How did you discover YLF?

In light of YLF's 10th birthday, I thought it might be fun to share how we all became acquainted with the blog. I stumbled across the blog in late 2007 when I was googling a dress that my daughter had bought for an awards ceremony. Angie had featured this particular dress, and her post showed up in my internet search. Oh my gosh, did I ever become hooked! I lurked for a year or so, and then I decided to jump in and join the forum. I've been having fun with fashion ever since. I love starting my day reading Angie's blog post with my morning coffee. Although I'm not as active on the forum these days, I still follow along and love seeing what my fellow Fabbers are up to.

In case you are wondering, the pic below is the dress that triggered my discovery. It was featured in her November 26, 2007 blog post titled Sequined and Sparkly Holiday Dresses. Best discovery ever!

I have no idea! I didn't know anybody in the group prior to this, so it must have been via the web. I was interested in minimalism, and minimalist wardrobes (still am!), so perhaps it was by searching for a specific item/issue and landing on the forum? Great question!

I spotted a picture of Angie on the internet somewhere - I think maybe on a link in another fashion blog - and she immediately attracted my attention because of her hair and looks ....yes, I have to admit it. She immediately looked like someone I could relate to . Fast forward to today.

For me it was May 2010. I was 4 month into my kitchen reno so of course perused interior design blogs on a daily basis. One of them mentioned Angie and YLF, I was curious enough to follow the link and of course I was hooked instantly! Honestly it is still a mistery to me how ever I managed to finish the kitchen reno that year when I started to spend that much time on YLF!

I don't remember, but I'm pretty sure I stumbled on it some type of way, as I'm always Googling style tips, etc. The internet is a great resource, and YLF is by far the best resource on it.

I love hearing all your stories. Some of you were already members when I joined (looking at you, Anne!), and I remember when many of you made your debut.

Chuckling! Sveta, I remember your kitchen renovation! I would often spy a hammer or tool box in the corner of one of your pics. Such fun!

I was starting to get into style blogs and through another (non-fashion) online community I was in, I heard about Already Pretty. Sally linked to YLF soon after, and the rest is history.

I completely forgot how I stumbled on to YLF until I just read what Sveta wrote and I'm pretty sure I found YLF through Color Me Happy also. I'm not even sure I read any fashion blogs before that but I was always reading home decorating blogs as we've always got a project or two going on. Thanks for the reminder Sveta. I do remember I spent a lot of time reading the dressing for your body type posts so those are what drew me in. And I was fascinated by Angie's pearls.

I found YLF trying to figure out how to dress my busty self; I must have googled something about "how to...". I remember being absolutely wowed by the level of detail of the advice, written in such a clear manner. I also appreciated that it was very factual -- talking about balance and proportion -- and not at all judgmental.

the 1st time I found YLF I was googling how to wear skinny pants to work ---I was nearing 50 and struggling to find the right business/casual/age appropriate balance....I found this post http://youlookfab.com/2011/08/.....ss-casual/...and it was perfect.....unfortunately, I failed to book mark it, and couldn't find it again.....then about a year later...somehow, I found my way back and discovered the forum.

About two years ago I got into couponing and trying to cut expenses across the board, so I was reading a lot about smart shopping. Plus some of my basic clothes were wearing out, so I think I was googling clothing sales or something. Somehow I ended up finding YLF. My initial impression was that the shopping information was above my budget, but the other information about proportions, trends, body types, ensembles etc. was well-organized and very thoughtful, and I loved Angie's personal style. Then I found the forum and got hooked.

Great question for the 10th anniversary! I was using Google to search for tips on dressing a pear shape, which led me to Angie's tutorial. I joined shortly afterward because I could tell it was a great source of wisdom, and a lot of fun, too. So thanks, Google, and happy anniversary, YLF!

I found a link to YLF through some other fashion blog. I used to read quite a few but had trouble finding content heavy blogs, as opposed to just outfit bloggers. I read quite a bit of the archives and then noticed there was a forum too where there were always great discussions. Then I lurked for a few years before actually posting myself, but here I am.

I was feeling frustrated with my wardrobe in February 2011 and started searching the web for "fashion advice." I stumbled upon YLF and couldn't believe my luck! It was not only exactly what I needed....it was better than anything I'd imagined. Angie's thoughtful and super helpful advice, PLUS a whole community of women to learn from!

I think I lurked for a month or two before joining. It was a pretty easy decision!

I found it through another blog, which I found through another blog, and I don't know how many steps back. YLF wasn't my first blog to follow but it quickly became my FIRST blog to follow...as in checked first, checked most often, never skipped.

The picture that brought me here...I've told this before...was Angie at Fashion Week, sitting, wearing a white shirt and gobs of giant pearls. Struck by lightening, that was it...that's what I want to look like when I grow up. Never mind that I'm 10 years older than Angie, of course I meant grow up-grow into better style. She was everything I wanted...clean and simple, but the necklace turned it whimsical, unique, fun and artistic. Simple but in no way minimal.

Well, we have laughed over the reality that the pearls left rotation not long after that, so what brought me here was fleeting. Never mind that...I stayed for the warmth and wisdom, and the acceptance of everyone's style journey. And recently the pearls have returned...a little at least!

Probably through some random internet search...but then I read the archives and saw many references to Nordstrom, where I used to work, and I saw what a great supportive group this was. I look at this site several times a day!

What a great idea for a thread Debora. I remember discovering fashion blogs (I never realised it was a 'thing' until I came across a few) some time towards the end of 2011. One of the blogs was 'Fab after 40' http://www.fabulousafter40.com/ ...YLF was mentioned on the blogroll and that's how I found it. I lurked for a while and then joined around my birthday in 2012. I think my first ever wiw was of photos from my Greek holiday that year. I'm coming up to 4 years on here now.

I was searching for body type dressing guidelines I think... I pretty much jumped right in after that and started posting quickly. It was fall of 2010.

I can't exactly remember the specifics, including when! I feel like YLF has already been around. I think it was 2012 or 2013, when I started tracking outfits, and I first started searching online for capsule wardrobes. I went through pages and pages of search results and found YLF, which kept popping up when I searched other style stuff.

I lurked awhile, then joined

It is entirely possible I found out about YLF from another style site, such as The Vivienne Files, or Une Femme.

What I do know was, every time I googled a style question, YLF would pop up within 3-4 pages. So there you go - YLF is the all-encompassing style and wardrobe-planning site!

I'd been really unhappy with me in family photos and when I read an article in Huffington Post about "over 40 fashion blogs", I checked them out and started following Not Dead Yet Style because I liked the name of the blog and what Patti was doing. She had a list, "Blogs I Love" which I checked out and found YLF. That was about one year ago. I became a member 10 months ago and have really enjoyed the learning, sharing, supporting, and helping that the forum does. Angie's Posts provide the inspiration, knowledge, and expertise that I need and I still read, learn from, and enjoy Patti's blog, too.

I don't remember exactly. It was summer 2009 and I was at home on summer break from school. Some Google search led me to YLF and I was hooked. I was much more active on the forums in the early days but I continue to read on a daily basis!

I found YLF via my Aussie cousin's sewing blog. I signed up and left a note in the Who's Who thread, Here's an extract from that first post. Must have been 2008.

"I've just turned 40, and my career is changing. My body is changing. I want to continue enjoying fashion, but I need to look a bit more, well, pulled together. I'm trying to find ways to stay true to my remixing, repurposing, chameleon style while being systematic rather than opportunistic about what I add to my collection. My style has changed a lot over the last decade, and now it's time to consolidate.

What drew me to YLF is that, whatever the style, you're asking interesting questions about the contents of my wardrobe. To stay fabulous, I think I need it."

For reasons best known to myself, I continued to read Angie's blog off and on and tried to apply her wisdom, but said nothing noteworthy in the forum until the back end of 2014. By that time, the style was a bit more grown up but the problems were very much the same, only this time with trophy jackets.

It's getting better now. This conversation is a vital part of the process. Thanks YLF, and many happy returns!

I'd been a career woman until getting married and becoming a mom in my late 30s. I needed to remake my style and in fact my entire sense of self, and was searching for a boost. I didn't even know what I was looking for, but when I stumbled upon YLF, I knew I was home.

Like Marianna, I used to be super active on the forum. I even remember Nicole from the "Who's Who" thread on the forum landing page. Now that's ancient history (in Internet time at least!).

Back in 2008, it was a revelation to me to be able to chat "live" on the forum with new friends. I remember discussing the Academy Awards fashion with Shiny and others, as the red carpet was happening, and marveling at what a blast we were having together.

Even though I'm mostly only commenting on the blog these days, I still keep track of you all on the forum and enjoy hearing everyone's style journeys. Thanks for the opportunity to reminisce!

I remember that the first time I commented on the blog was on a post about the relative dressiness of corduroy and denim - I disagreed with Angie. Weird thing to recall all these years, really; maybe it was Angie's strong opinions about corduroy that stuck in my mind! I think I'd been reading for a while at that point - probably saw a link from another blog like Already Pretty.

This was before Angie & Greg created the forum - I think I held off on participating in the forum for a while, because so many online forums become total trainwrecks. Fortunately this has been a shining exception.

I also found Angie through Colour Me Happy. Angie did some styling work for/with Maria, and at the time I'd finished reno'ing a kitchen and was ready to start reno'ng ME. I was hooked pretty much immediately.

Approprio's comment sent me to the archives to find my first forum post. Contrary to what I imagined, it wasn't a charming introduction to myself. 2008 was the very beginning of the skinny jean's comeback. My dilemma? When seen from the side profile, I worried they made me look like a turkey drumstick. haha!

Hi all,
I brought home a pair of JCrew matchsticks, all excited with my YLF-approved purchase, and when I tried them on, I was horrified to see that from my side profile, I looked like a turkey drumstick!

Help - I am 5'3" and usually wear a 6 petite. I have 2 pairs of David Kahn bootcuts and LOVE them but I was trying to avoid paying David Kahn prices for the skinnies. Are there any brands that you've had success with and are flattering?? Thanks everyone!

FUN! A friend who always looks fabulous told me she regularly visits a fashion blog or two for women over 40, so I searched for the same (and included Seattle). YLF popped up and I've been a regular for just over a year.
