Today I was looking at my vacation, sick leave & comp time accruals. For the entire year of 2013 and I did not take a full week of vacation at once. At most three days off for short trips.
So I bought shoes & clothes. And caught myself today looking at a pair of heeled sandal boots .
Ugh, this definitely needs to change in 2014.

Yes, you definitely need to plan a long, 2 week vacation at least. I hope your schedule lets you do that!

The planning is half the fun. Do you have any place in mind?

anna, this is dreadful. it's not healthy for you , let alone your pocket book. what are some of the options open to you about taking a real chunk of time off?

Well unfortunately I don't have a lot of vacation accrued right now. I got a really bad flu last November & my back acted up in December. I zeroed out my sick leave & had to use vacation.
I'm planning a long weekend in March to go wine tasting with a girlfriend up in the Okanagon Valley in British Columbia, Canada.
I need to start accruing comp time instead of OT pay.

hoping it's an option to accrue comp time instead of OT pay. sometimes, if a place is short staffed, it's cheaper to pay OT than have someone away.

But this is worse! I fervently hope you can accrue comp time, and that your March get-away will be a solid start to the restorative time you need.

I can completely empathize with shopping standing in for time off. Find a way to get the time off -- especially now that you have such a fabulous wardrobe to play in!!!

I like the way Mo stated it. I hope you get a chunk of time off soon. I know I always like to have a trip planned even if it is a few months out. It might help curb the shopping just having it on the calendar. Good luck.

You need to take more time off. Whether you go somewhere fun or just stay at home and relax, it's good to get a break! Have fun at the wine tasting.

I hope you can get a nice vacation somewhere beautiful this year. I always like to shop while I'm on vacation--it's nice to have souvenirs, and I do enjoy a good fashion souvenir! So perhaps you can have your cake and eat it, too.

I'm glad you found this out, Anna. Please do take time out for yourself. I was always a big one for trying not to use the vacation time so I could get it paid out. But I can see now that that wasn't a good choice. We need time off, period. I hope you can give yourself a nice vacation (or two) this year!

Yes, you need vacation time. Your work will begin to suffer also if you don't have some time off.

In April I took three weeks off and went to Costa Rica. I hadn't had three weeks off since, maybe, I was 16? It was an incredible experience and I saw why Europeans (are said to) take such long vacations. My normal mode is a long weekend here or there. But length matters!

I don't know, some people prefer wid… err… I will refrain from completing that off-color joke but I just couldn't help myself.

It's hard when you have to use up all of your vacation on sick days! That happened to me at my last corporate job.

Maybe that is my problem too! 2013 was a tough year, no vacations, my boy's ilness, the hubby working abroad.
I want to change that in 2014 because I still make many shopping mistakes

I think this is a good goal for 2014! The wine tasting sounds wonderful - I have been there and it is a nice spot to visit. Plan and take some trips and vacations - you deserve it.
