ETA how I wore it - Help: Outfits with a chunky cream cardi?

Hi ladies,

After being inspired by Style Fan's recent find of a chunky cream irish knit cardigan, I had been on the lookout for one and finally found the perfect one at the thrift store: 100% merino wool, made in Ireland, the most delicious shade of cream, and cable knit. It is hip-length and a tailored fit, and thick - in between a cardi and a sweater-coat.

The trouble is - I don't know how to wear it! I could pair it with a pair of light wash high waisted jeans - but that feels too casual.

For work, I thought about wearing it with a leather skirt - but that feels too hard edged. It has a folksy vibe that I'd like to neutralize.

Style Fan wore hers with a pair of delicious chestnut chinos - which would be great, but alas, I don't have a pair. I have my burgundy and olive Lulu OTFs but not sure that would work...

any suggestions on some more fashion-forward outfits?

ETA I decided to just bite the bullet abs wear it to brunch today...I tried to tone down the traditional vibe with a graphic tee and high tops. Does it work?

its a pretty conservative sweater, but i think it would work with any of the pants that you wore here...sub out this sweater for the fair isle, and your good to go. i think it would work with the pants in the other outfits, but you'll need to experiment with what you want to wear under the sweater, and if you want to wear it open or closed. and i would try it with the leather skirt, i think the play between the two would be great

I don't know what you may have in your wardrobe already, but some suggestions could be:
- black flare trousers? Black ankle pants and a fun shoe?
- A voloumnious skirt, volume on volume.
- Jeggings/skinnies and chunky sneakers or boots.
- Worn over an overall or dungarees?

Hmm, I really love the idea of the leather skirt? This sounds like an outfit lab!!!

I haven't had an Aran knit since high school, my Irish mom used to hook us up This one is just gorgeous. Did you know the patterns on them all have special meanings, meant to bless the fishermen who traditionally wore them out to sea? #funfacts

What about your reddish cropped pants? Or, don't you have a pair of high-waisted pants with the buttons on the front pockets? Similar to these?

How about white jeans, or light camel pants, for a light, all-neutral look.

I have two chunky cream cardigans, each with opposite vibe. One is kind of 90s grunge rock, and the other one is Miss Marple from Agatha Christie. I prefer to play them both more hard edge than sweet.

Oh, this reminds a lot of a cardi I had many years ago, that I much loved. I often wore it with a a straight midi skirt and dressy pumps.

When I have a hard to style item I look at Net-a-Porter for styling suggestions. I found these three looks for chunky knits in neutral colours (there were lots more on site). I thought these looks were a bit more interesting and dressy than blue denim.

@Bijou what a brilliant idea to look at Net a Porter! I looked on Pinterest and only found 20 somethings in cropped sweaters and faded jeans. Your inspo photos are much more up my alley.

What a great find, Roxanna! I also found mine at a consignment shop. Bijou and Lisap suggested Net-a-porter in another thread and I have been hooked by that site. There are lots of great possibilities there.
I think Irish fisher sweaters are going to be trending. I see them in all the consignment stores in Montreal on St. Laurent and Style Bee a blogger I follow from Guelph had one that she styled last year.
I like the way you styled yours with the burgundy pants. White jeans and leather pants sound great.
I wore mine with my Jesse Kamm pants, jeans and black jeans.

Bijou did a great job sourcing inspo pictures. You can go with the casual vibe and do the jeans and sneakers thing, but I think juxtaposing it with luxe items would be more your style! The sweater brings the TEXTURE - big time! A leather pant or skirt sounds like a perfect match and would bring the SHINE. I like Angie’s idea of a full crop. The short boxy silhouette of your sweater is similar to the jean jacket and moto silhouettes, and these work really well with fuller bottoms (skirt or pants). You might try it layered it over a silky dress as well.

Agree with Runcarla's advice to treat it like a moto, and I like Angie's suggestion of pairing it with wide crops too. Also:

-With your snake-print pants
-With tailored wool pants, a silk blouse, and pin some bling on the collar. Like Style Fan says, luxe it up!
-With your vintage silk skirt (or is it culottes?) that your mom thrifted for you, and a sleek black turtleneck.
-With your vintage silk blouse (partner to the skirt), jeans, and metallic footwear.

I wouldn't wear the above elements as a two-piece dress with the cardi though...I think that wouldn't be enough juxtaposition. But please prove me wrong!

Why not with the leather skirt? I think that would be fab! Again, bling on the collar to tie it all together.

I think oxfords will serve you really well as footwear with many outfits. They'll bridge the classic/modern and casual/dressy elements nicely.

It's interesting how all the inspirational outfits have very dressy shoes/boots in the pics - maybe it's one of the key things that makes it work.

Oh my GOSH I am so loving these options! you guys are such geniuses!

so far I am going to try:
Cable cardigan zipped up with cropped leather pants and high heeled suede boots
Cable cardigan zipped up with grey flowy pleated midi skirt, thick black belt, black tights and high heeled black booted to add some edge
cable cardigan zipped up with cropped check trousers, black suede boots and clack calfskin belt

@SarahD8 what AWESOME suggestions!! I never even thought about the snakeskin pants. And also with the silk culottes with a chunkier cognac boot. I will have to devote some time to trying on your combos

Bijou that's a fab idea: definitely will remember it. (And such a lightbulb, too, since of course Angie often pulls inspo images from Net a Porter!) I agree with others: hard-edged pants would look great in combo with the soft traditionality of the sweater. If you don't like zipping, then wear a non-contrasting tee underneath.

Looks great - love those long burgundy trousers with it (and with anything probably). I would also try it zipped up as a top with a leather or patterned skirt (could work the same over a dress). And what everyone else suggested!
