Help with sticky skirts and dresses

I'm trying to wear more skirts and dresses; unfortunately they are not lined, and when I add tights to the outfit, the dreaded creep-up of clothing begins. Please help me out with your tips and tricks. Is there a magic undergarment out there that banishes the creep? I have an old slip or two, but they are white/cream and don't do well under black or gray when they (ahem) slip down and peek out. And a slip won't work under one dress where there's a small vent in the back. The solution should be obvious to me, but it's not. Help!

I think I remember reading that spray on static guard helps.

I once tucked a silk scarf all the way around the waistband of my leggings. Not the most elegant solution by any stretch, but it worked...

I use a slip... I"d say go get a black slip with a slit in it. I know a slip seems so old fashioned and frumpy, but I'd rather do that than deal with the dreaded creeping skirt

A black short slip would be the best solution, I think.

Wait ~ they make slips with slits in them? (Can you tell how long it's been since I bought one? I think my mom purchased the one or two I have . . .decades ago.) QM and Bella, thanks for the straightforward advice. It sounds like I have to look for a short black one, then. With a slit. I kinda thought these weren't really made any more. I was also wondering if people used some sort of slippery Spanx wear or something. Then of course there is matching the slip slit to the vent and keeping them that way.

Anna, it sounds like you never have this problem? I'd rather avoid a spray, if I could, plus I think it's more an issue of friction rather than static cling.

Maya, what a creative solution. If that were a Hermes scarf, I think it would be a very elegant solution!

You might want to try both the "skirt - like" and "dress - like" ones to see which one fits you best. I cannot come up with better words, I hope you know what I mean.

The skirt ones did not work out for me, it kept on slidding out. I bought one that actually looks like a little nightgown instead. Really cute!

Great question. I have a couple dresses that do this and I am not a fan of slips, or anything else that adds additional bulk, or twists and turns or taking from the sleekness. I will be watching for answers too:)

I do slips. I buy them short enough that they generally don't interfere with a vent...I have two black and two white, very plain, thin, silky slips, and one nude full slip for wearing under white dresses for extra coverage.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with this problem. So far it's just happened with one sweater dress and another dress that's cotton and unlined. I wore the second one today and as long as I stood still, it looked great. As soon as I started walking, though, the creep began.

Zapotee, I always referred to the skirt ones as half slips and the full dress-like ones as full slips. Thanks for giving me your experience ~ I often have the same problem with half slips. It may be that mine is too long for what I wear it with, plus it's old and probably losing its nice elastic snap.

On that note, I started looking around online ~ preliminary research! I was a bit startled to find that more men than women apparently are wearing slips, if you go by the reviews for one at Macy's:

Neither Macy's nor Nordstrom has many to choose from online, so I guess I will keep looking.

I have a short black half slip, a cream longer half slip, and then a bunch of full slips in varying colors. If you're not squicked out by vintage, I would strongly recommend ebay. Vintage slips are really pretty, and the variety is pretty awesome, too.

I found it hard to find a decent slip that wasn't a wholly ridiculous price. I'm sorry but for $50 I can find something else I actually want to buy. Cheaper ones are all polyester though. I'm also not a fan of bulk and fussiness, but it's tough to avoid unless you give up those looks or pieces that cause the problem in the first place. I wear lots of cotton and unfortunately it seems to be the worst offender, but I can't just stop wearing what I already own, the way I envisioned wearing it when I bought it!

I asked my mom if she could find a slip when she went shopping one day. The sales girls were uniformly clueless as to what a slip even was.

I also wear slips, usually half slips. If they move around, they are probably too big. A couple of years ago they were impossible to find, but I know that Target and Kohls has them in black and beige at least. they come in different lengths. The vintage ones of real silk and beautiful lace are a real find. There are definitely vented ones out there but I usually wear a length shorter than the vent or let a bit of pretty lace show in the vent.

Joy, I think you're right ~ my old half slip is too big and that's why it slips down and/or twists around. Out it goes. Thanks for the tip to look in Target or Kohls. I may get to Target today for another errand, and if so will check out their slip offerings.

Maya, I had sticker shock when I looked online too. But I guess it's a bit like a good bra ~ you need well-made undergarments to support the outfit, and I'm starting to think that should include slips. The worst creep-up offender for me is a new cotton dress I just bought, which is what prompted my post. So there's another confirmation for you that cotton is the culprit. But I love cotton and am not about to give it up.

Dash, thanks for the suggestion to look on eBay. For vintage silk ones it might be worth it, but getting the right fit worries me.

Any other places I should be looking for the elusive slip? Or any other recommendations on brands or styles?

J C Penney has a good selection of slips, in the store AND online. I have three Vanity Fair half slips in varying lengths, one with slits, for my sticky skirts and dresses. I bought beige AND black. With the matching camis just in case I need one.

I'm not sure what your dresses/skirts are like, but I prefer to wear a Flexees under any of mine that ride up. Spanx aren't slippery enough. Flexees are slippery and stay put. The skirt/dress fabric slides right over them and stays down.

I buy a size larger than I might if I was truly seeking 'control'.

love my spanx tights. reversible and the top bit is silky, without cling. there are many versions of spanx some of which cling and some don't.

many of the control top hose also have silky tops and silkier legs for no cling.

I bought a slip at Target not too long ago and it was really reasonable priced. You can get them at any department store as well, you just have to ask because they often don't keep them out on the floor.

You need to attach one of those very tiny safety pins to the hem of your dress/skirt (inside). Make sure you do not go through both layers of fabric as you do not want the pin to "show". I do not know why this works but it does. I have used this trick on all types of bridesmaids gowns (sateen and silks) and it works.

Cookie... you mean that simply a safety pin on the inside of your dress will keep it from sticking to tights or leggings?

Yes Queen Mum. One tiny safety pin, on the bottom inside of the hem, and the static cling is "broken". I did not believe it either but I have seen it work - on fabrics that are not very expensive or "nice". Everyone has a safety pin - just try it.

I'll try it.. but for me static cling is not the problem.. it's the fabric "catching" on the leggings or tights when I walk.

I'd sooner spend the $50 on a slip than resort to shapewear, but that's just me. I find any kind of control top or shapewear impossibly uncomfortable, no matter what the claims, but I can understand why others go that route.

I'm going to try the safety pin idea, but like Kim, I'm not sure if static is the issue. I personally haven't had luck with the static sprays because they dry up almost instantly and lose effect. I have also tried rubbing the inside of the skirt and leggings with a dryer sheet, but that didn't work either. I think the grain or slip of the fabric is key.

I found a pair of "slip shorts" at UO--a bit like a regular slip but a pair of shorts rather than a skirt. I bought them for modesty purposes rather than to prevent cling, but I might try using them that way in the future.

i'd rather do shapewear than a slip! when i wear a slip, it invariable winds up at my waist!

not the whole slip! i get slip creep and wind up with a polyester tube around my midsection.

maybe it's the way i walk?

Maya, I too, loathe shapewear. It's too confining and doesn't breathe!
Cookie, the safety pin idea makes total sense; I'm going to try it.
