I HATE TURTLE NECKS!

Ugh! So, I heard that you should always try new styles, but I think I'll stick with my good ol' band tees from now on. I decided to give turtlenecks a try. It was Ralph Lauren (I love him) maroon and cropped right above my naval. I wore a gold metallic mini to add some wow to the outfit with ankle boots and black leggings. It looked great, but soooo uncomfortable. Lesson learned: no more turtlenecks!

What part was uncomfortable? The cropped, or too much bulk around the neck, or itchy fabric?

The neck was terrible and made me uncomfortably warm. I wore it outdoors and here in Minnesota, September is about 60 degrees but it was much too warm

Cropped turtleneck does strike me as silly fashion in terms of practicality. I'm in Canada and I only wear turtlenecks in winter. Maybe you can wear yours over a another layer when it gets colder?

I can't wear turtlenecks! My neck is short and my bosom is too big lol. So I enjoy this incredibly chic style on others;)

60 degrees was probably too warm--but if you are showing tummy skin, then, yeah, you won't want it to be colder. Put it aside and try it again with a shirt. You'll have lots of opportunities to wear it in Minnesota, in winter, if you layer.

I love Tnecks but they need to be in a very lightweight fine gauge knit and the neck can't be overly tight. The finer knit is usually softer and instead of "grabbing" the neck, it just drapes on the neck. I am in Manitoba and it is sometimes nice to have a cozy light wool inner layer that covers from chin to hip.

Turtlenecks used to be one of the mainstays of my winter and fall wardrobe. Now that scarves are everywhere all the time, I find I prefer the versatility and adaptability of a scoop or crew neck top with a scarf. Also, there are many many kinds of turtlenecks...some are stiffer, some softer, some bunch around your neck, some have one solid fold. If you like the look you can keep searching.

I second the suggestion of layering, and waiting until later in the season, when temperatures lower.

I find the World of Turtlenecks is varied, from the thin, soft cotton figure hugging ones with high necks best worn by small busted, long necked gals to chunkier, large collar cropped ones (sounds like what you have), meant to be worn as a topper, outside mostly (under a sleeveless puff vest) - and everything in between. Try to wear it differently before completely crossing it out.

I am very, very picky about turtlenecks. Was the neck too tight? I really hate that. It also has to be exactly the right height / length. Don't give up on them completely. You might be surprised to find a good one down the road. But I agree, they can be tricky.

I love turtlenecks, but I am super picky about them. And, as your "neighbor" in Wisconsin, I can say how fab they are come December when it is truly cold. Although if cropped, I would probably pair with high waisted trousers as I would not want any skin exposed to the 20F days.

I tend to stick to super soft pieces and layer them underneath sweaters. I also am picky about the necks. They have to be big enough to be comfortable but not so big they look sloppy.

Maybe a mock turtleneck or a cowl neck would suit you better.

The others have spoken wisely. I used to wear those close-fitting ribbed turtlenecks years ago until I realized that they do my large-busted, short waisted body very few favors. I do sometimes wear looser turtlenecks now, but definitely in cold weather!

Try it again when the weather cools off, with a slim layer underneath, and see if that feels better. I hate it when an outfit ends up being uncomfortable, so I sympathize!

I have a sensitive spot on my throat that cannot touch any fabrics. I even have trouble with some high crew neck shirts. I constantly pull on it. I don't like jewelry either. For me, I think it is some sort of a sensory issue. I wish I can wear turtleneck though. I love how they look.

I love turtlenecks. But I have a long neck and short hair and live in a cold climate.

But for me, 60 degrees would be too warm for most. I do have a sleeveless one in modal that I would wear in such temps. but otherwise -- I wait until late November.

Me too. Turtlenecks make me feel like I'm choking. I think they look quite nice on others, but the discomfort is too great for me.

Part of the problem could be that you're wearing it in the wrong weather. A navel-baring top is meant for warm weather, and a turtleneck is meant for cold, so what you have there is a seasonally-confused top that could add to the problem!

Well, lucky for me, a lot of what I hated at 14 is not an issue for me all these decades later. If you don't like them now, why try and wear them? Maybe in 10, 20 years you'll come back and find they're great in cold winters.

I love turtlenecks and would wear them year round if weather permitted. I have what I consider to be an ugly neck. I wear turtlenecks up, not folded over. I never wear any neckline lower than crew. I esp do not like V necks as I think my neck and chest are icky and do not wish to expose them. If I have shirts with open neck lines, I use scarves to hide/disguise.
