So today I came home with a Guess denim skirt. I needed a denim skirt, and this one appeared to me as quirky and cool, full of potential with its hi-lo structure and frayed edging. It's just weird enough... or is it too much? My son (my devoted photographer... I'm lucky I know!!!) seems to think it is indeed "weird" ("Now that you are mentioning it Mom, I wasn't going to say, but... yes I admit the back is bizarre"). But I am not one to listen to a 19 yr old gamer immersed in a narrow-sighted Land's End and Old Navy globe-trotter preppy-ism. Mind you, I love my son. Despite his conservative views. And I must admit I'm totally guilty, since I am the one who raised him in khakis and polo shirts in the first place.

Below are some pics, the fruit of our very fun photo-shoot session during which DS proceeded to explain to me the political and cultural place of Syria and Libya in the world, while I tried to convince him to remove his style blinders a little and accept that sometimes "weird" can be also adequate. But, he might be right. I might very well be a fashion victim here. What do you think? (Anyway at least the skirt is not expensive, but the topic of conversation made me feel guilty for being so frivolous in such dire times, especially at my age. So I poured myself another glass of wine).

I am not decided on the skirt. Should I keep or return it? And which outfit do you prefer?

1-3: With red MizMooz maryjanes and a top knitted by me (tweed jacket sewn by my grand-mother back in the 70's!).
4-6: Same but with my very funky Fluevog maryjanes. Too clown-like?
7: different look with clogs, medallion belt and 1970's leather jacket (bought in a Victoria, B.C. thrift shop in the company of beautiful Ephemera blogger!).
8-9: With a Talbots denim shirt. This shirt is such a let down. It fits, the material feels like a dream, just the perfect weight and dark shade... but its dye bleeds onto anything I wear with it: nude bras, camis, toppers... even after I washed it a couple of times. Luckily I can remove the stains, but it's a drag.
10-12: With Angie's recommended Sam Edelman's ankle strap Okala and a Jessica Simpson blouse.
13: With a Marciano shirt.

Some 19 year old may not want to accept that his mom looks very sexy in a denim skirt. Keep if you can take the attention you will get wearing it.

THIS!!! Heck, yeah, *this* is my kind of denim skirt. It's flat-out amazing and, even better, it was made for you. Look 8 is gorgeous, though this unique skirt is truly fab in every way you've styled it. I also love it with the striped sweater in the first photos. Can I gush enough about this skirt? Probably not, so I may pop back later to gush some more.

No no, not too much! I love this on you. I think the bag flap thing is pretty cool! It seems to work with a lot of your clothes.
I really love your sweater in #1, btw. I think the outfits featuring this sweater are the best, although I like the jessica simpson blouse outfit too. Actually, they're all good.

Like Joy, my first thought was what a great figure you have! I really like the tall boots and down vest outfit.

This skirt is amazing on you. I think you own its unique style, in each of these outfits. I like the classic pencil shape, roughed up in a jeans skirt, and given a bit of quirky edge with the lower back hem. Looks great with all the footwear and tops you've shown. My personal fave is #10--like an office pencil skirt look gone wild. So cool!

Fantastic! I quite like the skirt....it's not to weird....just 'interesting' enough to stand out #8,10 &13 are my favourites.

And you don't look like you could have a 19yr old son!!! You're looking fantastic in EVERY click!

It's rare for me to find a good denim skirt that won't bulge at the front of the waist.

shevia I really dig the Okalas' look with it too. They create a nice contrast. Those shoes are surprisingly comfortable. I wore them to school the other day and my feet did not hurt one bit.

CocoLion, thank you, that is very kind. I admit I look more relaxed than in the past, and that's probably because 1) I have been working at a job I absolutely adore, even though it pays very little (teacher) 2) I have also picked up Charleston and Electro-Swing and do it as my workouts, although I thought this much intense cardio must not be a good thing for the face... apparently not... 3) my son is back living with me. All in all, I'm on the whole happier. It seems silly to say like this, but it was not easy to leave my unhappiness behind. I guess it paid off. I cross my fingers it remains that way lol.

This skirt looks absolutely amazing on you! It's not weird, but it is unusual--in a good way.

"Wow " is all I can say. This is the only kind of denim skirt I'd wear so I say go for it. It is pretty sexy looking in some of the photos, which may be the reason for your son's remarks, but with the Okalas, it reads as classy and cool all at once. As much as the Fluevogs and Miz Moos are interesting shoes, the Okalas dial down the vavavoom factor a tad, which makes it look so good on you. Very cool skirt.

Well dang, now you've gone and ruined me for my boring old denim skirt -- and maybe even the new one I found by chance last night (I'll post separately on that). This is a great trendy skirt! And so flattering. Please keep. If I looked half as good as you in a skirt like that, I'd wear it all the time.

Wow! This is AMAZING. I love every single outfit. Very narrowly, I think the denim shirt may be my favorite, but it's really hard to pick.

I'm sorry to hear that the shirt is still crocking even after several washes. Have you tried "setting" the dye? This article is specifically for indigo. I've used something similar for red wool flannel, which another color and fiber notorious for crocking.

You have the amazing figure to pull off nearly anything you want to wear. I think outfits 10 and 13 look best since the blouses and shoes balance the trendiness of the skirt. Photo 3/5 gave me some pause. Everyone seems to agree you're going to get a lot of attention wearing this. Do you want the attention that it will attract?

lisap, what a good observation. Like what someone else's point of view can be beneficial: I would have thought the maryjanes dialed down the outfits, but now I see how the Okalas do a better job for this.

approprio, what do you mean? The Fluevogs I have on my feet there are from 2014. Is it to say new versions have gone down?

Texstyle, thank you for sharing your impression, it is most useful. I didn't realize this particular outfit - with the Fluevogs - was more attention-grabber than the others, but I guess that there are lots of unusual elements - color, cut, and then those outrageous shoes. I love them, but it's true that they are better paired with something very tame.

I've learned to never, ever, listen to teenage boys (or smaller kids) about my outfits. They seem to be very risk-averse and will always recommend the most blending-in type of outfit for you.

...at least, the teens/kids *I* know.

I wouldn't really mug anyone, not even for a pair of Fluevogs.

I was referring to your splendid son in his Old Navy. My nephew is charming but never seen in anything but jeans and printed tees. And I can remember when his dad used to wear eyeliner.

Yes, the younger generation are a huge disappointment. Don't they have anything to rebel against? Back in the day we had punk rock and the Blitz Club. These days white sneakers are a fashion statement.
