Is it crazy to be looking forward to fall already?

This hasn't been a terrific spring and summer for clothes. Some seasons you find everything is just right for you: the colours work, the styles work, everything fits, and there is a lot of choice. But other years, not so much, and this seems like it was one of them.

I find myself already mooning away at the new booties and darker colours coming into stores now and dreaming of putting together outfits that are a little more inspired than what is coming out of my closet right now. I found that my usual and reliable stores didn't work for me this year - Banana Republic, Club Monaco (a real bust) , GAP, even Aritizia was pretty repetitive - and I didn't buy much very much at all. As a result, my choices are pretty lean, and I'm wearing versions of the same thing every day (one of three denim dresses, white jeans, or black silky cropped/gaucho type pants) and bemoaning a lack of cute casual clothes, especially. The 35C heat today might have something to do with this.

I suppose this happens every now and then - hitting a season where nothing is appealing and the things you want don't exist.

So - I'm looking foward to fall already, and hoping next season's choices are wider. I have a major work conference coming up at the beginning of August, for which I'll need a mix of professional and casual clothes for 6 days - and I'm a little worried....

Anyone else ever hit a season where nothing happened?

First of all, I LOVED this season. I got many gems and continue to love wearing them.

Second, YES. I have already started planning (and putting the plan into action) for my Fall & Winter look. My imminent birthday presents and the NAS always steer me into the mood for Fall. High five, Lisa.

That said, I prefer Spring & Summer clothing. And I can't stand Winter.

Summer has never been my season. I just tolerate it, and by the time it gets warm enough here to really embrace my full summer wardrobe, the stores fill up with fall clothes, gah. I can't wait for NAS, even though I probably won't buy much. I just love fall clothes so much.

I am loving the current weather and not looking forward to fall at all in real life. However, I've been looking at fall fashion, too. I know every year they bring back velvet and animal print and dark florals like it's something new, but I'm still interested. I'm guilty of this little purchase already.

I have not been able to bring myself to even glance at fall yet. I'm getting stubborn now. I am angry with summer. LOL. It's behaving very badly this year.

This is the first summer season I am not feeling like you. Mostly I like fall/winter fashions much better. summer is so hard for me. This is the first summer I have made an effort to buy early. It is cooler so far this year, except for a few short days, so I have some summer things I have not worn yet. however, Like you, I have not found much inspiring this season. The big trends like the off the shoulder are not for me. They do not lend themselves to a work environment either. So without some real trends to pounce on I can understand how you feel. maybe just trying some new footwear or jewelry will make your same old feel better.

Ha, Angie . I knew that would be your answer. I like to think if i had access to a wider variety of shops and labels, I'd feel the same way. I am absolutely looking forward to what you put together for yourself for fall

Shedev - glad it's not just me. Aquamarine - that's what is happening to me now too . I have some $ to play with, but everything is a big mess of summer sale junk, and if I didn't want it back in May, I sure don't want it now!

Lisa - GAH ! I want those! I've never orderer from ASOS - the shoes are good are they? TTS? Rachy - you're having garbage weather, I know. I can't blame the weather on my dismay, I blame retail in general. GIVE ME SOME NICE CLOTHES!! I want cute brighter coloured t's that aren't limp pieces of junk. I want cute shorts that have an inseam longer then 2 inches. I want pants that are interesting!

If I lived somewhere with a cold summer such as Rachy has, I would love it. However, I don't, and I just don't like the heat. And by that I mean temps over 100F. I stipulate that because my mother said their weather was so very hot last week. It turned out it was only 80F, or just about perfect in my mind. I also bought early and have a good working wardrobe for extreme heat. I have a good selection of sandals, sleeveless tops and shorts and cropped pants. My life is super casual so that's about all I need.

I used to hate summer dressing but now it is my favourite season by far. Bare ankles and legs!! Pretty shoes and sandals!! Bare arms!! Fun accessories!

That said, I hear you. Some seasons are just a bust for whatever reason. Nothing tickles your fancy, or if it does, you can't source it.

And even though I have no wish for summer to end (it has barely started, here!) and I'm looking forward to wearing my summer clothes a whole lot more as the season goes on, I'm still looking forward to fall. I'm curious about what we'll see in the NAS and giving some thought to my needs for the upcoming season and where I'll put my money.

So far I know I want:

Aquatalia moto boots (hoping they offer an update of the one I got two years ago and wore to the ground).

New fun puffer coat (if I can find the right one)

A new pea coat.

A couple of "statement" knits. And replacement essentials like turtlenecks.

Would love a Smythe jacket...if the right one appears.

Updated booties -- need to replace/ upgrade those burgundy Hibous you put me onto. I could get them repaired but I wore them pretty far down and they are not exactly looking pristine. But I love the high, fitted shaft on them for wearing with crops.

Not crazy at all. Sounds like you're not quite feeling like you, what with the limited wardrobe. The heat doesn't help either. I think it's totally normal to be looking forward to a season when you can be more you.

Suz : the pre-fall and fall Smythes are already in stores . I found one I liked in the pre-fall collection but doubt it's still available here - I didn't pounce quickly enough. They sell out as fast as they come in at the store here... and funny about your burgundy Hibou's - if we were the same size, I'd give you mine. I think I wore them once. I'm an 8 - you're smaller, right? I wore the black ones to death, but the burg just never came out to play. Not sure why. I think my issue is two-fold: I'm feeling differently about my body now and what looks appropriate, and not sure what that is yet. Kind of a style shift, per se. And two - it wasnt' my season for colour. I need a fashion consultant - *cough* Angie.

Winter has properly arrived this week here - three days below 0 degrees C (that is cold for me!!) So last weekend I was finally wearing hats and gloves and layers.

I have bought steadily this winter and am not looking for anything else now - I plan to wear what I have and enjoy it. I have not bought a dressy coat so if one turns up at a good sale price I will pounce. I have had about two occasions where I would have worn one this year and may have two- three more so it is not a big need.

I have a Heavy Metal concert coming up (my cousin is in the band) and a cocktail party but I will be shopping my closet for these events. Most of my spare time at the moment is taken up with my son's rugby as he has made a representative team.

I am going to Australia in October where I hope to update my swimsuit and kaftan situation, and maybe some shorts too. Those were holes by the end of summer.

Lisa,I have had seasons like that - last winter I could find very little that appealed and even this winter the colours are black black black, a little grey, white, blush and throwing in rust and toffee. Not my best colours at all - I do wear them - but I am longing for some clear greens, teals and lovely reds.

I usually feel this way by half way through summer (if not earlier). Like JAileen, for me the heat has a lot to do with it. I would love to live in a cool climate in summer. And then move back here for winter.

As soon as the first warm days hit, I am looking forward to fall. I am just not a summer person or a summer dresser at all, ever really. I don't like pale colours, and I have great difficulty with shorter pants. But fall colours, boots, jackets and scarves are so much more fun. I love to layer, I love dresses with tights, I love boots and I love leather jackets. I'm looking forward to NAS and fall.

Lisa, for me the plum/ burgundy colour happened to work with a few knits and tops I was wearing, to bookend them. And made a nice change from my usual black winter footwear. But the shaft style was the main reason I wore them -- they allowed me to wear cropped pants for longer. So this year I don't care whether I get blue or black or burgundy or (maybe) grey -- it's the shaft shape and height I'm after, assuming we're still wearing cropped jeans. I'd have preferred an almond or pointed toe or even a rounded square, so I'll be on the lookout for that.

There is nowhere for me to see or shop for Smythe in person here. And I won't be in Toronto or Montreal in the next 6 weeks. So I have to wait for NAS.

Fall is for serious clothes! Love fall clothing and living in PNW it's used pretty much year round. I've been doing some thinking (like Suz, need a new pair of Aquatalia booties- could use 2 really) but haven't really been looking at trends, colors and such (that may start with NAS).

no, it's not crazy, and I see why you're feeling that way. Fall clothes are more substantial and allow for layering. That said, I'm in the opposite camp--I was longing for summer partially for the clothes-wearing opportunities. I LOVE the breeziness of summer skirts and dresses, and the varieties of silhouette that summer affords. Fall can be reasonably varied but we have almost 5-6 months of wintry weather here and I feel like I'm more restricted in what I can wear by the weather.

BTW did you go on with that idea you had about wearing A-line skirts in summer? I found that quite interesting and am keen to hear how you found it (although it doesn't sound like you did go ahead, if you are mostly wearing denim dresses).

I love love love ankle booties so I can't wait for fall for that, but I don't seem to be as lucky with longer sleeved blouses and dresses that fit my body.

I always love Fall and Winter clothes the best. Last year I did such a good job I really filled all legitimate holes and wish list items and I still dream about what I can buy. Like I'm trying to think where I can pretend to have a need so I can buy stuff. So, yes. With much less excuse.

I have done okay this summer, even a bit of wardrobe building. My summer clothes are making me happier than any other summer I can remember. But that's nothing compared to cold weather clothes. I like this year's summer closet because I can get dressed and have some variety. I like my winter closet because I truly love things in it.

I've had years like that too. I sure hope you find something for the fall...it can be awfully depressing not to find anything you want! But good for you for not settling and buying something just to buy it.

This year, I found a few nice things for spring and summer, but not too many. But that's OK--I don't mind repeating wears, and the stuff I bought was a little on the pricey side, so I want to wear it lots to get my money's worth.

I'm actually not looking forward to fall because I don't have any money right now. I bought a lot of new makeup recently, so my budget is blown for a while. I'll be looking for HEWIs, but that's it.
