Jean Jacket Conundrum

Angie says they're a staple and I feel like the right one may be very flexible vs my other less versatile jackets, but there are so many choices. What are you ladies thinking in the subject these days? I feel like cropped won't work on a wide shouldered busty gal like me. Then there's the color and wash...here are some Finds and pics of a couple I've tried. I'm seriously overwhelmed at this point!

I wore a slightly oversized denim jacket similar to the first one a lot this winter. But for summer, I think the lighter shade would be perfect. On the other hand, the fit of the darker one here looks better. But you are wearing with dark clothes so it is hard to tell. I am nothing if not helpful :-0!

I think both colors and washes work on you with a slight preference for the second because of the interesting silvery color and inner cuffs.

Here's the thing about jean jackets that I have a little difficulty styling for myself ---they are intensely casual and traditionally shaped. I have trouble with any cross-over between jean jacket and business wear. I can see them crossing a bit with sporty lux, or with dresses/date night outfits, but getting them to cross with avant garde shapes in heavier fabrics (unless they are denim motos or something) just is a little hard for me to do. That's where I I'm not as sure with your style, can you envision or test out wearing these with outfits? And in the test outfit, is there another jacket you already own which works better? Or does the jean jacket really add something?

I've gone through lots of denim jackets but they never feel right to me - maybe overworn in high school? Wash, length, fit - something always was off and felt frumpy on me. I have a denim moto jacket that fills the same purpose. So think about what aspects appeal and which don't. I like these but I think we are similar body types and I find this fit hard to style.

Rabbit and Una, I think you're both in my head! So many of my jackets are moto, I was trying to steer (hard) towards another style, but these look somewhat pedestrian to my eye, on me. I feel like I buy lots of statement pieces and not enough basics, but maybe that's me trying to color within the lines for a change. I think these both need my 80's pins to feel right, lol!

To be honest I don't really see this as your style. More pedestrian as you say. But then again sometimes it's good to try things outside of our norm so I didn't want to discourage per se. Interested to see what you decide.

As I look at the stock photos I think I might just not like classic denim jackets... even the models look kind of frumpy to me. Or maybe it's a more wholesome look than I can wear. Off to check Pinterest.

Dashielle, do you really want one?? I played with denim jackets early on but I realised that I actually don't like them:( They look great on others but I never felt like myself in one. If you do love them, then my only recommendation is for a dark wash as I think that is most flattering on you.

I don't see a jeans jacket as really your style. . .or even Una's style. Nordstrom has an EF white linen one cut in a jeans jacket style but it's pre-order.

I have the same struggles with denim jackets - except for my oversized one - which I love!

I agree, that style does not seem you. I find the collar style skews frumpy on me even though my long neck likes some collar.
You might think " denim" more than Jean jacket and find mixed media or something more unusual.
I think it's fascinating that you posted , and these just clearly don't seem" you" compared to your other great outfits, which means you have really identified a strong signature style and super flattering fits.

adding I have one denim jackets and it is not cut like a denim jacket - it is a workhorse - similar in finds. Works for me like a denim jacket but is more in tune with my aesthetic.
I agree with others based on your wiw's I don't really see a classic denim jacket being your thing.

The "Savannah" in your finds does look more interesting than others, not sure where it would fit in your wardrobe though. Does it exist in darker wash?
I find denim jackets hard to style for all the reasons already mentioned - they are too casual, boxy, and I also tend to wear jeans most of the time - denim on denim is definitely too much for me.
Having said that, I'm waiting for this tencel blazer to be shipped - planning on wearing it with lighter bottoms in the summer.

I really like a denim jacket and it is a staple in my wardrobe. I had a more cropped, closer fitting one for a couple of years and have purged that to instead have a slightly looser and longer fitting version. I find them to be very versatile.

I like the fit and wash of the first one very much on you. I think the boxier fit looks great (love it with the outfit you're wearing too). I'm not crazy about the second one - the lighter wash paired with the boxier fit isn't all that pleasing to my eye.

I have no luck with jean jackets. They never seem to look modern (enough) on me. And I always feel top heavy as I am short waisted/large breasted.

I understand what you're saying. I find denim jackets useful, but I really end up wearing them most for travelling (good for throwing on when it's chilly, don't show dirt, etc.). Even though they may not be my most versatile ones, my favorite ones are by Paige -- one is blue denim with black waxed sleeves, and the other is grey with black leather elbows. Something about the mixed media makes them a little more *me* even if mixed media isn't trending so hard anymore (I wore it and liked it before it was trendy ;-). My classic white denim and faded blue denim jackets are good throw-on toppers for warm weather, but I don't necessarily find them to be great outfit completers -- for that, I gravitate to moto styles, leather, etc.

I like the second one you're wearing in your photos. I think details or color that nudge a denim jacket out of the more "classic" territory could make it a useful item for you, but you have so many other fab jackets that it's hard to say this is a must-have for you.

I recommend trying out the style with an inexpensive brand. I was also considering a denim jacket a year ago, but I wasn't sure it would work for me. So to try out the style, I bought one for under $20 from Old Navy. I had to wash it about eight times before it felt comfortable to wear. I find that I grab it on cool mornings but then later take it off in the office. I don't regret buying it, and the CPW is quite good, but I'm also happy that I didn't spend big bucks on it.

I think if you found the "right" one you'd know it. Both of these are okay but not necessarily great. I think I'd keep looking. I have one that I like enough but I don't love. I bought it years ago and wear it a few times a year. It is a dark wash. I am pretty classic in my dressing but for some reason it still doesn't feel like "me".

ETA: I should have added that maybe something other than jean jacket but still that weight would be better?

Not sure I can add to this conversation, as you've got some great feedback. But I feel as if I'm in the same boat as you... I "should" have one. I had a Gap one a while ago that I never wore, but I put it down to the colour/wash of the denim, because I did like the way it felt on me. I replaced it with a more jackety style, but I'm not crazy about the fit and it will be purged. Last week I picked up another Gap one, in a different wash. This thread has me wondering if it'll sit in my closet again... given how much I like your style, and that we are both broad shouldered busty types. I think I'll see if I can get similar feedback on it for me!

I can so relate to your struggles...I looked for eons and almost gave up on jean jackets until someone posted one on here (I forget who) from H&M ...it was somewhat short and fitted but that's what made it work..I am extremely broad shouldered and every other jacket made me look like a huge football player!

I felt like I needed a denim jacket forever and had purchased quite a few that I hardly ever wore. I think I purged them all after buying the AT one with the black pleather sleeves. It's stretchy so it's comfortable. That was the one thing that I couldn't get over with the others--how stiff and unforgiving they were. (Impossible for me to layer under.) I also wear mostly denim bottoms so they were hard to wear with anything but a dress/skirt but YMMV. I think the jackets you are wearing look nice but they don't scream "Dashielle" to me. I think they look kind of plain compared to your usual style. Just my 2 cents.

I have an oversized white denim that I wear a lot...It is always on spot...I like the clean lines and the polished look..yup polished with a denim jacket...As Marley said, when you find the right one, you will know it...I guess I found Ms. Right...best...

I've never been able to find one either. I just don't like how stiff they are and I always feel uncomfortable in them. Plus, they're so casual and I already wear jeans on casual days and as others have said, I don't like the denim on denim look. If you find one that works for you, that's great, but don't feel like you have to have one. There may be something out there that works better for you.

Interesting responses! It sounds as if it may be a combination of body type and style...

I have three of them and love them. One's a cropped, faded, distressed (so super soft) version that is great to casualize a dress or dressier trousers. One's white. I wear both of these exclusively in spring/ summer.

The other is mixed media with leather sleeves; it's a bit darker and longer. I wear it exclusively in F/W, again, to "dress down" dresses and skirts, as a rule.

But I'm the opposite body type -- small busted (bust? what bust??) with square but not broad shoulders.
