K/R and thrifting find (wave bye-bye to the jacket - see last post)

Went for a bit of thrifting with my BFF today and came home with two things - well within my May Madness SYC challenge since I had a 30% off coupon for my local thrift store.

The metallic flats are a keep - no matter what you say! I've been wanting metallic flats but didn't want to spend too much on them since I don't wear flats a ton. I saw these Nicole bronze metallic flats with a tiny wedge heel and some interesting chain detail on the peep toe. They fit perfectly and are oh so comfy! I'm not sure these were ever worn as they had the original price tag still on the bottom of the shoe. I can see these with skirts and my clamdiggers.

The jacket is the keep/return item up for discussion. It's a brand called Population and is a fabulous 1960's mod looking pattern in white, black, red and taupe. It's a very boxy shape with an oversized collar and tea length sleeves. It's also beautifully lined. It is a light weight outdoor jacket but in cold weather here could probably be worn as a blazer. What do you think of the jacket - keep or return?

Oh, TS, I wish I loved this jacket but I find it so overwhelming in the photos. It may be because it is so not my taste, but I feel like I'm looking only at the jacket and you get lost.

Is the jacket you? If it is, it's awesome--definitely one of a kind and definitely eye-catching. It looks to me, from the photos anyway, like it was originally expensive. If it's well made and the fabric is nice, and if it's you, I say keep it. However, if the fabric is cheap or if it's not well-made in the little details, maybe not. It's the kind of statement piece that speaks so loudly that it really has to look as if you're wearing it 100% on purpose and you 100% feel awesome in it. If you wouldn't be confident in it, it might not work.

Lamireille - this jacket is SOOOOO me it's ridiculous! I'm big into the whole retro kind of look and really enjoy "different" items that I know I will not see on anyone else. The colours are ones I wear often and feel good in. This jacket is very well made from the lining to the stitching to the buttons. I think my hesitation is if the pattern is too big and loud for 5 foot me?

Wasn't sure at first with the black pants, but I think it looks GREAT open and over the black dress! For me, personally, I'd go with a daintier shoe, but take that with a grain of salt because that is likely just my own personal bias. Great flats too!

I love them both! You have such great luck with shoes at your consignment store Shannon. They are fabulous and will go with everything this summer! The jacket is 100% YOU and it never occurred to me that the pattern was too large for petite you. I think your big personality can handle it just fine, and I love it over the dress. Score!

Well this is highly unusual for me and maybe a result of my May Madness SYC - but I'm actually thinking of returning the jacket. I totally appreciate the love it's gotten here and personally, it's very much my style BUT...I have several jackets already, this jacket can only be worn with a few items in my closet and really is more for cooler weather (so not the season I'm in/approaching) and what I really need is tops. I need tops to wear with my various skirts and few pairs of trousers, as well as my clams when the weather is warm enough. This is an area I'm a little lacking in - so perhaps my thrifting dollars should go towards blouses instead?

Shannon, fwiw, I really enjoyed seeing the jacket on you, but I see you've decided... so!

I know it's hard; be strong! I'm right there with you among the items we love that instantly call to our style antennae (psst! red loafers!) vs the items we need to be dressed from head to toe in that same style we love!

Now go get those tops lest we find you in a fab skirt and fab jacket with nothing but a cami between, one of these days... That shoe is great, by the way, speaking as newly minted authority on metallic flats (got my very first pair, apart from my old gold sneakers, recently)

Hmm. I was going to shout KEEP until you raised that question. I really love the jacket for you. Not so much with trousers but I adore it with the dress and would with a pencil skirt.

But if it's not really practical and you have other needs, AND you think you can locate the blouses you want at thrift, that might be another matter.

Speaking for myself, blouses and shirts are the one thing it's really impossible to find at the thrift stores here. They arrive in horrid shape for some reason and are too unsavoury to consider.

What does it look like over a column of another color from the mix? I like to wear tanks under jackets in the summer, so the jacket functions as a quasi-top.

Shannon, you are being so brave in the face of temptation! I have been doing a bit of returning and trying again (returned the black tango shoes). Even if I get no money back from the store, I can trade them for something else that might be used a little more in my life. It must be hard for you, since it seems like you can do no wrong with these items! But good job keeping a clear head. It doesn't seem like your source is going to dry up any time soon!

Shannon, the shoes are an obvious keep.

The jacket to me falls in the category of "Thrifted Rescues", i.e., things you adore and want to preserve even though they are not easy to style. There's a thread on here somewhere with a gorgeous orange and purple canvas trench coat I thrifted, similar to this pattern you found. It is very "me", and I even had it altered. But I have yet to wear it once. It's just not an easy piece, and it's outerwear, which to me should be more of a no-brainer, not something to coordinate. I wish I had a museum for such finds.

Anyway, take that for what it's worth. Possibly nothing!

I'm not in love with the jacket - I find the scale of the print to be too big for you (just my opinion). I would happily defer, of course, but since you are also having a hard time styling it, I vote to return. This situation very much reminds me of my recent green dress return - I came to the same conclusion that wearability was just as important as the fit and style. And just think: maybe something even better will be waiting for you later, as was the case when you returned your first pair of white jeans.

Honestly, I am not loving the jacket - I think the print is really overwhelming, I hate to say that because I love a well made vintage item and saving it for posterity but either you keep and then resign yourself to wearing every month or few months in cooler times (but for years) and it keeping a space or you return and keep looking.
If you aren't bugged by keeping a vintage curator closet (and maybe you should do that since you love it) and not worrying about wearing it so many times, etc. then keep it.

I still think you should keep the jacket. It just needs simpler shoes, the Doc Saras fight for attention. Let the jacket be the star.

Now that jacket! You either keep it, or send it to me lol. That is absolutely wonderful. I love it. Perfect over your sheath dress and I wonder how it would look over a straight leg pant rather than a skinny. Please note I have read your comments above but I have no practical bone in my body when it comes to items like this. I adore it and even if you only wear it occasionally I say it's a wonderful piece to have

I'm a fool for metallic flats so those are a no-brainer.

I vote keep on the jacket but I'm also a weakling for great finds whether I use them or not. Anyway, I think the jacket would look awesome in a thousand ways: with a longer pencil skirt in black (mid calf, well below the knee) and funky black boots, with jeans in one of the colors like red with heels, over a longer denim pencil skirt, etc. I guess I think the black skirt is too short for the bold jacket.

I'm not a fan of the fit of the jacket on you even though its meant to be boxy. Its interesting reading this thread- some love it, others not so much. I realize where my own prejudice comes from: I like things 'slim' in overall silhouette even if they are meant to be boxy. I think the length and pattern overwhelms you to my eye. But it all depends on how it plays out in real life and how you feel!! If you are 'feeling'it keep it if not so much return.

In the light of day, I have definitely decided to return the jacket. As much as I love the retro vibe of it, I just don't feel it working well enough to take up space in my closet.
