Thank you, Approprio! I tend to avoid these discussions since the applications and inferences people make usually have no relation to my own thinking and readings into MBTI/Jungian theory. The introduction to the article to which you have linked provides a good explanation of why I’m dubious about the insights a person would gain about her wardrobe choices after being labeled by an Internet “test”.

ETA. One caution: the whole premise of MBTI/Jungian theory is that our cognitive preferences are wired into our brain so that they NEVER change, Ou behaviors though, can vary tremendously as we grow older, learn more, and adapt to our environments.

Agree with Gaylene. I’d probably categorise myself, no quiz, as ISTJ... only with colour and crazy pattern

INTJ til I die! Lol that test told me I’m ISTJ but I’m not buying it. Every description of an INTJ is me to a T.

I’d guess that it’s reflected in my dressing in the sense that I’m rebellious against the idea of what I “should” be wearing. I dress for my own personal comfort in the sense of feeling physically comfortable and that I look good.

Gaylene, agreed! There's only so much we can infer from cognitive preferences, because so many other things guide our tastes and choices - everything from the cultures that form us, to the shapes and colours that suit us.

That being said, I do find the idea of hard-wiring useful, because knowing what can and can't be changed is a good guideline for self-development. For instance, I know I have a strong preference for _N_P, and I probably always will, so trying to change that will make me miserable and frustrated. But the other preferences are less pronounced, so I can be an introspective and analytical INTP or a sociable and adaptive ENFP when I don't want to be an ENTP wiseass.

Fun! Thank you for the link BC. I just took the test and discovered I am a CAMPAIGNER (ENFP-T). I am fiercely independant (true), crave creativity (true) and freedom (OMG so true), and like social relationships (true again).
So, how does this affect my wardrobe you ask?
I like freedom. Freedom of changing my mind in the morning but also freedom of suddenly packing and leaving for adventure. So I need multiple wardrobes in fact. Capsules are a great solution. Yet they have to be flexible enough to leave room for last minute creativity.

Roxanna, we are similar. We share the "feelings" trait and, like you, I have what others (including my husband) might call a large wardrobe. But this is not the only thing we have in common. I too love (no, wait, lu-urve) to mix and match items, I too have a hard time letting them go... until I let them go and then never think about them again. Now that I know we are almost personality sisters, I understand why I found your posts so engaging.

Hmm. I have traditionally tested as INFP, but I took that test and got “DEFENDER” (ISFJ-T) as a result. I think my responses have shifted with age, and I know I handle certain things with more balance and a different mindset than when I was younger. I’m not sure how this is reflected in my style though. I’ll have to look further. I’ve never really read much about ISFJ!

ETA: I just read the description more fully, and it sure does seem to fit! I read it out loud to my husband and he agreed. https://www.16personalities.com/isfj-personality

Interesting doing BC's test. I've done Internet tests many times and once did a workplace course with a facilitator, in 2002. Every other time I've been ESFJ. On this one I was ESFP-T for turbulent. I found the P part unlikely rather than J: but am amused by Harmonica's pic which says that ESFPs would match their socks to their earrings as there is more truth to that than I like to admit! I think the Feeling part is particularly important in my wardrobe and maybe why I've been really enjoying your posts Roxanna!

The description of my type emphasizes analysis throughout. That is extremely accurate. Knowing, understanding and analyzing are the same thing to me. Over the years, I’ve learned that not everyone is like this, so I try to soften my questions, but occasionally people are still taken aback. Please forgive me if I come across as looking down on you. It is unlikely that i intend it that way.
I was surprised, reading through, at how accurately the description applies to my son. I’ve always thought we were very similar, but he has no interest in taking this type of quiz.

Jenni NZ, that explains a lot. I like you, and you often have good things to say, but so often I look at our exchanges and scratch my head. I don’t know if you’ve had the same feeling about me. I always try to remain diplomatic as I ask you more to figure out where you are coming from. Now I see that nearly every letter in your abbreviation is different than mine! I think it is valuable to hear perspectives different than my own, and hope you don’t feel put off by my continual “why?”

The last time I took Myers-Briggs I was just over the border for being ISFJ (border between F/T), but I've always been ISTJ in the past. Personality wise, I am somewhere between being a Defender and Logistician so I think my mixed test results make sense to me. I think in my personal life, I am more of a Defender but given my line of work i have developed more Logistical traits over time as well.

In terms of my wardrobe however, the description from Harmonica's photo for the ISTJ was me to a T --"Practical and all in the same color". All day, every day.

Now I'm on my desktop I was able to see Approprio's link! I don't think I've dressed like either the ESFJ ( which I think I am) and definitely not the ESFP!
Fashiontern, I like you too. I'll just stop answering the "whys" if I get sick of them. Actually my second daughter is INTP which is every letter different than the ESFJ I think I am. We have certainly clashed more over the years than I have with my other two children. We are all good, but I have wondered if that was partly why, just different on everything. My husband is an introvert but came out ISFJ which was otherwise the same as me. Somehow I've managed to get 3 introverted children which I feel is somewhat unfair! I have to rely on my best friend for shopping fun mostly!

It’s just for fun. I don’t read much into it.

Hi Roxanne~ I also took this test, but it was probably about 20 years ago! And I don't really recall what I was, but definately the creative type which I am. Sounds like you are as well. Bravo! Now that I'm 60 however, dressing in all the colors I used to like, all at once, haha doesn't so much work, or I look like a clown. Don't know how old you are but it's very true that with age, we change, we grow, our styles change, and so should it. I find myself now wearing much more a neutral palette, but then with accessories with flair, like handbags, scarves, and perhaps shoes and jewelry sometimes, although I'm a pearl girl. For me, I find a basic wardrobe of neutrals works best now that I'm older. So to get back to your original question, yes, my personality shines through more in my accessories now that I'm older. Not so much in my wardrobe anymore. I love basics. My go to outfit now is a black cashmere sweater, great fitting black trousers, or camel, Tod's Driving Mocs, my Cartier watch, and a fun handbag. Latest is from Aldo, a fun velvet one which I love. I love Aldo's handbags as much as I love Chanel or Hermes~

I did the test and came out ENFP which has been fairly consistent since I am 20. I have changed some of my behaviours but can see my strengths and weaknesses fairly clearly from the description.

Ooh the cognitive preference is much more interesting to me than the personality interpretation! Thanks for sharing the link Approprio, lots to read (and think about) there. I think might cognitively reclassify as I over E, though I'm quite social.

(And, interestingly, my husband who's not particularly social would flip to extroverted for energy orientation.)

Another INTJ checking in, since Approprio commented that she's never seen so many female INTJs in one place. Neither have I, and it makes me smile that such an online forum has so many of us

The pinterest link for INTJ was helpful to me, actually. I've been feeling like my wardrobe has too many options, it makes it hard to decide what to wear. So I'm paring down to my favorites, and if I wear something and it doesn't stay my favorite, out it goes (or at least in to the holding bin). Hoping this streamlines my decision making and makes me even happier with my wardrobe!
