For a while now I’ve been looking for a long sleeve navy knit dress. Something that would work year round, be packable, work dressed up or with casual, and be under $50. Because I don’t wear dresses a lot and don’t want to spend money there. But I saw this as something that would fill a spot in my closet. Anyway, when Angie posted this Maggie London dress I thought maybe, but it was more than what I wanted to spend & then nordies sold out of my size, so I thought it wasn’t meant to be. Then in a random stop in Jjill (leave no stone etc) I found this one on sale. And then this week I thought I’d googled the Maggie London, found my size, at only a smidge higher than my targeted price, on Amazon. So now I’m wondering what you think. Do you prefer one, think one works better with my stated goals? Think neither works? Price difference between the two was only about $10, so that’s not a factor

Both are fabulous on you, can’t go wrong with either one, but if I had to pick just one, I’d be leaning a bit more towards Angie’s pick in outfits # 1-3. I really like the drape of this dress and the navy colour.

I think the ML is more sophisticated and grownup- looking. Also a bit more dressy. It looks great on you. For me I might have side view tummy issues so I often need more camo.
The kind of empire waisted JJILL is more common style. Plus the criss cross bodice may be a little too much. It’s not my fave style compared to more elegant waist BUT since I have trouble getting waistlines to fall in right place it can be a default or a looser fit.
So, how do YOU want to look & feel?

The first one is great on you - the fit is perfect, the hem and slight rushing works showcasing your hourglass shape. The second dress is pretty and fits well but something feels a bit off to my eye ( maybe just personal preference to less fabric in bust area ).

This is going to be a hard one for you, because I bet folks will be divided in their opinions! I prefer the JJill dress draping, but wonder if you need to size down to improve the fit through shoulders and arms? The fabric of the first dress looks more luxurious/deeper coloured in the photos.

I’m feeling the need for a navy shift too, and am stalking RL brands ‘cause Mr. Lauren ‘gets’ my body. I’ve fallen in love with the LKBennet dress (photo) but beyond my price point atm.

They are both pretty in you. I prefer the first one due to where the ruching design hits you. It feels more sophisticated.

Maggy London, hands down. The other one is a lovely bright navy but I don't care for the placement of the ruching on you as much. Great dress and great idea...I could use something like this, too.

Re sizing on the Jjill The Jjill is their smallest missy size, i had tried the petite in store, but felt the length on the missy was better.
I don’t want to say anything else yet, because I’m interested in unbiased opinions.

I think I prefer the first one ... The second one has perhaps a bit more going on for your simple and clean style? But that said I really had to think about it ... They both look really nice!

Both are great cuts too & very flattering.
If I had to choose 1…I couldn’t. The ML looks dressier. The other looks more casual, & more forgiving. Sounds like there could be room for 2 w/ different functions in a wardrobe!
I realize dresses aren’t a frequently worn item for you, but those dresses could change that, lol. The 2nd has a more casual feel which might make it easier to integrate.
So imo, keep both!

You do look wonderful in both dresses. I think it would be harder to make #1 more casual - it is firmly in the dressy camp with the ruching and the fit. You could fancy up the J Jill with accessories, maybe. I love the J Jill Wearever fabric and own two dresses in it - they look good right out of the washing machine and are very packable.

In spite of all the similarities they're fundamentally different, the J Jill is more casual and a less novel design.

I might rather dress down the more elegant Maggie London than try to dress up the J Jill so the ML might be the more versatile.

I’m not sure. You look great in both. At first I thought the JJill, but wondered if that was mainly I liked the colour better? Then I thought perhaps I didn’t like the folded neckline as much and maybe I preferred the ML instead!

Roberta hit on my dilemma, I think the ML dress is fundamentally dressier and it might be harder to dress down. On the other hand, it’s an exceptionally well made dress for the price, and it fits really well.
And while I wish I could keep both, I really don’t wear dresses enough to make keep them both, so that’s not the answer
I think I need to actually try styling both dresses…

I understand your dilemma. While I prefer the Maggy London dress on you, like you say, it might be harder to dress down. The crossover top on the JJill dress looks a little loosey-goosey to me, but it is a nice casual dress, so it might be the right choice for you if you can style it to your liking.

Throw a denim jacket and sneakers on with the ML and Bob's. your uncle.

I think both look great - and I can see what you mean about the second leaning more casual.

I think a dress like this for you will fill that spot for a smart work option or travel or potentially even a funeral. I think trying a couple of stylings to see how it works with coats or footwear Could confirm your decision.

Me too! That, is, I vote for the ML because it looks great on you, fits well, and I suspect there will be lots more occasions to wear a dress like this than you can imagine right now.

I love the style and fit of the Maggy London dress on you and prefer it to the J Jill option. I think you could dress down the Maggy London with a jean jacket and sneakers (and I see that's already been suggested!).

I think the first one fits better, is more conventionally flattering, and looks more luxe. I would sit and make all the moves to make sure it works, but I am nervous anything even slightly body con.

Both are lovely, it depends on whether you are looking for a dressier navy dress or a more casual one. The ML looks beautiful on you and would be the one I personally would choose.
