Help for bold necklace - YouLookFab Forum

Last year my husband was shortcutting through Nordstrom on his way to the Apple store when a display at Fashion Jewelry caught his eye. With the help of a person he described as a Little Old Lady, he picked out a Kate Spade necklace and brought it home as a surprise for me. Usually he doesn't venture into the jewelry department unless I'm along.

This necklace is nothing like anything I usually wear, and I might have taken it back. It reminded me, however, of the very first piece of jewelry I bought myself when I was 12. (That was a single pendant.) So I kept it, but I've only worn it 2-3 times, and only with the Elie Tahari top in the photo. (I'm not a big fan of florals either and don't wear this top often, although I like it.)

I see that big dramatic necklaces are popular in stores and I've seen some of you wearing them. I'd like to wear this more, but feel like it overwhelms me. Any help or suggestions would be welcome.

The last photo is a better view of the necklace modeled by Mme. Maven and a BR tee shirt. I think low contrast is better for me. Ideas? Or should I just keep it in its box?

I love it. I have a similar one from Banana Republic. I like it with #3. I would also try it outside of a shirt collar of a solid colored button front shirt, if it is extentable to the right length. The shirt collar would cover up some of it and just leave the front on display. That might give you less of the feeling of being overwhelmed, but it doesn't look overwhelming to me.

I love it! It looks so pretty with both shirts! I don't think it looks overwhelming at all! Could you tuck it inside a shirt if you don't want to display the whole necklace?

I absolutely LOVE that necklace (LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE); If you want to keep it farther from your face, you can always add a few little links at the back to extend the necklace.

I think it's so beautiful with the neckline in #3; and have you tried wearing it over your button down top?

Thanks all of you. You have given me some ideas, and come to think of it, thanks to NAS I have some new clothes. I think the necklace will work well with the VC tube skirt in the black/white animal print, and possibly a black tunic shirt I've only worn a few times. I like the idea of wearing it with a collared shirt so the whole thing doesn't show. It is so different than what I usually wear that I haven't been too adventurous.

If you feel it is overwhelming (and I don't, love the necklace and your hubs for thinking of you ) perhaps you should wear a top in a single colour, no patterns?

Then it would stand alone but be subtle, just a thought

I think it is very flattering to your hair, features, and complexion! Hubby did good! The fabbers have given you a ton of great suggestions. I think it's just time to step out and be brave!

It's not overwhelming at all! I would definitely try it with solids. I'd try the darkest solid you can wear, for contrast, and so with solid off- white or whatever version of beige you might wear, for a tonal all- white look. I think that would look very elegant. Or stripes or dots-- contrast the round and textural flowers with something crisper rather than being all flowery and soft.

I love the necklace and would wear it with tops similar to #3. The top should be somewhat plain, as the necklace needs to be the star of the show.

Gorgeous necklace! It's big and bold but not overwhelming on you. I like it styled as is, and also the idea to wear a button down shirt and this layered over the collar of it.

Would look fab with a plain dress. J. Crew features a lot of these necklaces so you might get inspiration there.

Love it as styled on Mme. Maven. I don't find it overwhelming, although the necklace AND the floral floaty top don't seem as much your style as I've seen it in your recent posts. I think the ideas others have put forward are excellent, and will help you see the necklace in a new, very flattering light!

The necklace is adorable. It's not my favorite with the top in #1 I think the florals compete. (I do love the colors and print in that blouse though!) I think you have the right idea in #3 the dots of the sweater are echoed in the necklace and the pairing allows the necklace to be the star of the show. A white bottom would be a crisp finish with possibly some muted gold metallic flats or wedge. DH has great taste.

It can be really fun to wear something like your gift with an otherwise casual outfit, too (jeans or shorts + T). That tends to get attention, so be ready.

ps I went from wearing almost no jewelry to small jewelry to much bolder stuff...I bet once you start wearing it a bit more it'll either become business-as-usual. Or you'll decide you're just a smaller-scale jewelry person, and there's no shame in that!

This would be fabulous with a VC tube skirt (and I do not say this just because I'm on a VC tube skirt kick!). It's the right vibe. And it would be perfect with an Anthropolgie look (hello Lyn!). And things with banded waists...

Another big fan of this necklace. I have a similar one from Anthro that I like to wear with simple vee neck white tshirt, or a gold linen sweater or like others have suggested over a white button down or plain shell.
