Marianna- I'm guessing they are cross dressers based on some of the comments and user names.

I would guess the same as Kim. Crossdressers or transsexuals. That said, I'm surprised to see there are more crossdressers/transsexuals than women leaving reviews.

Ah, okay! I considered that but thought there had to be a less obvious answer. I still think it's super odd that all the reviews are from men. I thought it was a system glitch or something at first.

Oh, I just looked at the user names! Now it makes sense.

That sent me back to the Macy's links! Only one male review of the shapewear though. And I would think shapewear would be more useful. . .

Slips seem more abundant in lower-end department stores. Think Sears: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/s_1.....%26+Liners

I can't think of any reason why that would be except that -- no offense to anyone -- those tend to be the places where grandmothers shop, and I think older ladies think slips are more necessary than younger ladies do. Kind of like their devotion to pantyhose...

Sara- you are a scream!
April- I'm sure you are right about that.

Safety pin does not work - I've tried it six ways to Sunday and my silk dresses still get static cling when I wear tights/leggings, even with a slip!

Barbara, thanks for suggesting JC Penney’s and a brand to look for there.

BJ and Sara, I’m glad to hear that some shapewear can work. I’ll definitely check out Flexees and Spanx tights. Those would solve the problem of half slips twisting and riding up and down. They sound so much easier to use, frankly.

Cookie, using a safety pin actually makes sense. Touching metal is supposed to help release the energy in static, so I could see how a safety pin could work. As Kim said though, I think my problem is caused by friction rather than static cling. But I’m going to try the pin in some other situations.

Maya, the UO shorts sound like a much more updated ~ dare I say almost cool ~ version of a slip.

Since my errand runs took me to Target this morning, I searched around for slips and found a small section there. I picked up a short black slip for $9 to try out. (QM, you’re right ~ very reasonably priced!) Since I plan to wear more dresses this F/W with leggings and tights, I may need another one or two underlayers to ease the friction problem, so I will be checking out all these other options.

Marianna ~ yes, sorry for the confusion, I also understood the male reviewers were most likely crossdressers. I seem to come across a lot more male reviews for heeled boots and now slips! Not sure what that says about my evolving style . . .

Jenava, thanks for the report on safety pins. Too bad they didn’t help.

My husband says the metal thing only works if it's grounded (electrician). I.e. touch your hairbrush to your metal faucet b/c the plumbing grounds and it will remove static electricity from you hairbrush. But the safety pin idea doesn't because the pin doesn't touch the ground. I suppose you could invent one of those little things like you see on some cars/buses that drags on the ground but for skirts...LOL...(-:

I've found that the fabric content of the dress, tights, and slip can make all the difference. Poly/rayon ponte knit dress with microfiber tights, usually okay; cotton or viscose jersey dresses with nylon-spandex tights, not so much. Most of the less-expensive slips are a nylon or acetate fabric, which I don't like the feel of, and sometimes they don't seem to do the job anyway.

My best success with slips, half-slips, and split slips has been the silk ones from Wintersilks. If you can get them on sale they're not so bad, and they don't feel like they add another layer. I especially like the split style for summertime.

Jenava, your DH is right ~ my engineer DH weighed in on this too, saying the metal needs to be grounded to dissipate the static. Now I have a picture in my head of a thin line dragging on the ground from a dress.

Tracy, that makes sense about the fabric. I'm going to look at the fabric content of the slip I got yesterday. Those Wondersilks look great! Do you know if they're sold in stores or just online?

I've been an avid reader of YLF for some time, but haven't posted... this has been an interesting thread. As a 50 something, I think I do okay in the fashion department. This forum is a great help! The whole idea slip as granny attire is really rather silly. I do wear slips when my dresses are see through or clingy... they are short, don't peek out, they fit well and don't add bulkiness. I've seen rather enough of young ladies (and some not so young!) with dresses and skirts stuck in their rear ends or with a clear view of their panties... how is it "granny" to not want that visual? And shapewear is NOT granny? Age gives you a little perspective on how fashions come and go, some of it makes sense, some doesn't. Just doesn't seem to make a lot of sense to forgo undergarments that make your clothes look better on you... shop around! You can find slips that are comfortable and well fitting and can do wonders for the way a skirt or dress falls over your body.

Just wanted to add that I find a full slip or cami and half slip can be valuable for travel as an added layer for warmth if needed and as a gown to sleep in that takes up almost no room. They can be hand washed, wrapped in a towel to remove moisture and dry quickly especially if you use the hairdryer in an emergency. I have a black full one that can be worn under a LBD that usually is also packed for most any trip.

eds, welcome to the forum and thanks for your post! You make some good points. Certainly now that I'm in my 40s I have found shapewear to be my friend but it took me a while to see the light. I mentioned this before, but I have come to the realization that slips ~ and shapewear ~ are like bras and panties; good undergarments help clothes fit better. Nothing granny-like about that.

Joy, I read the same thing in some online reviews for full slips ~ that the women were also using them for sleepwear during travel. Great idea!

I am so bummed that the Wintersilks I am interested in seem to be OOS in my size. I wonder how often they restock?

I like to wear a chemise. It's usually sold as sleepwear but works really well as a slip. It doesn't move around like a half slip does. I prefer silk but have a couple made from man-made fibers too.
