K/R - Coats (set DH or me straight!)

A coat in my climate is a pretty big purchase. I bought a puffer from Land's End for the warmth not the fashion of it, so I wanted a more fashionable early winter late spring coat. After trying on more than I want to admit, these are the two I am considering.

I "need" a coat in that I am not happy with the one I have. I like the deep green color, but the cut is very unflattering. Still, it is warm and water resistant on these unpredictable fall days. So, I really want to upgrade and save "little green" for weekends with DD.

Pic #1 - Leather jacket. The leather is rich and supple. It feels amazing. It is a scuba jacket warm enough for fall. My concern is that it is leather. And it drizzles here. And DD has been known to grab the hem of my cat and wipe her face on it. Yeah, gross, I know. But that is my lifestyle right now! Not sure if it practical, and not sure about the neckline.

Pic#2 - MICHAEL Michael Kors trench with a really nice detachable liner. The liner makes it warm enough for my climate, especially the outside fabrication that gives it wind and water resistance. It has a detachable hood. It comes in the red shown here and black. The only bad thing is the liner bunches a bit when I put it on and so it must be straightened.

Are either of them keepers?

The leather one! Leather wipes off just fine, and drizzle isn't too bad. Just get a leather conditioner and wipe your coat down once a season or so.

I am partial to the leather for a number of reasons. First, a leather that is sprayed (say, with Wilson's leather protector), will wipe clean far more easily of children's sticky fingers and messes than will any fabric. Second, I like that the dark leather would add a different element to your very feminine look, and it might go very well to transition warm-weather dresses into fall. Last, I like the shorter length on you and think it will be more versatile with both pants and dresses. I vote leather!

Thistle -first I think you look great in both jackets. I have always found my leather jacketsto be pretty indestructible. I have a son who is hard on everything and 3 dogs. Leather will hold up to mild rain and wipes off well. I think the trench is pretty and a lovely color for you but if you are fussing with the lining before you buy it I would worry it will really annoy you after it's yours. I think the most important thing is how do you feel in the jackets? It seems like you feel wonderful in the leather jacket. It looks wonderful on you and if it feels great and you will feel fabulous every time you wear it, I think that should be a strong consideration.

Wow. They are 2 really different coats/jackets, so "comparing" is difficult.
The leather is way more super-cool looking on you. I would like to see it with other bottoms you would typically wear with it. But it is not a rain jacket. Or a snuffle jacket--would you worry constantly?

Not a super fan of that type of collar of the MK trench, but you could adjust the look by unbuttoning. The color is nice and cheery for rainy fall and early winter, but the style is a bit blah--I think you could wear something with a more zingy cut, though I'm fresh out of specific suggestions. But it would be practical and easy to toss on going out the door. The length provides more warmth.

Hi Thistle. The trench looks wonderful on you. I love the colour and the fit looks great. I would say a keeper for sure ! I like the leather too it looks smart but I hear you about lifestyle. Having said that really good quality leather actually wears quite well. I have had one leather jacket almost 20 yrs and it still looks great. I guess another question you might ask yourself is, whether you will wear the leather inside. Is it the right weight for that ?

I think both jackets look lovely on you.

I agree with the others that leather is great for wearing around kiddos. Our daughters are close to the same age. I love leather because baby wipes are perfect to clean anything and everything off of it, especially darker leather. A little weatherproofing spray and you are set for drizzle. After all, leather boots weather drizzle all the time!

The leather is an outdoor coat with a good lining, so no, I couldn't wear it inside.

I love the leather. Don't worry about the wet. I live in Seattle and wear leather all the time.

What happened to that killer stunning burgundy A-line wool coat you had last year?

The burgundy coat still is here, but the weight lifting changed my biceps. I can't wear it with a full sweater under it anymore. it fits fine everywhere but through my upper arms.

Ha, you are all siding with DH! I should've known to listen to him. :). He loves the leather jacket and thinks I should keep it. He says the red one is okay, but keeps telling me how much he likes the leather.

I love the color and versatility of the red coat. A coat with a liner is a godsend especially to transition into those early spring/early winter rainy cold wet days. You'll be happy to be that bright spot in a sea of dark dreary colors. I say stand out and keep the red!

Another vote for the leather. You can always carry an umbrella. Well, actually, I know how complicated that can be with a little kid also in tow, but what the heck. It sounds plausible.

Another vote for leather. The red looks nice on you, but the leather looks better. Less conventional, with a little bit of an edge.

I like the trench, but I'd like it better with a V-neck opening (which may not be weather friendly, but allows for a scarf decoration). The leather though is easier to maintain, stain + snot free for the most part, whereas you would be on stain alert with the red (I still love the color though). Maybe a compromise is a colored leather jacket?

I think Von is on to something. The leather seems very wearable and actually sensible, but I'm projecting MY preferences in wanting to see you in a different color leather

Love the leather for you, Thistle. You can look into whether a breathable water-resistant spray is a good idea. Wear on leather adds character (to a point) and it will be a versatile topper.

The trench, which serves completely different purposes, is also nice on you. My only negatives on it are that, to my eye, the belt, combined with pocket details and small buckles on the sleeves make it bit busy. Take this with a huge grain of salt, as I bat for Team Simplicity to a fault.

I think you can find your perfect trench (and this may be it), but those leather jackets are particularly tricky and this one nails it. Plus, to be honest, I smile at the thought of you in it- so fresh and fun. Finger prints be darned! Just read other posts and there seems to be a happy consensus.

Is it even possible to wear out a leather jacket? My leather jackets last for decades and just seem to get better with age.

Needless to say, my vote is for leather. Much sturdier and more practical, but also a killer look. Listen to your husband on this one.

I adore the leather. I wore a leather coat when my kiddos were young, with no worries!

I do think you could use a lined trench. The fit here is good, and I like that it has both a lining and a hood. I'm not enamored of the neckline however.

Oh, and speaking of water repellent... When my kids were young I wore a leather jacket with patch pockets. Once I was getting out of the car and my sleeve snagged my coffee cup. I didn't realize until I was out walking and went to put a hand in my pocket that I had the better part of a cup of coffee IN the right side pocket. It did not leak; it just stayed there - a cup of coffee literally in my pocket. I had to remove the jacket and turn it upside down to remove the coffee. The leather (a smooth black leather) did not stain or lose its finish in any way. That jacket was a tank.

Anyway, the moral of my very verbose story is that leather can make for great outerwear in the rain.

A flight attendant once drove over my leather jacket with her drinks cart and it survived with the merest of scratches. Leather for so many reasons.
Add a coat with rich colour later.
