Wait, did I miss something? Are you off to Antarctica, Janet?

I am! Chance of a lifetime. I will sacrifice wardrobe budget and lots of other things if need be, to have the chance to travel and see places that most people only see in photos.

Janet - wow antartica!! that is truly amazing!! I hope you post pics!! I will have to google to see what might be on your tour agenda. That is a spectacular though and I sure you will have an amazing time. Then you can come home and burberry, well it will always be waiting for you!! PS that's a gorgeous trench - leather...hum,...burberry...does it get better than that!! Have a safe and wonderful trip!! PS someone's cold weather capsule better be in good shape!!

Janet, that's so awesome!

And yes, I'd rather have, say, a weekend someplace awesome with my son than those Rockstuds. I still spend a good amount of money on clothes and accessories but my spending limit for any given item is well (well!) under $1,000. At least, it has been so far.

I would love to have my engagement/wedding rings redone. The original has my husband's grandfather's diamond in it, but after nearly 20 years, the prongs need help and my tastes have changed a lot. I would love to add the diamond my father gave to my mother, and most of all, I would love to have my daughter's ashes made into a diamond as the focal point of the ring. They say that if you don't force the diamond into a particular color, it does it's own thing and ends up a natural yellow (which I would love) and I would have to make it a princess cut... How to get all of those mismatched diamonds into one ring is a puzzle all it's own.

But in more realistic, may happen in my lifetime wishes, I would have to say a wonderful cashmere sweater would be my top choice.

A Hermes Birkin bag. I got butterflies just typing that.

Jean Paul Gaultier couture. But then I'd need somewhere to wear it.
I was blown away by his exhibit in San Francisco a few years ago.

What an amazing thread! I'd probably have to vote Frye boots, but an amazing winter coat would be a close second....

Sarah - what a wonderful idea to put all those diamonds together. Perhaps a jeweler could recommend another form - a broach or necklace where you have more space. I did see a link where Wendy Brandes redesigned an engagement ring with multiple stones http://wendybrandes.com/blog/2.....designing/ for http://www.unefemme.net I did not know they could make diamonds out of ashes. It would allow you to keep your daughter very close to you. That is a very special idea and I could see how that could be a great source of comfort. Good luck. I think you figure out what to do with your stones that will be beautiful and very special.
Anna - that's the problem with gorgeous things. You need a venue to show them off!! But I have every faith that you would manage that brilliantly!!
amiable - lovely and practical choices. It's blizzarding here and they seem the ultimate good sense and perfect choices right now!!

Janet, how cool! (Literally, I guess)

I just decided what my splurge would be, at least for this year: a leather jacket from Lucky Brand. They've got ones in colors right now and they are gorgeous. Also 500 bucks which i suppose I could afford, if I stopped buying clothes until Christmas.

Krista - sorry I missed you. A Hermes Birkin is the ultimate ne plus ultra of drool!! I can't imagine anything more chic!! I can understand your excitement even as you type. May yours come to you!!
Laura - that's the tough part. One truly wonderful thing or many useful and enjoyable things. How stocked is your wardrobe? Also never forget the power or stalking. Viva just found her r&b tux jacket on sale. I hope you get your jacket too!!

I think I would love something designed just for me by Karl Lagerfeld

This is such a great question, in my opinion, because I think the concept of what's a "splurge that is independent of cost" is really relative and situational from person to person.

So, some folks don't think twice about dropping $500 on a pair of amazing and well made boots that they know they'll wear for years (I'm totally guilty of this. But if you consider that I purchased my oldest pair of Frye engineer boots over 25 years ago and I still wear them all the time, the actual cost over time was really low).

This is also true of the numerous other pairs of "high end" boots and leather jackets that are in my closet. I wear them all the time for years (because most are pretty classic in their style/cut or I just don't care if they're considered "fashionable" by society's standards).

So I didn't think twice about snagging a new pair of Frye Jenna Skull Leather boots when a brand new pair came up on ebay in my size for $300 (they're $600 at all the ecommerce retail sites that sell them). Some folks would have called that a splurge and I called it a bargain.

So, to me, if I were going to splurge on an item and cost was not at all a consideration I would want something that was unique, that not everyone else has. So, a designer bag would be out, for example, simply because it's not unique enough. I would also want it to be something I will wear very often, so versatility is a big factor in deciding whether to splurge (again, going back to the concept of cost per wear).

For me, this would be represented by either a very unique piece of antique/vintage jewelry that is well above the price point I normally spend at (I used to deal antique jewelry and vintage clothing when I lived back east and there were definitely a few pieces that I wish I'd had the luxury of keeping instead of reselling) or an incredibly unique piece of jewelry that is really representative of my rather quirky style and is made by an artisan jewelry designer. So it isn't mass produced.

Most of you may find this creepy but I have, for many years, loved skull and anatomy related stuff (long story as to why, mostly having to do with remembering that at some point we're all going to die so it's important to remember to live, and I find it interesting that these have now become trendy in recent years). So my splurge would likely be something by this jewelry designer: http://www.kimericlilot.com

In particular, I would really love to own this particular ring largely because it meets my criteria for "cost not a factor big-time splurge," (it costs just under $5k) I would wear it all the time, and the symbolism of it resonates with me (there's an element of memento mori jewelry and remembering to think about enjoying life while we're here: http://www.kimericlilot.com/ring16/

This was such a great question. I really enjoyed how much it made me think about what really is a "no cost consideration splurge" for me. And the replies really made me think a lot about how personal and subjective such a thing is! I'm new to the community and I really love how everyone's conversations seem so supportive and thoughtful!

Diane - and you could actually appreciate the artistry and tailoring in a way most of us can't!! You deserve a gorgeous designer piece!1

leopardluxe - absolutely splurge is relative. I think that ring deeply resonates with you and it is unique. Plus what a conversation piece. If you are going to have beautiful jewelry then you want to be able to wear it. That would be a great and meaningful splurge and totally unique!!

gryffin, exactly! Of course, now I'm really thinking about how meaningful such a thing would be (on several different levels having to do with where I'm at in life right now) and *actually* seriously considering splurging on it sometime over the next year.

A great mechanical watch. Not with real bling or anything, but something with craft behind it.

leopardluxe - go for it!! I hope you get it and enjoy every minute of wearing it!!
Astrid - I am a watch girl and I enjoy mine very much. I think that would be a stellar and practical splurge!!
