper arms aren't what they used to be.
PS. Liz is right about the sitting test - not worth having to constantly tug it when you are seated.

I'm not jumping up and down, but it might be the colour that is not working . This isn't making a statement of any kind - too washed out a colour, or too basic a length? Or maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about either....

Ryce and Liz, you two are so wise about the sit test. I ran right back upstairs to try it, and have come to the conclusion that this dress is magical, because it seems to fall over more of my legs while sitting than while standing. I was fully expecting to be disappointed, but it passes with flying colors.

approprio, thank you for the honesty! I absolutely agree with you that fit and flare is my best dress silhouette, but I think I'm feeling a little burnt out on it, and need something to serve me better through heat and humidity. You've given me something to think about in terms of what's JFE for everyday.

LisaP, interesting. I do think it has a lot of texture that might not show in the photo, but also...I'm looking for an essential rather than a statement, so that might be a plus in my book. If I can wear this twice a week all summer and no one notices, I'm pretty okay with that. I have thought about wearing it with leggings, or even jeans, for work-at-home, but what I really need is something to get me through July and August misery (plus June in Orlando).

Jenn I just read your responses. Perhaps the texture of the dress is what makes it and that is not so obvious in the photo. It is certainly a great dress for hot humid weather.

Do you have any red shoes/sandals? I got what you said about the heat, and it not needing to be noticed, but it could be fun to kick it up a notch.

It's interesting Lisa thought the color was blah. I almost ordered it myself. The fabric looked so so nice. Yes, the texture doesn't show up. I loved the bluish grey color.

Pockets! That always pleases me. The fit looks spot on and no worries about your knees.

I would try and pull some of that blue color into an accessory like a comfy stretch bracelet. These 2 are from chicos. I always remove the tassle on the beaded styles and I like to buy multiples and group them with a twist.

ETA: I only looked briefly but you get the idea.

I love this dress!
I appreciate that you may prefer longer hemlines but this isn't "short", the fit looks good, I like the straighter, simple style for hot weather and I think the neckline and sleeve style is especially flattering on you. I would definitely keep it and I think you'll find it super wearable.

I like it on you - great texture and color. I think linen is one of the best fabrics for hot weather. Are you OK with the instructions to either dry clean or wash in cold water? That would be a deal breaker for me since I like to toss things in the washer & dryer.

Jenn - this is a useful easy summer dress, and like you, I'm struggling with lengths above the knee. There's just something about the proportion that can look a bit "little girl" on me, depending on the shoe worn with it. For some reason, I don't mind shorter skirts as much. We are about the same height, I believe. I also generally prefer prints or darker tones to avoid a nightgown look with a shift dress.

Can you determine if the horizontal stripes match at the side seams? Photo #3 is the only one that shows a side seam and I can't tell...with such irregular 'stripes/striations' in the fabric, maybe this doesn't matter. Just a thought...

I don't think it's too short - nothing wrong with your knees. It has a VERY nice sack frock fit. Good sleeves. Euro. FWIW, it has my thumbs up.

I also wish it wasn't grey. I clicked through the find and noted that it is described as "denim", so maybe it is more blue IRL.
Love the shape on you, and the texture. And pockets! It will be perfect for summer. If you like the colour, I say go for it.
And definitely not too short. You have lovely knees.
