Haircut this afternoon - ETA Pic at the end!

I decided I really needed a haircut (see here http://youlookfab.com/welookfa.....a-bit-lost) and I just called the place I had my last cut done. I thought about going over the shoulders this time, I did like the pic Julie linked to last time http://www.ukhairdressers.com/.....styl1=Milk. But now I don't have the same stylist I did last time, so I'm not quite sure if I should do it. The one that cut my hair then is on holiday for the next two weeks and I want my hair cut before my sister's confirmation. Should I go for it all the same? And how would you describe this cut? I tried to print it out, but my printer doesn't do it in a good quality.

I am no good at describing curly hair cuts, but if you do it - well it's gorgeous! Could you show the pic on your phone maybe?

I'm really bad at describing hairstyles as well, Astrid, sorry. I really love the idea of this shorter do for you. If at all possible, I would show the other stylist the photo and chat a bit about exactly what you want before making the decision to go for it (because it's a different stylist than last time).

I was thinking of something along those lines for you Astrid. I think somewhere between jaw and where your neck hits your shoulder line and with a few layers will suit you, Aida's is shorter and Ingunn's is longer but they both have curly /wavy hair a little like yourself. I was going to suggest maybe showing the pic on your phone too.

Thanks Hil! Great idea about showing the picture on the phone, I hadn't thought of that. I only got myself a smartphone not so long ago and I didn't think of using it like that. I saved the pic already.

Thanks Diane! Yes, I think the length you describes sounds good. And some layers and a few shorter strands in front around the face. I definitely need the layers so I don't end up with pyramid hair.

Yes, a few shorter pieces around the face frames it nicely. BTW I still don't own a smartphone, I need dragging kicking and screaming into the 21st century!

I think I was the last person in my circle of friends who didn't have one! But I started to have issues with my old one (it was about five years old) and finally decided to buy a smartphone. I like it so far, although I'm not quite sure I really NEED it.

I think you've got a great curly hair picture there. You have the same kind of hair and face as the model. The cut looks like it is long enough to style up, if you ever want to or do that kind of styling, and yet it is short enough to really enhance/ activate the curl when you let it air dry.

When talking to the hairdresser, stress that you hair shrinks a lot when it curls ( for you it is probably as much as 30%). It looks to me like the cut is to or slightly below the shoulders, and the layers are from the cheekbones down on the lower half to 1/3. When dry, everything shrinks up to just brush your shoulders, and the curls will frame your face.

I'm back and a lot of hair is gone! I like that it's shorter, but I don't like the cut. I showed her the picture and told her what I wanted, but I she did something different. I didn't realize it while she was cutting it and it looked alright when she blowdried it, so I left. I know that my hair always looks different when I wash it on my own, so I did that when I came home. My hair isn't dry yet, but I can already tell that it doesn't look good. She left the underlayers and back quite long and cut the upper layers quite short. It just looks strange... Argh, this is not good. And I suspect that I'll have to go way shorter than I wanted to fix this! I'm going to post pics when the hair is dry, maybe you have an idea what I could do.

Okay, I just skyped with my mum and she had a good laugh. I'm really not sure I want to post pics. I think the only way to fix this without getting a pixie (don't want that!) is to go for a very short inverted bob. At least my hair grows fast, so it will be a longer bob in no time. I'm going to look some places up where I could go tomorrow to fix this. All the people from the Milano excursion meet up tomorrow evening and I don't want to go there looking like this.

Sorry to hear that you are not happy with it. Can you try styling it in a few different ways while you wait for some growth?

Oh, no. I went through that phase in January (two days before my birthday...). So much for looking perfect on the 'day of the year'.

It sounds like you will have to cut it shorter. All I can say is my hair was barely hitting my ears when I cut it in January, and now it's way past my jaw.

Thanks Glory. And no, I don't think I can do anything with it as it is. I'd much prefer to loose some more length and then have a good cut that can grow out to leaving it as it is.

Thanks Irene. Yes, I remember when you got your haircut fixed! I've found a hairdresser that does cut & go not too far away from me. I'm going to be there at opening time tomorrow and have this fixed before I go to work. Luckily I have somewhat flexible work hours. Then I can go to the meet up directly after work just like I had planned.

Oh! dear! Been there with my curly hair, on my 50 th birthday and when I was due for 2 ID pictures that would have to last for 5 years. NOT good for the ego!

My regular hairdresser, who had been so good before must have been having a bad day. Cut the top layers too short, after I had been growing out a short cut to long shoulder length layers. Almost a mullet!

I did exactly what you are planning, a short inverted bob, and started all over again. But, I've still got the bad ID photos as a reminder.

I guess this could be a time for a really drastic but still fun new style if you can find someone who can fix it. Looking for the bright side in this of course. Fingers crossed for you!

I feel for you. My last cut was a complete disaster and I am sure I now am sporting a mullet. I am wondering if you will change hair stylists? I think I have to as it is the second time in the past 3 or so years I have had this mullet issue. The first time I went back but not this time. Now I am sporting a pony tail.

Oh no Astrid - are you sure it's as bad as you think? Obviously you want to go somewhere else to have it changed but I would still let the stylist know you are not happy with the cut and that this was not what you had discussed.

Aw Astrid that's too bad! Curly hair can be such a pain to get a good cut for (when I find a stylist that can work with my hair, boy do I hold onto them for dear life). I'd be curious to see the cut too, your inspiration photo cut would've looked fab for you. The more dramatic shorter layers seems more common when a stylist is more used to straight hair, BUT as you know it really only works with a much shorter cut like mine; with the longer cut it unfortunately makes the volume really wonky. If an inverted bob is an option to "solve" this cut, at least it's a very stylish option (she said not-so-biased as a gal with an inverted bob ).

Thanks Runcarla. I know bad ID pics, the one on my driver's license looks horrible and I won't get a new one unless I loose it. And yes, it has some mullet going on....

Thanks Glory. At least you can do a ponytail, mine's too short now. I'm definitely going to change stylist, I've been there only two times anyway. Or I'm going back to only getting my hair cut when I'm at my parents' home.

Thanks Aida. I think you're right and she simply didn't know what to do with my hair. I think the inverted bob would be the best solution to keep most of the length, but I'm going to ask them what they think about it.

Thanks Angie! I'm not unhappy that it'll be so short in the end, I'm more unhappy with the bad cut. But you're right of course!

Thanks, Diane! Here's a quick picture taken with my phone. It's still a mess, but it's much better now. I had the longest layer taken up (it was down to my shoulders before!), the back is really short now. I still have short strands randomly sticking out somewhere, but it's not so bad because the overall look is choppy. I think I'm going to slowly adjust the longest layer with the next cuts until the short strands have a good length again.
