K/R: I need opinions on This jacket please!

I saw this Michael Kors field jacket on Nordstrom's website, it was an amazing price, so I thought I'd try it. I loved it and how it was styled in photos, but when I pulled it out of the box my first thought was "too shiny and too any details". I did not like it at first try. What really threw me was the contrasting back. I tried it again...I liked it better. I like it in pictures. I'm just afraid my plain Jane ways will keep me from grabbing it and going. I'm just not that fancy. The more I wore it the better I liked it, but I'm struggling with my initial reaction, my gut. Isn't my gut always right? Maybe not.

This coat has a lot of great features going for it, waxed cotton so it's waterproof, great, sturdy hardware, it's lined, and overall it is super well made. If I could convince myself it's just not that fancy, it would be a great go to. And it really isn't, I'm just more accustomed to less "fancy". Also, I got a medium. The fit it fine and I could fit a sweater under, but I am tall. Too short? Should I have tried a large instead?

Anyway...yes or no? Your opinions do matter!

PS sorry about the crap pics... Just got home from work and it is very dark out!

I like the jacket and don't think it reads "fancy" at all, although I certainly understand stepping outside the comfort zone. I really like the contrasting back and hardware. I think it would be very versatile, but you have to be comfortable wearing it. Since Nordies has a good return policy, I say keep it around a little while. It sounds like you are warming up to it.
I can't make a call about length. I think a full length picture would be necessary for that.

It doesn't read as "fancy" to me--in fact, it sort of reminds me of a fisherman's jacket with all those zips and seams. It certainly has a lot going on.

You said you liked the pics of the way it was styled? Can you recreate those looks from the clothes in your closet? It just sounds as if you two just need to get better acquainted.

Hmm, I don't see anything "fancy" here, just a more interesting version of the ubiquitous classic field jacket. My field jacket is a total workhorse so I'm definitely going to vote KEEP. I think it looks terrific on you.

Thanks for your feedback thus far...I know it's not "fancy", it just happens to have more detail than I would normally go for with the contrasting colors (I know, black and olive are really out there!). Thank you so much for your feedback, It really is helpful!

And yes, it is algo. Can you make peace with that--or is it a deal breaker?

Yes, I was thinking a lot going on too. I think you should only keep the jacket if its ALGO nature is a plus for you ... there are lots of versions of this jacket around without the color blocking, and you might like those better.
In the interests of full disclosure, though, I have a poison eye for this sort of two-tone garment.

I think it is good from the front, I kind of like the contrasting sleeves, it's the contrasting back that I am most unsure about...

I agree with Gaylene; this is like upscale rough-and-tumble but not fancy to my eye. I like it!

I like Alaskagirl's assessment, that it is "upscale" but not "fancy." I agree with those who say to keep it around for a while and see how you feel about it. Sometimes our initial gut isn't right, because there can be a bit of an adjustment when we are suddenly confronted with an item that isn't what we thought it was going to be. Once you get over your shock of the jacket being more detailed than you had imagined, you will be able to look at it with a fresh eye and determine whether you want to work it into your style or not.

I really like it -- it reads sort of upscale sporty to me, which I love. The back is actually my favorite part, but I personally love a little shoulder emphasis, which the light color blocking might provide.

I'm a big believer in gut reactions in general, but my gut reactions about clothes have been wrong many times, and I've been glad I've given a chance to an item that's out of my comfort zone.

For me, the gut reaction is important, but there have definitely been times where I just needed a little space to adjust to a new idea or look.

I really like this jacket, and I like it a lot on you. I love Janet's "upscale sporty" description, and I agree with her that the back view is really fantastic. To me, this is a fun and interesting twist on classic sportswear, which is really what Michael Kors does so well. I love it.

I really like it, but that's not important - what's important is do you like it and will you wear it. It doesn't look too fancy, it does look upscale sporty (and I like upscale sporty, but do you?) I think the length is fine, and so is the sizing. It looks like a fantastic MK jacket! Are you ready for an upscale sporty look? Keep it if you are!

I totally know what you mean about it feeling "fancy" though I'm wondering if "fussy" is closer to what you mean? Do the details bug you in any way, like the zippers moving or jingling when you walk or some of the seams pulling oddly in certain positions when you move? Is the jacket heavy, or does the fabric make lots of noise when you move? These are some things that've caused me to send things back even though they *looked* really cool.
It's all about how you feel in it and whether you'll be inclined to grab for it, but I agree with everyone else that you should keep the tags on it and give it a little time.
I love sporty looks like this though I often find the different colored arms look off on me - but I'm petite and am thinking it's something a tall person could pull off, sounds like that's the case!
I think it blends perfectly with your haircut and glasses, especially the color-blocked back which I think is really figure flattering. Might also look good to unzip it halfway down in the front for a different look.

It has a very sporty vibe to me-- in it with the short hair I could mistake you for one of our Colorado adventure sports ladies who ventured down from Breckenridge to try out the red rock in my neck of the woods.

First, I think the jacket looks great on you and don't think it reads fancy.

Because I have a strong minimalist streak, field/barn jackets always seem to have a lot going on -- so if the general category of jacket doesn't bother you that's a plus right there!

One thing *I* really like about the contrasting elements on this one is that it takes it further away from being a unisex garment; that's something that could be a con for you or others.

Re the gut instinct: This can cut two ways. I find if I choose something outside my comfort zone and keep coming back to it because I like the actual item and how it looks on me then it gets worn. And yes, I usually have to do more experimentation to get it to look right with other things I own. And love a little reassurance that I don't look too stupid in it.

If it's outside the zone and I like the IDEA of the item but am kind of meh about it despite seeing its practical uses, then it's best if it goes back. Otherwise I tend to not wear it (loose fit olive green cropped pants, I'm looking at you and hoping fall and boots will get you off the bench...).

It sounds like you're in the first category with the jacket, but only you can know for sure!

Again, thank you to all. It is hard for me to step out of my comfort zone...I love clothes with interesting,cut, drape, fabrication, but they are all usually plainf otherwise...no embellishments, contrasting colors, etc.

What I like about this jacket is that it is interesting with a classic shape and it is so well made and functional...I'm going to give it a go.

I don't think it looks fancy or too fussy at all. It had a country/sporting vibe to it.

The jacket does not too fancy to my eyes. I know why you might feel that way. Michael Kors always puts shiny gold zippers and hardware on everything. I have found some pieces that I liked in the past, but was turned off by the Kors logo everywhere - on the buttons, the zippers, the pockets on the back of the pants, etc. If these details are not garish on the jacket and do not bother you, then keep it! It looks very functional and practical.
