ETA: note--

The shirt is the one I happened to have on, not what I would ever wear with the vest.
The market is just that--a Brigadoon place that pops up once a week, except you never know what stalls will be there. You can't go back and get something another day, or return things, or know if you will see that seller ever again.
The close up in pic 3 is probably a better way to see skirt and vest together than how I'm holding the skirt up in 2.

I hope that's clearer than what I wrote the first time.

Went to the market for local honey and ground beef, came back with this vest for €35. I have no idea how accurate the labels are. It's my favorite color. When I first saw it, I passed, because I couldn't think of anything to wear it with other than black pants. Then I remembered that I've been looking for a slim sweater or other top in that color to go with skirt I'm holding up in #2. #3 is a close-up of that skirt and the vest together, without added distraction of other clothing patterns. What do you think? Will they work together? Chartreuse isn't my color, and doesn't match the green in the skirt, but the gold in the skirt sort of goes well with the brown flower.

ETA pix of vest on a hanger, front and back, a flaw I discovered (how can I fix it?) and a shot of the vest lying flat on the floor. I hadn't realized what a simple shape it is.

It's hard for me to tell how it may go with the skirt, as I'm getting distracted by the additional pattern in the top you are wearing. But it looks like a definite possibility. Regardless of that, the cardigan is GORGEOUS, and I think you'll love it, even if you do end up wearing it only with black pants.

TBH, the top also distracted me. I also love the color and can see why you were drawn to it. Do you have a simple black and white striped top? That might play nicely with it if you are wanting to pattern mix. It looks like it may have a fair amount of volume, so I could see slimmer bottoms or a pencil or tube skirt.

delurked, the top is one I got as work wear--but I like it so much, I wear it whenever. I like your pattern mix idea, will have to see if I have anything that fits that description, but am not sure how you mean to wear the second shirt. Underneath, peeking out at the collar?

If you are looking for honest feedback, I have to say that the pairing of the vest and top is not working to my eye. The hemlines are fighting with one another, and the overall effect is too busy IMHO, especially for a workplace. I think a piece this detailed needs a very simple supporting act underneath.

It's a very dramatic, arty piece! I can see why it appealed to you. Is it felted wool? Or boiled wool? I am not sure how the flaw can be repaired but perhaps you should take it back and show them? Do they have another?

I would do as Janet suggests and wear it with a very simple support act and dramatic jewellery, e.g. a cuff and earrings.

What Suz and Janet said. That blue looks wonderful on you. I would keep the under layer simple and sleek, otherwise the topper can overwhelm you quickly.

Janet and Joy, lol, no, I'm not planning to wear this top with it! I'm thinking I'll wear it with a top in a solid color of the flowers and black pants or maybe the skirt in pix 2 & 3. The top I have on is just the shirt I happened to wear to the market. That's why I included a pic of the skirt and vest without other distracting patterns (3). I would like feedback on that combo. I put in a find of the shirt for delurked, because she asked about it.

Suz, it is felted wool, I think. Definitely not boiled. If you look closely, you might be able to see that there is a little grid in the fabric. I don't know exactly how it was made. Maybe woven fabric that was then felted up? Is that a thing? I really doubt the seller can help me repair it--am not even sure she'll be there again next week. I wasn't joking about it being a market, and seeing the vest while on the way to the honey stall. I don't think I've seen this seller before. I might ask a laundry if they can help. Ok, I was wondering why you marked my response as “comedy” but seriously, it is hard to tell what is a top and what is a skirt in pic 2, especially viewed on a phone screen. And it is very hard to assess the vest when you are wearing it over that shirt.

I would take the time to put on outfits with that vest, exactly as you would style them, before deciding to commit, especially since it has a flaw. It’s the kind of thing that can be a closet orphan very easily. It’s a really ornate piece — pattern, volume, collar — and I still maintain that it’s quite busy to wear with that skirt pattern for a workplace. I can see it over a black turtleneck and jeans or a solid skirt.

Janet, thanks for the advice on skirt + vest. The shirt is for work, but as we've established, I would not wear the shirt and vest together. I don't think I'll wear the vest to work--will have to wait and see a long time first before considering that. Unfortunately, there is no decision to be made re whether to commit; I bought it at a market, where the stalls are taken down at the end of the day and put back up the following week. Venders might come back next week, or they might not. There's no telling. You are right about the lighting making it very hard to see what's what in #2. If it weren't for the way the photo upload works I'd redo it. As it is, I'd have to take them nearly all down to put up a new one & leave the rest the same. #3 does a better job of showing the patterns together.

I’m with Janet - the vest is not working with the skirt to my eye. It looks too busy. The vest is a statement item and needs more of a plain supporting act in solid color. Yes to black pans, a skirt or jeans.

love the color...i'm not a pattern mixer, so i'd wear it with black, navy or white pants or jeans, with a solid top...and i'd probably belt it with a wide belt so as to give it, and you, some shape

I like the dramatic vest, and it suits what I have seen of your style, FashIntern. I like that it's also the type of thing that you can pop on at home and feel quite fabulous in - because why can't we feel fabulous in our at home outfits!

I don't fancy it with the patterned top although the colour palettes match. May I suggest a solid black, red, cream or navy layering piece, black pants or jeans, and black footwear.

FashIntern, YES! I read your post and the comments There are similar suggestions. I like delurked's suggestion of an outfit lab too.

Remember that you can't really layer over the vest so it will have to be the right temperature to wear it. Don't know if that's worth considering?

I see no connection in the pattern of the skirt and the vest. It’d be very haphazard and doesn’t look intentional. The paisley pattern is extremely busy, and honestly looks a bit dated. The vest is more folkloric, so an entirely different beast.
ETA looking closer, the paisley is on a mini -wale corduroy fabric, so the texture is also fighting. It’s too fussy for the more substantial vest. I haven’t seen that style corduroy in eons

i think it's a great find, and would be fabulous in a business casual setting with a simple background - black pants or skirt and black top - or with jeans. I agree with others that it doesn't work with the skirt.

I actually like the skirt (sucker for paisley anything and like cords) & the vest but definitely not together.
I’d wear solids with each if I were wearing them.

Angie, exactly. One person after the other tells me that the shirt and vest don't match, and every single time, I have explained that I never meant to suggest they did. So when you came along and posted the same thing again, after I had already repeated several times that that is not a question...

The vest will have to be worn over thick layers, because the fabric is too itchy otherwise. That much I could tell from any shirt, even this one.

Thank Opaline. And btw, the skirt has appeared in several of my WIWs this winter, generally with solids, although I sometimes wear a patterned scarf as outerwear with it.

Thanks Angie! Now we're talking! There is getting to be a consensus among people who are looking at the skirt and vest that they don't think they work together. But it will certainly work with black pants, and possibly with my green ones. I don't think I have any other skirts straight enough to even try it.

The vest gives me a boho vibe. I would wear it with a black turtleneck, simple black wool pants. Maybe hoop earrings or a small dangly earring. Black booties.
As others have said, let the vest be the star.

Glad I waited to comment! I love the vest. I wonder if you can carefully mend the bit where the stitching looks undone to me ( on my phone)- pic 8? That's what I would do, carefully turn it back under and stitch with tiny stitches by hand. I'm quite good at that sort of thing, trained by a "make do and mend" sort of mother. And I love the mention of Brigadoon- an old fave movie, and I saw the show in London in the late 80s.
As it is your fave colour and the price was not too bad then it's still a win to me. I would wear it with mostly plain stuff to let it shine. Unless you happened to have some boots that colour?

That is quite the wildcard piece! It looks too casual for more dressy workplaces, so I think until you are settled in a job and understand the dress code, I would keep it for the weekend.

However, boho / folk style is something that I struggle with, it is outside what I wear, so I am not the right person to give advice on how to wear this.
