Ask Angie: Klingon War Blazer... thoughts?

Y'all know how I feel about strong shoulders, but for some reason this blazer followed me home for a buck. It is by this brand, Omorika, yet I can't find any information on pricing or find them for sale anywhere. Very nice unlined construction out of 100% wool (good for work breathability).

BUT. Those shoulders. It makes me feel vaguely Klingon. And I'm just not sure if the style is me. Just because it is a beautifully made and interesting piece does not mean I should own it.

Thoughts?

OMG Rae. You are KILLING me with these finds. I need to pay you to assemble grab bags of clothing to ship to me.

I love it. I think the tabs on the shoulders make it look intentional and more "natural" than other strong shoulder blazers I have seen. I love how you styled it!

I love it, too!! Super cool and edgy. Love how you are wearing it, too. Yes, I can see the Klingon thing, a little...but it also vaguely echoes the whole kimono look. In a really good way. Love how you have styled it.

Oh-h-h-h, I really love it! But then, I'm a strong shoulder fan. If it were me, I would hold onto it for days I felt I needed to feel/look strong, and then see if I reached for it. If it is not scratchy and/or moth eaten, I would have a hard time letting go if it without giving it a chance.

You say Klingon like it's a bad thing.

I love it and would wear it! I hate bulky 80s shoulder-pad styles but I like a strong architectural shoulder like this. I think it looks fab on you but you need to feel great in it and own the look! How do you feel about it?

Another yes vote from a lover of the strong shoulder. But why don't you like them? They seem to fit really well with the rest of your aesthetic to me - I must be missing something.

Some of the hesitation is that I've been reaching for more classic things lately. And I've just never felt feminine when my shoulder line is wider than my hip line... it's absolutely my most disliked thing about 80s style. I tried to counteract that a bit by wearing my highest heels here... I worry about adding any width at my height because my rectangle shape can easily turn square.

Well, even though you have just voiced those doubts, I still think you look great in it. it fits your UWP well and you have added the feminine touches with the skirt and heel.

It's really an interesting piece and looks great on you. I'm not totally sure of the shoes with it - I feel like the two together might be enforcing the Klingon vibe, but that's just my first thought. What I mean is the way the booties sort of wing out too, mimicking the shoulders.

I am totally the wrong person to ask 'cause I love a strong shoulder. I think this jacket is AMAZING and looks fantastic on you. And like Suz, I see a wee bit of kimono influence in the jacket.

Just because you are reaching for more classic shapes and lines these days doesn't mean you closet can't have room for a few edgier and interesting pieces, does it?

Bottom line though Rae is you need to love it.

it is super cool but belonging to the IT/apple mix which of course is not your body type I feel strongly about strong shoulders. You have gotten a lot of love for it and I suspect Angie will find it killer too HOWEVER the utmost question: would you wear it? how does it make you feel?

Ok, that last picture for comparison just cracked me up. And yes, I can see the resemblance. But the jacket is all kinds of fabulous and does really look good on you.

You say you got this for a single dollar?!!! Can you tell me exactly where you shop? My Goodwill doesn't have anything under $10 I swear.

I think the styling is important. With the boots it reads more costume-y to me. I might have to follow a formula and try it with more refined ladylike footwear and jewelry--even a more flippy skirt--also maybe colors--to play against type and less bride of Lt. Worf.

I love it, and it's exactly the kind of quirky unique item I would pick up at a thrift store and hoard in my closet, longing for a reason to wear it. On the cautionary side, I just purged several such items, including a very Mad-Max-like skirt that had slashed hems and D-rings and pockets galore, because they were SUCH fantasy items - I never did wear them, but held on to them for years just because I loved to collect them and couldn't bear to part with them once I owned them. Now I know better than to take them home.

You have a way of bringing these items down to reality and using them; if you can see yourself doing it with this jacket, then KEEP.
