I Don't Think Dress is Working… Might Go to Plan B

Thank you for the replies. I took some photos wearing the dress.

I wanted to wear it to an event that is somewhat dressy. The dress code is more dressy casual. I'm afraid this dress might be too dressy and I'm thinking it's not as flattering as I believed it would be. Wrap dresses are usually flattering on me, but this one just looks like a whole lot of teal fabric on my body.

I'm a full hourglass and I have had a hard time finding clothes lately. It's very frustrating. I want to look pulled together and attractive but I cannot find anything that appeals. I have a hard time wearing button up blouses (gaping at the bust) The silky blouson blouses, or silky tunics, that are everywhere do not look good on me. They only make me look larger. I went to the mall today and looked at everything in JCPenney and Macy's. I wanted to go into Dillards but had a time constraint. I might go back tonight.

This event is an all-women event held in the evening. Wine is served, no dinner. Think "dressy book club". Last month most of the women wore black trousers, nice top or sweater, some people wore beautiful scarves, skirts, boots, beautiful jewelry. I feel like I will stick out as frumpy Plain Jane in this dress. I don't know what accessories to wear with it.

I might go the top and trousers route. Last month I wore gray pants, gray V-neck sweater, creme camisole, flats. It is going to be 80 degrees so I have to keep that in mind. I can't wear a sweater unless it's thin.

Sorry for the long post. I do think I will save this dress for another event and look for another outfit. Any suggestions on what I can wear is appreciated.

what about some leopard or patterned shoes for some ectra oomph? patterned cami?

What if you added a statement necklace, smaller earrings and a bright pop of color in a clutch...red, green, orange, yellow, etc? Maybe with some bright strappy sandals too. I think the color is beautiful on you. You don't look frumpy at all, but it is a lot of blue with nothing to break it up.

Thank you. I love the idea of a pop of color. It was my intention to buy some bright shoes and jewelry but haven't done it yet. If I wear this dress in the future I definitely go that route.

I think the dress looks really nice on you. When I read your post I was expecting something awful. That is not what I see. A statement necklace would be nice. How about a scarf? I think the dress could be considered a blank canvas for some interesting accessories. I'm no expert, but I wouldn't give up on the dress if I were you.

I think you look lovely! The color is great on you and the wrap is flattering. The nude pumps work, but they do read as dressier than a leopard print or bright color would. You mentioned in your other post that you had a berry colored shoe. Did you try those? I like Carter's suggestion of statement necklace and fun clutch.

Thank you JAileen, I think I will definitely try it with statement necklace and fun shoes. My hair will look a lot better too -- it won't be pulled back as it is in these photos. That might help.

Yes to the berry shoes. I have not found any in the stores. I'm still looking. I did place an order for these but read a bad review that stated that they were really much lighter pink, so I canceled my order.

I think the dress looks lovely on you. I know what you mean though - if others are wearing pants & skirts you may not feel that the dress is "right" for the occasion. Do you have any more casual clothes you feel great in? Maybe post some more photos & see if we can come up with something

The dress looks wonderful on you! If you are looking for something to wear with a great pair of black pants or jeans, you might try a wrap or faux wrap top. But your dress also seems appropriate for a "dressy book club" meeting.

Wedge heels would dress it down a bit, but I agree it's a nice dress on you!

This dress is absolutely lovely on you! Have no fear -- you can wear it and wear it well! I love the ideas so far -- some patterned footwear, a clutch, perhaps.

But if it feels too dressy, maybe some fluid pants with a simple, very lightweight (e.g. cotton/ silk or modal) knit top?

Oh my I love Ingunn and her beautiful outfits she created. Totally fab. I tried on some stuff tonight. Didn't buy anything. It's a hodgepodge of not so good looks. Thanks for all advice. I'll post what I end up wearing.

I very much prefer the dress to the outfits from the dressing rooms. I think it is flattering, and its solid colour and mid-length make it more of a dress up/dress down sort of dress that depends on accessories to make it casual or dressy. With a statement necklace and nice heels this dress could be quite dressy, but with a patterned scarf and wedges and a watch it would look far more casual. I think the dress is a great buy!

I like 1 and 3 best of your try on outfits. You could add an arty necklace

I like the dress a lot! But you have to be comfortable. I think it just needs some pop. A big statement necklace with multi colors comes to mind...

I think the dress is wonderful on you and a great basis for a lot of possibilities. You don't look plain at all! Out of the new ones the blue stripe is my favorite.

You look absolutely lovely in the dress although I totally understand if it feels a little to much for the event coming up. I'd give one last go at "casualizing" it especially since it's perfect for the weather you expect.

I think the dress/color look beautiful on you! No "frumpy Plain Jane" whatsoever, that's for certain. Lucky you to be able to wear wrap dresses, too! I agree that maybe a more casual shoe - a wedge or metallic, maybe some color in a fun necklace (saw some very fun bright yellow, orange or fushia ones at J.Crew recently), or even a casual topper if it cools off at night could dress this down and look wonderful. Can't wait to see what you come up with!

Are you kidding me? That dress is fantastic on you! I would wear it in a heartbeat, even if I was the dressiest person in the room. I adore the simplicity of the nude pumps, and I would just choose earrings *or* a necklace an call it a day. Your lovely hair and eyes will complete the picture. I don't think you could have chosen a more flattering color for your complexion. Please, please, please wear it!!!
