UPDATE on Page 2: Have I Gone Off the Deep End?

I stumbled on this brand--Kantha Bae--on Instagram, and I can't stop scrolling through all the beautiful textiles. I think I want a piece, maybe a muumuu or a duster (my favorite of the ones currently available is below).

What has me questioning is...all my current florals, shown in Finds, are less "chaotic" than what's going on with the Kantha Bae pieces, if that makes sense. I pattern-mix with them, but there's no pattern mixing happening on the garments themselves. The fact that I can choose how Bohemian to go with them makes them more versatile. Maybe I'd be better off with something like the Peruvian Connection duster in photo 2?

I guess what I'm saying is that I'm feeling a pull towards MORE maximalism on my maximalist days, but I also have plenty of minimalist days, so how on earth do I keep my closet in balance? Do you think I should just let loose and enjoy the ride?

Fun maximal style! I can see you wearing some duster or other flow-y piece when you wish to go for it. Why not try something from that brand for the joy and exuberance ? You may chose something less "loud" or go all the way .

On a less emotional note, Jenn.....

Most people have a minimal and maximal component to their styles, which is why I see each extreme on one end of a continuum. That way we can slide along the scale and enjoy a smaller or larger component of minimalism or maximalism depending on our sartorial preferences and MOOD. This can change as we evolve our styles over time.

Soooo, listen to your feelings and run with it! These are still a VERY complementary items for your wardrobe and style

You can’t go wrong with either, but I have to say, the print and colours in the PC one are absolutely stunning and quite different from anything else in your wardrobe. Maybe you need a couple of new pieces??

I'm definitely on board for the enjoy the ride philosophy. I realize pic #2 the green robe item is an example but I'm leery of clothes that look too much like actual bathrobes/dressing gowns, which is kind of what you get with florid patterns inside a very tailored format.

Your style evolves naturally, and if you're feeling pulled to these, there's a reason. I have looked at that sight, but most of their stuff is a little too much for me. Ido like the silk shrugs, though.

Enjoy the ride! I kept tight control of my wardrobe for awhile, only allowing grey or blue. But then I wanted to olive and pink. So I let them in, and it wasn’t the end of the world.

ETA: I love the green coat!

Ok… btw… so… I used to call LA fashion ‘clown fashion,’ upon landing in LA… ahem. Ok, but the thing is, the sun is STRONG in LA. Strong colour and pattern doesn’t read as strong tbh.

So, and i say this as someone who is generally pattern adverse, yes the 1st example has many patterns, but the proportions and the colors are so well balanced that it doesn’t feel over the top. I can totally see that duster over one of your all black outfits

I can see you wearing the pattern-mixed duster. I like the style of it as well as the patterns and colors for you. To me it is safely far from bathrobe territory stylewise (to add to Vildy's comment). I also think this pattern mix could indeed be mixed with other patterns, so I don't see it as less versatile, per se, than a one-pattern duster.

That duster in #1 is gorgeous! I think it could end up being very versatile. Some people can throw pieces like that on and look fantastic. You are one of them.

Absolutely go for the maximal! I think it’s a spring thing, and if you don’t do it for the S/S season, then you are unlikely to shop the look for fall - when your mind turns towards autumn and a subdued and less exuberant expression.

FWIW, I’m hemming and hawing over the shirt below, and definitely feeling like my closet needs some colour and some pattern!

I definitely like the first one better for you. I am with Vildy and find the second one rather bathrobe-like.
I get bored without some maximalist items.

Wellll, I was thinking the 2d pic, worn open, would be less so but now it looks like a fuzzy warm robe you'd wear when feeling low, chilled, sick.

I also really love the Kantha piece and agree with those who said the pattern mix is so balanced that it would still play well with other patterns if you wanted it to. I could see it working so well over any of your all black looks.

The dusters are gorgeous but I’m biased — I love the look. The first pic looks loose and flowy, the second more tailored. Do you want something that floats and moves or is fitted and sleek?

I think these are gorgeous Jenn and could see both working. I actually find the more colours the easier- the skirt below works with black navy white blush denim metallic and even coral- the dress I would only wear with tan metallic and denim. I love them both though.

As Black and Tan are your main neutrals I think you would have supporting acts for either of these.

There's no doubt that you wear maximal pieces very well. To me, the Kantha Bae is way at the far end of the boho spectrum, while your current pieces, and the Peruvian piece seem more....sophisticated? I'm not finding the right word! In any case, it is certainly speaking to you - maybe it is the wilder of wildcards for summer!

I really like that first duster for you. There is something in the mix of textures that might be appealing. I don't think you've gone off the deep end. You have the grounding pieces in your closet as well.

Agree with others that, so long as you have tonally similar colours to wear underneath, it shouldn't look too 'out there'. You could try it with a brown dress underneath to add some 'structure' by showing some skin. Or if all else fails, jeans are a failsafe for this style!

If you're worried about the 'bathrobe' look, do you wear belts? I sometimes find switching out the self fabric one for an 'actual' belt can help elevate the look - even if your 'actual' belt is really just a sash in a contrasting solid (e.g. dark brown), it's usually still enough to ground the robe. Give it a try
