J. Crew Denim Pencil Skirt Questions

Hi Everyone!

I'm thinking of getting this skirt:

I think some of you have it, and I was wondering--does the ink from the denim rub off on things? I have some J. Crew clamdiggers, and I get blue smudges on everything when I wear them (I'm going to replace them this year even though they're not worn out). This pencil skirt is just the style I'm looking for (very plain), but I'll take a pass if it rubs.

Super cute!! I wish I could rock a high waisted pencil skirt like that! Unfortunately being pear shaped the style doesn't flatter me. I look forward to seeing some successfull outfits on you though!

I'm also considering this skirt. I'll add my own question--for those of you who own the skirt, how would you rank it in terms of comfort? I'm looking for an "everyday" pencil skirt that will be fairly comfortable for sitting at a desk in, but that can also be dressed up. That's why the style of this skirt appeals to me--simple, sleek, and dark.

I ordered this skirt before Christmas, had it altered, and just started wearing it. I actually wore it to work today with a striped sweater. Here are a couple of pix so you can see what it looks like on a real person. It's very stretchy, so that makes it comfortable. I had to have mine taken in, but I think I probably because I did not realize I had changed sizes. I made it on the snug size, mainly because of the stretch factor. The bottom line after all my rambling is that I recommend this skirt. Comfy, versatile, and on sale! Post pictures, please.

Thank you Kyle! I thought I remembered that someone on here had it and it looked great, which is why I am interested. I'm so happy there are no smudges--I'll definitely be ordering this skirt to replace the one I have now.

Ana, slightly off-topic, but do you have any preliminary ideas on where you're going to look when you go to replace your JCrew clamdiggers?

I am going to be in the market for a pair or two this spring, and JCrew is not the best fit for me in denim, so I'm just wondering where else I might look.

Laura, I was actually planning on buying another pair of the COH Elsons, and then just having them altered into clamdiggers. Those jeans are wonderful and absolutely perfect for me in every way. And, as much as I wore my J. Crew clamdiggers last summer (and got blue stuff all over everything), investing in another pair or two of COHs is definitely worth it.

Oooh, good suggestions. Ana, I don't know if I could bear cutting off six or more inches of premium denim But if the outcome if perfect, then I guess, why not?

Ana -- I have the JCrew denim skirt and wore it a lot in the fall. I have never had it smudge the blue dye. I can't remember now if I soaked it in vinegar before I wore it.

That's a great skirt. Does it run true to size? I just looked and saw that they are out of size 8 online - which is typically the best fit for me. Occasionally a size 6 skirt fits me, and since Kyle said it's very stretchy I wondered if that might work out. Since all sales are final I'm reluctant to order it, but am not sure I'll get a chance to shop at a store. Any thoughts??

Hmm....I usually take a 6 in J. Crew skirts, so that is what I was going to order. I haven't ever tried it on, so I can't say for sure whether it would work or not. I looked at the photos of the skirt though, and there are back darts that run all the way through the band, so getting it altered probably wouldn't be that hard (I don't think it's lined either). I know you said you have a good tailor that is inexpensive. Maybe you could go for a 10 and just have it fixed?

Hmmmm... a 10 will definitely be too big overall, and I don't like the idea of buying something that is guaranteed to be wrongly sized. I guess I'll call the J Crew stores in the area to see if anyone has an 8 (or a 6) and then I'll go in person. Thanks Ana.

If a 10 would be too big, maybe a 6 would fit you then, Antje? Especially if it's very very stretchy. I think trying it on in person first is a good way to go. Then you know for sure.

I ordered it! I went for a 10 because that's what's supposed to fit a 31-inch waist. Fingers crossed. If it works it crosses off the last item on my list of basics that I need. Also, it's an extra 20% off today with the code EXTRA20.

And I called our J Crew and asked them to hold a size 8 one for me so I can try it on tonite. They said they have plenty in the store as they just got them two days ago. I have to say, I don't understand retail right now. How come it's heavily discounted already when stores just got it in? Weird times...

Angie - would that skirt possibly work for a pear? I've seen it online and in the store but I have not tried it on. I'm desperately looking for a denim skirt and I love the way this one looks.

Antje: The 8 was quite big on me, so I am certain it will be too big on you. J Crew's online no return policy is so inconvenient, isn't it? I was sure an 8 would be right, and then had to pay to have it taken in. I suppose the lesson is to do as Ana suggests and try it on in the store if you can. Fingers crossed!

Antje, it was actually in our store earlier in the year but then went on sale and now it's gone. It's possible that they are shifting stock to the store nearest you (they do this sometimes), because it sold really well there. If it's not on sale for some reason, they will price match to online prices (just FYI). I'm glad you got a chance to try it on. Now I'm wondering if the 6 will be too big for me? But if it is, I don't mind having it taken in. I'm pretty sure I'll need to have it hemmed anyway.

Indeed! I just came back from BelSquare, and I bought the skirt. Size 8 fit perfectly (size 6 would have been a tight squeeze.) It's too long, but that's easy to alter.
JuliJuli, in case you go: At the store, the skirt actually sells for $98. But when I mentioned that it's on sale online (and they looked it up to verify) they honored the sales price of $49.99 and also gave me the extra 20% off that is advertised online. So in the end it was just $39, but it's a final sale.
It's a great skirt, very streamlined and classy, it'll work with everything.
2 skirts in one night, I'm a happy camper (See my post in the Express thread...)

I got my skirt today and it is wonderful! It fits perfectly (other than being about 6" too long). I'm going to pin it and take some photos to decide how short I should get it hemmed. I might post them here for feedback if it's not apparent when I see the pictures.
