Keep or Return: Anthro denim skirt?

I've never owned a denim skirt and have not much luck styling the few I do have. I tried it with different tops but skirts are hard for us short waisted women. Should I keep it or return it?

I really like it! 3 doesn't work for me untucked because of the hemline, but I like both tucked and untucked versions in the other photos.

I know what you mean about the short-waisted thing. This is why I own zero skirts. I vote return, and get a denim dress.

I like it and prefer tucked because it shows the nice pintucks at the waist, and because I think the proportions are better untucked with square, somewhat short tops, rather than longish ones.

It's a nice skirt. I prefer the shirt tucked, or a different slim fit shirt, to offset the volume of the skirt.

Xtabay: Yes, I only ordered it because one reviewer said it was a style that worked for short waists. I will try to find a denim dress.

rabbit: That is exactly my take. It is cute because of the tucks but doesn't work on my body and to work untucked, it needs shorter tops which are hard to find because of my short waist.

JAileen: Yes, you are right, it looks very fundamentalist so it would give the wrong message about me.

I liked it untucked better, and liked #1 the best. However, the biggest question is --- are you loving it? Perhaps you should return it if you are not feeling it.

Donna: It is a very nice skirt but I'm not sure I can make it work for me. I did try it with a different shirt to check the proportions. Is this better?

mica: I'm not loving the way it looks on me. Maybe I'll keep it to wear around the house on hot days. (We have lots of them where I live.)

Bonnie: If you're not loving how it looks on you, I'd encourage you to return if you can and get something that makes your heart sing! You are gorgeous and there are so many options out there right now for hot weather, and I'm sure even more will emerge in the next couple months.

Denim skirts are tricky to pull off. This one is very nice with its little pleats and details and I won't lie and say it doesn't suit you. It suits you.

But... a very nice denim skirt is still a denim skirt, and denim skirts are tricky to pull off. If you don't like it, don't keep it.

Bonnie G, the skirt is very nice and to my mind wear it with the shirt tucked, last picture with stripes for example or shirt, but I think to change shoes, may be ballet if you wear flat shoes, not shoes with a belt, it make leg shorter.

Bonnie, I have seen you wear such interesting and great looks, and I think you can do a lot better. I do share J'Aileen's thoughts on how denim skirts like this can skew very religious/fundamentalist - at least in my part of the country they do. There are funkier versions available that might give you the ease and degree of casualness you are looking for while looking a little more modern.

That said, this style would work better I think with a different shoe and definitely a tuck-ed in or waist-defining top. A wedge heel, or a really interesting espadrille along with a bolder top could take it into more of a California boho look, which is always cute.

I agree with JAileen; skirts like this always bring to mind fundamentalists for me. As approprio said, denim skirts are tricky to pull off. Denim dresses, on the other hand, I find much more flattering for many more people.

I am not feeling it -- partly because of those darts. They need to lie flatter and I don't think they help any of us placed at that particular section of the skirt.

I used to love my denim skirts and am looking for an updated one. May go the pencil denim skirt this time, if I can find one that is soft and light as our summers are hot.

I wonder if this skirt would wrinkle a lot?

Well, I really like this skirt. I wear similar skirts in summer all the time. I'm also short waisted. and really it's a bit trick to find the right top with it. For me, untucked, shorter- little below the waist- and fit (but not too much) tops work well... It's not easy to find them. And maybe, try it with different shoes?

approprio: I looked on Pinterest and saw very few denim skirt looks I liked, especially this length. I can see why I have stayed away from this style skirt. It fits, it's cute, but it's hard to style.

Mirjana: Thank you. I agree - no belts for me. I don't have ballet flat style shoes but I do have some espadrilles with a bit of a heel I could try.

Diane G: I'm not much of a tucker because I have to fuss too much to keep it tucked in but I agree it looks better. The skirt length is odd on me.

lisap: Oh, I like the idea of California Boho. I will look on Pinterest and see if I can find something that inspires me. I have wedge espadrilles and will try them. Great ideas!

Echo: I am going to be looking for a denim dress and I think that will be easier for me to style. Thank you.

CJ: The skirt seems to be really well constructed and is a medium weight denim so I don't think it will wrinkle. It should work really well with certain body types - unfortunately, not mine.

This one is similar- for me, the lenght of the top has to be just right, as at this photo, a little below the waist, and it should not be boxy but a bit tailored. I hope this helps. Sometimes I can find such tops at petite sections, or simply have them shortened.

Another short waisted person here. That length skirt is hard to pull off, I feel, especially in denim. There are a lot of cute denim skirts around. Maybe hang on to it and keep looking?

Actually I think I like it best with the striped top. I think that's because the pattern runs sideways and the eye goes with it. I really like the darts in the hip area so it's a shame to cover them up...But in the end it is all up to you and if you like wearing it. A tunic/untucked top sort of obscures the nice details of the upper part of the skirt.

Do you have a top that would, untucked, drop down only 2-3 inches below your natural waistline? Or even a little shorter, but still covering the waistband? The bottom of this shorter top should hang away from your body, not cling or drape. Maybe you could try this out for proportion only, even if the color or pattern does not work well with the skirt. Just a thought.

ETA: I didn't read anyone else's commentary before I write mine...I think Adela and I came up with the same idea!

I tried that skirt on at Anthro and the other one that Angie posted awhile ago. No luck for me. I felt like a fundie as LisaP pointed out. It has that vibe.
Did you try the other denim skirt on? The one that Angie suggested? I posted it below. I liked it but it was too short on me. I am 5'7.5". True to size. The reviews say it is not but I was fine in my regular size.
The denim is very thick. Not the best for a hot summer.

I like the skirt but see the problems. I don't love the length either, but if shortened it might throw the proportions of the skirt off.

Agreed that denim skirts are difficult to find.

It's a cute skirt and I like the shape and the pin tucks. Tucked tops are better. Like LisaP, I would like to see it with different shoes and some jewellery. I have this one in the photo. I like it, but I won't lie, I do find it a bit tricky to wear. It definitely needs a tucked top or a shorter top (hip length or above). The top I am wearing in the photo is a high low top. I think these skirts are less tricky to wear when the hem is shorter (above knee). It changes the proportions somehow. You could also think about whether shortening the skirt would improve it, if you really feel motivated to keep it.

I definitely prefer it with the shirts tucked, and I like the striped shirt best with it. The plaid shirt is my second choice. The other tucked shirt looks too conventional, to me, for your style. I also think different shoes will help make the look more arty/boho/hip. Something like a platform sandal or bootie--I'm posting a couple of my Finds below as quick examples. Finally, I think a shorter length would be better--I wonder if the skirt would still look good with 2 to 3 inches taken off the hem (and if you would still wear it at that length)?
And I think the skirt StyleFan suggests has potential to work better for you, because of the tapered shape (closer fit at the top) and shorter length.
It's such a revelation to hear you say you're short waisted and that you find it problematic with skirts. I have said many times here on YLF that skirts are my nemesis, because I find the proportions soooo tricky to get right on my body. I am short-waisted, too; aha! there's at least part of the answer, huh?
