I never say to never to anything but i must say i am surprised how many of you dislike cold shoulder tops. I love them and would have them on everything if i could lol.

Sterling - hems 2 to 4 inches above the ankle ARE cropped pants.

Diana, I would have put money on it.

*laughing and nodding in agreement at Suz's "sugar and buttercream"*

As Suz said, adjusting and wearing are two different things. On a rare occasion (like my boyfriend jeans episode a few years back!), I'll actually merge the two, but, mostly, I'm content to just enjoy the sidelines if my instincts say "nope, not for me!" After all, isn't that what personal style is all about--be open about looking, but listening to yourself when it comes to what makes you happiest.

Can I also say how bothered I get when anyone who is happy in her choices--be it a trend, gear, price point, or whatever--feels pressured to set aside her innate preferences in order to be considered "open" to fashion. My "eye" resides in my head and it's a very personal eye which keeps me hopeful as I trudge past the racks of cold-shouldered tops, ruffles, flowery prints, delicate shoes, bows, and chiffon to find those pieces which make MY heart sing. I NEED it to keep me focused on how I like to be seen by others, and, even more importantly, how I like to feel and behave in my clothes.

I was 100% against cold shoulders also, but then I saw a couple that I did like--they have a particularly straight and structured cutout. This is how I ended up with the same cold shoulder sweater that Angie has. (PS, If you remember that she had to wait a while for her size to come back in, it wasn't because of me...mine's a size up from that. Just sayin'! ) It also happens to look really Mod on, and I love Mod... I have one other CS top with the same factor--but I don't plan to add any more.

On the other end of the CS spectrum, I am very averse to the type that has a droopy line to the openings. There is range of these, with some being a lot more unflattering than others.

Ruffles are a similar thing--some I quite like, others I'd never ever wear. It really depends on the size, arrangement, and so on.

Bell sleeves are a yes for me. No shorter than 3/4 length sleeves for those however.

As for some big trends I won't do, these include off-the-shoulder for the impractical and busty reasons others have noted, rompers, overalls/dungarees, slip dresses, most wide-leg pants, the white sneaker thing...and for the love of Pete, those terrible, awful slide shoes that look like bedroom or shower slippers--especially the furry ones. Open toe or not. I don't care how expensive they are!

I should probably add mules as well, because although I don't mind the looks of many of them, I remember the noisiness of past pairs and don't want to deal with that again.

Oh, thought of another. Bomber jackets. Not a good cut for this busty, petite hourglass. And I am never going to be in love with white jeans.

I love cold-shouldered tops! I like ruffled tops on others but probably will never wear them. Ruffles bug me unless they lay perfectly, which isn't the point of ruffles. I don't like the high-waisted "mom" jeans. Not the high-waisted jeans that are sort of retro-70's - those are fine. These are looser through the hip and I just can't get used to them. They look unflattering on everyone I've seen them on - supermodels included.

YLF has taught me that my eye will eventually adjust, so I've stopped saying never, and there are many looks I enjoy on others but know or doubt that I will ever them myself.

The biggest: Off the shoulder and strapless looks. My girls are too full and low to wear a strapless bra, and I know I would look super dumpy. On 23 year old DD for a fun look? I have no problem with that.

Rompers? I am 64 years old. 'Nuff said. But on DD? See above.

I have one cold shoulder T, but I think my shoulders are too rounded for the look, and I'm warming to some ruffles but a lot are done poorly as is just slapped on.

I get more frustrated when a look becomes too saturated at retail - ripped jeans being one of them.

I love rompers but can't see myself wearing one. I also feel similarly about off the shoulder. But if I was a different person I would be all over them both.

There are looks I have never liked and would be surprised to see myself liking one day:

- platform stilettos (expecially in shiny nude)
- cut off denim with the pockets poking out from under the leg

I also like some things that I know others are not so keen on and will continue to like them - casual maxi dresses, leggings worn as pants (with some caveats as to quality), cropped and wide legged pants (not that I own any but I like them), jumpsuits and some ruffles.

I also want to add that I LOVE seeing people wear items that I would not wear myself. Those are some of my favourite WIW when I see someone with a completely different look to me rocking their style.

Y' know, I never give much thought to what I DON'T like, as opposed to what I DO like. When I shop and try things on, my eye quickly focuses on items that suit my taste and body-type - though not always my budget!
There always seems to be more than enough inventory of things that meet my personal criteria. If I didn't have y'all to keep me informed, I probably wouldn't even know whether ruffles and cold shoulders were "in" or out.
I would like to think this means I have a "timeless style". But, tbh, I think it is simply a function of being boring and kind of stuck in my ways!

I'd like to edit my thoughts and comment to be in line with the original question posted: Sure, my eyes adjust to everything, and the life-long fashion student in me appreciates the references in looks that I might not wear myself. I am nodding along with Gaylene's comments about not wanting to feel pressured to be more open to some new look or another. I feel my eye is reasonably well honed, as do most of us here feel I'm sure. There are lots of things I have no interest in wearing myself but like on others; but, there are also many things I simply and honestly do not find flattering or organic to the wearer. But I know I'm often an outlier here with my opinions , and I'm ok with that

Sally - I'm going to pull out my nude patent platform shoes (with a peep toe) AND wear them with cut off denim shorts - really short ones.

LisaP, you go girl......... Maybe you can be the one to convince me..

Here is some inspo for you..

You are all good sports.

Sally :

Nice - smokin'. The higher the heel, the closer to God.

The ruffled tops these days look a lot to me like the paper frills on roasted legs of meat.

I never liked scrunched skinny jeans.

UmmLila -- that image is going to haunt me forever!!!!

Also, Smittie -- me too!!!!! I so prefer them sleek.

Cold shoulder tops. Or as my neighbor calls them, broken shoulder tops.

I cannot adjust to straight leg or wide leg cropped pants. Skinny leg crops I am okay with. And cold shoulder tops aren't for me. I either want to be sleeveless or have sleeves, and the in-between just doesn't work for me. Plus, despite them showing nothing of consequence, they strike me as trying-to-be-sexy. That's a look I'm not after for myself.

As for off the shoulder tops, I don't wear them simply because they make me feel like my clothes are falling off, but I have seen others wear them with coordinating or contrasting tank tops underneath (to allow for wearing a bra) and look phenomenal. It is something I never would have thought to do, nor would I have thought it would look good unless I had seen it, but I have really liked it on those I've seen wearing it.

It took me about 8 years, but I have finally embraced maxi dresses. But my initial dislike of them was due to them always being too long for me, not an inherent dislike of the style.

Things I'll probably never wear again: Ruffles. Cold shoulder tops. Off the shoulder tops. Halter tops. Skirts shorter than ankle length. Peplums. Bell sleeves. rompers and jumpsuits.

And Suz, I died (laughing) at your description of all these "new takes on shirting" because it's just so accurate!

I will say.... mules.
Even " fab" styles and on other people who theoretically could make them look good, I always think, where's the rest of your shoe? They look unbalanced. I think just about any other shoe style looks better on the foot.

Echo: yes, the off the shoulder tops don't feel secure! They have a look about them that says, "pull me down!"

I hope I never wear shape wear again - I positively detest it. Friends tell me of some new brand and I try it once and feel horrible in it. I just do not like the feel of very tight and constricting garments. So whilst I love body con looks (on others) - if anything requires shape wear, then it is not for me.

I enjoy looking at all fashion. But I will never wear (and I can say this with confidence because I am almost 62) girly type clothes. Ruffled shirts, cold shoulder tops, blush or pink (any pastel really), florals or skinny jeans. But I love seeing others embrace these fashions. Go for it. I have one ruffled shirt with lace but it passes because it is in colours I like. The ruffles are not in your face.
Wide legged crops. I am in right from the beginning. Well even before the beginning.

LisaP you are not alone. I haven't seen anyone look more flattering with cropped pants.

Unfrumped - "where's the rest of your shoes?" ROFL and exactly how I feel about cropped pants. And where's the rest of my money if you aren't selling me all of the fabric?

There are going to be a lot of petite women winning at thrift stores sooner rather than later when all these cropped pants get donated. One thing I hate about "fashion" is the waste of perfectly good clothes not being "desirable."

Two items that immediately came to mind were mules and rompers. My feet don't stay put in mules and a romper just looks too fussy for the bathroom. I'm surprised at the lack of cold shoulder love, I did pick up one this season (I was on the fence for a while but I'm a slow adopter of trends anyway) so now I'll be very curious how my WIW outfit is received on the forum.

Mules and rompers! Great points, Lisa.

I had two pairs of really great mules way back during one of their previous moments, when I also happened to be about 40 lbs lighter and not require the arch support I do now. Nothing I'm seeing on this round appeals, even for a sitting shoe. And rompers, well sure, I'd wear the right cold-shoulder short-short romper as loungewear, if I could borrow LisaP's heels to complete the look. Or no, I have SW fisherman platform heels.

I haven't heard any poison eye for cold shoulder looks, Lisa, just for how people feel about them on themselves, so your WIWs will probably get a lot of love.

I don't mind the cold shoulders on others. When I say I roll my eyes inwardly, it's more the fact that the designers all decided this was a thing at once - I know that's how fashion works, but it's like they all got together and decided to save a bit on fabric costs this year. I don't have a poison eye for the look.

While I continue to like clothes and want to look current, I'm becoming less interested in "fashion." If there is a trend that appeals to me and it looks reasonably good on me, great. But I don't feel a need to make any particular look work for me just because it's in style at the moment.

I will never full enjoy cropped pants, especially wide ones. I've learned that it is very hard for me to feel fab in pants with a lot of fabric in the leg.

I am meh on cold shoulder tops. I have one but don't feel a need for any more. I like the look of an off the shoulder top but it's not something I would add to my wardrobe. Most of the women I see wearing them are quite young; I don't want to look like I am sharing clothes with my 20 something daughters.

I don't care for white sneakers (I do like slip on fashion sneakers) and I am not a fan of the athleisure style.

@Lisa, regarding the cold shoulder look, I have an interesting reaction going on. I actually like how many of the more structured versions look. Don't have a poison eye going. Even so, and no matter how much I try to talk myself into being reasonable, I can't help feeling this trend is the ultimate in gimmicky clothing. I try to tell myself there is nothing more gimmicky about a cut-out sleeve than about a ruffle or a pleat or a row of unnecessary buttons, but my gut isn't listening to me, and keeps rolling its eyes right along with ChristineF. Darn gut. : ) I'll just have to keep it pacified while my more reasonable self waits out the trend.

I think I could adjust to most things, but my poison eye is leggings as pants. I don't think I'll ever change my mind on that.

I didn't used to like jersey maxi dresses, and I know they are not popular here, but I do like them this pregnancy, for flattery, comfort, and coverage in the heat. I never would have thought I'd like them.
