Hair thoughts?

I'm getting my hair cut next week and wonder if anybody has a fresh idea for me. I've been wearing it with this asymmetrical fringe for several years (since 2011) and I'm getting a bit tired of it. Having said that, on the positive side, it's a super easy style for me and I do like it. I have varied it a bit by changing the length and sometimes (rarely) switching the part to the other side. It has been more or less textured at various times, but it does require texturizing because my hair is super thick.

Angie suggested a pink streak last winter but I didn't go for it. I don't think I want to do that this year, either.

I want to keep it short. But I'm feeling bereft of ideas. So if you have an image you like, please post!

No ideas, but I am getting restless about my hair too. I think what I would like is a hairpiece that I can attach on top to match my hair. The look would be like long hair put up. However, I don't know where to even begin to look for one. I do not want to color or change the length.

Have you thought about playing with color otherwise? Or are you only thinking about the cut?

I am growing mine out a bit, on recommendation from my new stylist.
I could see you with a very short angled bob, with waves (your hair looks like it has natural waves). Still very short in the back. I don't have a photo but could look for one later.

Grow it out in front, and go more asymmetrical. You need length for the change, which will take a while. Keep the back and one side very short. And if your hair is wavy, encourage the wave in front only after you have some length.

Joy, I think we should go looking for hair pieces together. Solves the grow-out woes.

Vivian, I could play with colour. But don't want a drastic colour change. I like red, but it fades too fast on me. Grey, I will get to, soon enough.

I have had a short fringe -- not as short as Astrid's since I was about her age -- but quite short. I have a super high forehead so it is not my best look.

Sharan, I haven't had a short bob for a long time, and admittedly, cutting techniques may have changed, but back then it looked awful on me and was a real pain to style. Hair was always falling in my eyes and mouth, yuck. I pretty much had to blow dry or it looked terrible, and it really emphasized the length of my face (even with a side part fringe, which softens things a bit.) Also, I have a low hairline in back so a short bob means a wedge for me. Ugh.

(How's that for a negative response? Gee, I am sorry!! I would truly look seriously if someone could show me a version that would work on me, but I think a bob is a very dark horse here.)

Angie, if you have visuals, that would be great. My stylist is good if she sees the direction of change.

My hair does have some natural wave by mainly in the form of a cowlick! Actually, if it is layered a lot, it waves some -- if not, it's too heavy and pulls itself down -- even at a short length.

I like dramatic, too -- but some of that hair will get in your eyes big time!

Still, I like the idea.

My daughter's friend actually has hers a bit like this and it looks super on her. Her face is a very different shape from mine -- very round.

Actually Suz, I thought exactly the same thing about these styles of fringes, and so far with the right product and textured cut I am VERY comfortable. The fringe has to be long enough to stay out of your face. Trust me - it does. I have zero tolerance for that type of thing. The tricky bit is getting through the in-between stages. I've been growing my front since March and will be there by the end of the year. It has been SO worth it.

FWIW, I am going to vote against going shorter.

First off, I haven't seen you with a haircut that didn't suit you since you cut it all off. I think you can go back to any of those versions and it will be fine. Second, I can't see you with something like the cut Angie suggested. I'm sorry, but that's how it is. It might be the more "modern" cut, but if I try to imagine it on you I draw a blank. I don't have other suggestions though, so that's probably not very helpful.

I forgot to mention, Suz, that the visuals I provided are merely a starting point, and serve as inspiration to get those creative juices going.

I especially chose dramatic looks because you're after quite a big change for Winter. You can't do that much about what you have to wear to survive a severe Canadian Winter - but you CAN change your hair. You're after as much of a dramatic change as when you first cut your hair off in 2011. Hope that makes sense.

Watching with interest because I went shorter (again) about 4 years ago and so wonder, what's next? Am I to be in a cycle of growing out so that every few years I can get a kick by going short again?
Asymmetry would look good for sure. I am so leery of maintenance, and of hair hanging alongside my face and then blowing about. But I have very fine thin hair.
Another approach, which is the opposite of symmetry, I guess, is to do full bangs and then very short sides and back.

Suz, I'm very much liking pic 3 in the second set Angie posted. It would work so well for you without being a drastic change. The more feathery bangs would provide a new look while still letting you keep your fringe (I have a high forehead too so know where you're coming from). The difference is that cut gives you more of a full across bang than your current sideswept ones, and the slightly tousled look is still polished, just lighter and more gamine.

One thing I would not change about your hair is its colour. It's absolutely marvellous on you.

ETA forgot to also say that the slightly longer bangs in that look will not flop in your face as they are less heavy and more feathered.

I wanted to share the picture I'm currently obsessed with - but , believe it or not, I cannot figure out how to copy and paste without my mouse. I'm using my laptop and with a track pad = oh never mind. What are the apple commands for cut and paste?? The newest one on my pinterest board is Kaley Cuoco's hair which is super cute. I am also completely obsessed with Sharon Stones's hair in the Sept Harper's Bazaar (and her body - OH MY GOD!). I never know what to do with my hair either. I've had it pretty short all summer and I thought I was going to let it grow into this Kaley whoever haircut for winter, but i just cut it again today. I'm so fickle .

I know exactly how you feel. I basically have what Angie suggested as it appears in more curly hair, and I originally was inspired by my hairdresser who has straight blonde hair in a cut similar to Angie's first pictures. I would take you to her if you could only pop over :-)!

Suz, did you ever see the movie French Kiss? Meg Ryan's haircut in that film is my idea of the perfect girly tomboy look--artlessly spiky and just sweet enough. I've worn it many times in the past and always loved it. Lately I'm feeling drawn to that look again. I think it could work for you, too, but maybe it's too messy, or too much hair?

Thanks so much for all your input, friends. Much appreciated! This will ALL be fodder for my conversation with my stylist.

Maneera, what you've showed here are all slightly longer versions of what I have (less so, pic 3, which won't work on me because my hair's too thick -- I will have "bubble head" all the time without a lot of layers.)

I think the last photo Angie showed is similar in that respect -- it's basically the same cut as I have now with a bit more length on one side. That one looks easiest to try - it would require a few months growth but not a lot. The risk is that it may not work with my hair's texture.

Carla, the Robin Wright style is a good thought because her face is a similar shape (though our features are quite different and I'm more "forehead dominant" vs. jaw dominant, if that makes sense). Again, the overall shape of the cut is really similar to what I have now. But the thickness of my hair makes an exact copy pretty much impossible. Her hair looks a lot finer and thinner than mine.

Jeanie, thanks for those pictures! I like choppy bobs a lot, but they don't like me so much. I can try to dig up photos of my hair in those stages of growth.

My hair's not actually much shorter than the Kaley Cuoco first picture right now (it has grown out quite a lot this summer). It would require a bit more growth to get a look like that but not a lot. But I don't think that would feel like a change -- just a slightly messier version than what I usually wear. (And I do sometimes wear mine messy as it is.)

Neelie, I love the Annie Lennox look but am saving it! When I decide to go grey, I'm going to chop it all off like this as I grow it out. So that is a dramatic change that will happen in its own good time. For now, I want a different dramatic change.

So far I have: keeping asymmetry of some kind, keeping some length, keeping my colour (more or less), aiming for DRAMA.

(You can flat iron "bubble head" actually. Inge has VERY THICK HAIR and unruly hair that smoothes out quite well with product and a flat iron).

Suz, you will need more length than you think - as I learned myself this year - so don't chop. Drama means more length in certain places. Grow the front and persevere with the in-between stage. It will take longer than you think too. At least, this was my experience.

I don't have hair advice per se, Suz, but I just wanted to say that your hair has been looking great in all your WIWs. Could be that it's a wee bit longer now, maybe Angie is right to keep going with it. I like the assymetrical look too. Lots of great ideas here to consider. Have fun
