Read this today, and thought about the conversation Lisap started from earlier this month about what to wear during the summer if you don’t want to wear a tee shirt. I hadn’t thought about wearing a vest as a shirt, but I’m loving this look...looks so fresh..what do you think?

What do I think? I think I suggested two vests from Yoox for Lisa p to wear as shirts on that thread.

ETA 3, if you count the funky olive one.

This is such a chic look , kkards, but I wonder where one would actually wear something like this . It’s kind of a conflicted styling - with the dressier trousers . I could see it being worn out to dinner , or to a cocktail party maybe .

I think it can work but the devil is in the details. A lot of vests are cut with deep armholes.

I do have one top/vest from Anthro from a couple of years ago that can be worn either way. But it strikes me that I don’t think I’ve ever worn it as a vest, only a top. I still have an old Levi’s denim vest that can work this way too, for a super casual look. It’s kind of cropped so works well with long floaty skirts in summer. But I think it’s too tight for me to wear buttoned up at the moment.

Kkards, that makes two of us. If I weren’t being lazy, I would’ve either taken pictures or made finds of all of them, so people could see without clicking through.
I agree with you that it’s an interesting question—seems to be popping up on a lot of threads.

This might also calm down a wacky pair of plaid cropped linen trousers (had one bought such a thing...). I think I donated my last linen gilet last year.

I ve just given a waistcoat to my daughter and she loves it.l used to have a lovely embroidered linen one from monsoon that I wore with shorts in the summer back in the day so l feel that l have been there but it’s a great look if it suits you.Didn’t Julia Roberts wear a pinstripe one in a film?Cant remember which one though.

I can imagine this worn over a t-shirt and unbuttoned
these vests are tailored and finding one that would fit well might be a challenge. Also, if lined in a traditional suiting way, will be too hot for summer.
Back in a day I had a long, fully lined linen vest front Gap that was absolutely gorgeous but was not easy to wear.

I think I weeded all mine out in the move. There’s a sure way to bring something back, like car-washing and rainfall!

I am going to give a relaxed version of this a try with an XCVI washable cotton gauze tie waist vest (in Fern) and a light tank underneath. I had a credit to use and free shipping. Kkards and FI, thanks for the idea! I am always looking for something slightly different from what I usually wear. The vest will also work with my much-worn lockdown cargos.

Love a waistcoat! I could see it maybe with a dressier Bermuda type short. But I must admit I prefer a waistcoat with trousers.

Kkards - jumps up and down...I volunteer as tribute. I have been searching for waistcoats for years. Inge (waves thanks) found me a leather Rachel Zoe about 3 yr ago and I have an ancient AT from the 90’s where the quilted silk is starting to shatter. I would wear this as a top w a lace cami peaking out. Usually buttoned. With jeans, crops, dressy ones esp cropped w velvet midi skirt tuxedo pants. Under a blazer. As Angie said open or closed over a tee or tank. Over a sheath dress. With a skirt pretty much anywhere depending on the fabric, pattern and fit. Oversized casual. Fitted as a top. Love this. I would have bought the Nili Lotan Angelina but I could not justify the price. I don’t like the scoop of the colins. I’ll be following if anyone finds nice ones. Zara has a ton but I have not been impressed in general with Zara’s quality and I’d rather wait (waiting...grey hairs multiplying..,). It seems D&G and some designers have them but again not within my budget. Wish they would come back. Sigh. Love!!!

I really like this look! As Janet points out, you do have to have the right fit, although I guess your first photo is an example of wearing a vest that doesn't fit closely--just put a cami underneath.

I posted the pic below on my waistcoat workshop just before Christmas!

I’ll have to experiment. Maybe with the lilac jeans? I like the look with fullness and flow on the bottom.

I’m chuckling at Jenn’s dry cleaning comment because a similar thought went through my mind — most of these kinds of vests are not easily laundered as they are not normally worn next to the skin.

My husband tells me I’m too worried about being practical but I just can’t help but think of these things! LOL

I thought of the Nili Lotan and Alex Mill versions of this last year but didn’t make the jump. I’ll post pics if I get brave with my leather vest!
