K/R: Black Tunic

I'm on the fence, can't decide on this EF black tunic. I've been wanting one, but it is a want, not a need.

Pros: Comfy, high quality, love the diagonal hem

Cons: pricey (EF of course, $158), not sure it works as a "column of black" which is basically the only way I have to wear it (not sure the details show), might be too long except for leggings and you know I'm not getting any of those!

Pic 2 is trying to show the vent on the side, one of the details I like that might not show enough to be worth it.

Pic 3 is how I'd likely wear it...with one of very many scarves or with some bold jewelry.

Help me decide...how does it look as I have it now? If I need things I don't have to make it work at all, it should go back.

I love it. It looks as if it drapes beautifully.

It's tough to be 100% sure of proportion without your full height in the photo, but my inclination is to say keep!

Perri I love this! In fact I was looking at it on line last night. I have just bought new winter boots so my budget isn't fluid right now but I am watching this tunic as it's the only thing that fits my tunic brief. I think this looks wonderful on you. How does it feel? The length and fit look perfect. I prefer it without the scarves, tho they do look good. A long pendant would look lovely. I would vote keep:)

Suz...I know, I can't find a place in my house to get a full length picture, can't back up far enough!

Deborah...It feels great, very light and soft. Perfect transition weight...except it turned 85 today yuck! I need my final decision soon to get any wear before summer!

Alaskagirl...my Joie is cobalt, plus this is very lightweight. No competition, Joie cashmere for the coldest days and this for spring and fall. The style similarity is what makes me happy! I guess I just had fewer doubts about the Joie because of the color contrast.

LaCeleste...Thanks! I was a big fan of black in my younger days but there is a definite worry of it looking harsh now at 54. I hope what you see is there IRL!

So Perri, may I ask is the garment worth the money? I don't believe EF is avaialble here (Aus) so I have no experience of EF IRL. I love love love the style but want to be sure its worth it?

I still love the Three Dots tunic you tried and noted it is on sale but due to to your experience I am not confident of the shoulder fit.

I love this on you, and I think it works beautifully just how you have paired it here with the black pants and the scarf. The asymmetrical hem is a beautiful, unexpected touch, and I think it is even better with the column of black than it would be contrasted against another colour. I vote keep.

Deborah, I'm not sure how to answer on worth the money. I have read so much from other bloggers about EF being worth it, holding up to wear and washing with no problems, and it certainly does seem like good quality. I've never been one to buy a lot of cheap things, because numbers wise I lean to the minimal side of things. Especially after a giant purge...I don't want to buy a lot of stuff that I will be tired of in a year. I do wonder if the trendy shape of this one will date it faster, but it is a trend I like.

Anyway, it is all subjective. The Joie tunic was more than that and was actually the most I've ever spent on one thing...and I didn't regret it. It is so hard for me to find things I like. It seems like I shop forever to find anything and return 90% of what I buy, so I have decided to make decisions based on love and usefulness and then just pay what they cost. Up to a point that is...and that point for me is under $200 is acceptable, over $200 will require major soul searching. This is less than that, so doable, I just have to decide how much love and usefulness is there. And of course most things...especially summer things...won't cost that much.

(That's more than you asked for, isn't it?!)

And, about the Three Dots...I am definitely IT. I just measured wearing something that fits well, and across the shoulders, seam to seam, I am 16.5 inches. 42 around! The seams on that one needed about 2 more inches on each shoulder...if your measurements are smaller it could be just right.

Peri, I like it, but really wish I could see it full length. I understand, though the mirror issue. The mirror with the best space behind it is in my bedroom which doesn't have great lighting. What I see looks great, though!

I can't see the vent detailing but I do like the asymmetric hemline and the length! I like the way you have used the scarf- it is such a lovely colour for you and keeps the harshness of the black away from you face! Very clever!

Peri this looks so nice! I like the drapey-ness and I feel that you can't go wrong with black - especially with the way you would style it. I wish I can see a better picture of the length so that I can have an idea what the proportions are like! But it seems like you're comfortable with it!

I think it looks great on you. I am an enabler but if you love it you should keep it. It looks like a basic with something extra, I think you will get a lot of use out of it.

I love it! The drape is lovely and so is the hem. I don't see harsh with the black at all.

Some of my favorite- and most worn- pieces are EF. There are several that I have bought in more than one color because I find them to be comfortable, good quality and versatile. I do have to say no to some of her pieces because the price is just too high but I've never regretted purchasing the ones I have.

Peri, I think it looks terrific on you. I looked at this tunic myself, but in the red. If only it were just a little less orange. I'm still thinking about it, though. I saw someone in the blogosphere style the black one with skinny jeans and booties, and it looked really great that way, too. It would probably work with the right pair of straights.

I have a few EF pieces in my wardrobe, and they are workhorses. They're also super comfortable to wear and make me feel good. I haven't paid full price for all of them, but there are one or two I have, and, for me, they were worth it. But that is totally subjective as you said so well.

Deborah, if the tunic were the exact right shade of red, I would probably pay full price if that helps at all.

Deborah, yes, it was Une Femme that made me want it. She is quite a fan of EF. Some of the more plain T shirt looking tops never thrilled me that much, but I like the shape of this one so it was much more tempting.

Oh, something else for you...Nordstrom has this top in Petite. I didn't order from there because at the time they didn't have regular and I was afraid what Petite would do to the shoulders. But Petite might be great for you.

BethL that is really strange...I wonder why Dillards would have a color that the EF website didn't have. You'd think the official website would have everything they made.

Hi Elizabeth...I have Small in both so they are pretty close. This EF is a little looser in the shoulders and arms than the Joie but otherwise similar. HTH!

I don't know, Peri. I think that sometimes happens. I've sometimes noticed pieces that say "exclusive to so-and-so." Also, the color of the red one is different in real life than the pic at Dillard's shows. There's a local boutique here that carries a small range of EF, and I tried it on there. I think I'm probably going to save my money this time around. I'd get the black one, too, because it really is such a beautiful top, but I have another black EF tunic, and I think the two are too similar to warrant having both.
