Help with Size/Hem/PPL (UPDATE in comments)

I just got these Eileen Fisher widelegs and would love your input since this is a new silhouette to me.

Are these the right size? They’re very voluminous, but I think I can pull that off so long as this is how they’re supposed to fit. The waist stays up and the rear doesn’t sag, but I could probably physically fit in a size down as well.

Also, do they need hemming? Right now, they fall 1-2” above my ankle bone.

ETA: yes, there's an empty bookshelf in the middle of my entryway. We're in flux.

I like the length, but I make no claims to be a pant length pedant.

I agree that you can pull off the volume for sure. I would kind of like to see them a size down, to compare. I've had the experience with Eileen Fisher before where I put on one size and thought, "I think this seems ok?" and then trying a size down and going, "Ohhhh, that's how it's supposed to be." So maybe I'm projecting from my experience...I don't think they look bad but sometimes it's hard to figure out the ideal fit without a little titration.

I like them as is.....is the fabric knit or woven?

If knit stretch I would tend to size down - if woven I think these are right. I would wear and consider the length after washing - they probably won't shrink up being a quality brand.

I like the length as is - they look intentional but at the nice point of the ankle - a shade shorter than the model.

Totally agree with Angie. And I think I'm similar-ish to your shape/size, and enjoy wide legs very much. I'd be very pleased if a pair fit me like these fit you!

I'd say if they are a bit lose at the waistline, try the next size down. Did you get them online? I hope there is no hustle with return policy.

Wow! These are great!
The fit looks good to my eye, I like that they are a bit flowy, but it’s difficult to say without seeing the smaller size. The length looks perfect.

SarahD8 and Wise Shopper, if I were in a store, I'd certainly try on this size and one down, but I ordered online, so it's a bit of a pain to compare and contrast. If I can get away with not doing it, I'd rather not The waist fits fine, but it's elastic, so a size down would fit too. I often have to alter EF waists to get a good fit at the thigh, but that's obviously not an issue with these. There's no rush on the return policy, but I have quite a bit of travel coming up (we're establishing an apartment in a different state) and would prefer to make a decision quickly.

binkle, I love the drama of widelegs...and the ankle length sure makes them more practical!

Sal, they are knit, but it's a viscose/nylon crepe rather than a softer jersey-type. I don't think they'll be prone to stretching/sagging. And yes, I'm happy that they're a bit shorter on me than the model.

So...looking at this last photo, I went ahead and ordered them a size down, just to compare. I still suspect this is right, but I'll always wonder if I don't try.

Oooh, yes! You look great. I especially love the look with the striped top and chucks! I’ve been eyeing those and wondered how wide the leg actually is. I would definitely have to hem but I’m used to that. Now you might not miss your rust linen pieces so much when you have to put them away for winter.

I think they look fabulous on you! I prefer the ones with a bit of leg showing but they all work. You are so out of place in front of an empty bookcase though - the perfect symbol of the flux state you are in.

I think they’re great. I am so glad that this wide leg culottes thing is popular now as I feel there’s a lot of leeway with fit and length, so it’s easier to buy than something more stringent.

You wear those well! I think this length is better on you than wide leg culottes would be. The color is great for you too. These will be great if you want to do “winter” in a warm climate.

Ordering from places where shipping and returns are included in the price, I’ve often gotten a couple sizes right off the bat when I wasn’t sure, because I stretching that decision over the time it takes for another pair to arrive is too much hassle for me.

What is your son doing during this So Cal adventure, if you don’t mind my asking?

Great color, and you got the top length down pat! Can't hurt to try a size down for comparison, especially if they feel too loose. The length may be shorter too sizing down.

What a wonderful bunch of comments to wake up to! I quite liked the widelegs before, but I feel even more confident about them now.

Knitting Gene, they are definitely wider than they look in the catalog pic, but I'm not bothered by that at all.

shevia, don't worry, my books are still all there, but I put a worktable in that room and it's not good for photos anymore. That shelf came out of my son's room, so he could make room for a chair and mini fridge. I think he's emulating his friends who are already in college!

Jessikams, widelegs are definitely more forgiving for those of us who are hourglass- and pear-shaped!

karen13, the fabric will probably make them three-season pants, whether here or in CA. I think they're a bit too thick for high summer.

Fashintern, I've done that too, with ordering multiple sizes, especially if I'm between sizes on the size chart. I was firmly in one size on the chart for these, though, and have worn the brand before. As for kiddo, his senior year is going ahead as planned, and he'll be in college once the move is permanent.

suntiger, the deciding factor for trying another size was the realization that I'm a bit bloated this week, so they fit differently on a more normal day.
