I found I was sticking to a uniform, which can become stale. All my pants were the same cut. I had duplicates in multiple colors of the tops I favored. I don't duplicate now unless it's an absolute wardrobe workhorse. Instead I look for a variety of shapes/silhouettes that can pair together.
For example instead of only mid-rise straight leg jeans, I now have high waist skinny jeans, boyfriend jeans, bootleg jeans, high waist flare leg jeans, cropped flare leg jeans, cropped skinny leg jeans, high waist skinny crops, etc. I also purchase several finishes and colors to add interest, although not distressed because that's not my thing.
You can always liven up a wardrobe with your accessories. Scarves, shoes, belts, bags and jewelry will go a long way to change up a look. You can test out a new color you are thinking of bringing into your palette. This fall they are showing a lot of wine, burgundy and reddish purple. Those colors are not part of my palette, but I purchased a pair of booties, a belt and a purse in those colors to update my look and keep it fresh. (Belt not pictured, but was purchased on sale at a BCBG outlet store.)
