Hair: go straight or stay curly?

Hello ladies!
I have a haircut coming up tomorrow!
Jus wondering if you think this haircut looks good or bad or just ok (see photos). If you say “it looks bad” that’s fine. What would you suggest?

I am thinking about growing it out long again, but with shorter locks at the front, and keeping the waves going.

The problem is that it looks a little messy at the back. Part of the mess is that I was lying down on the couch for a bit before I took these photos.

For years I have either blow-dried my hair straight or worn it in a pony tail. But for the past 3 months I have been wearing it down every day, and wavy. I’m still confused about whether this looks good, or looks like a hot mess

So back to the question: Would you suggest I keep the waves (including the mess) and get my hairdresser to cut the front a bit shorter?

Or get a Jennifer Anniston style haircut? (Layered and straight)?

Or stick with the same and get a trim?

Looks thick and healthy to me. Curly hair is having a moment (I see a lot of curly haired models with a fringe these days). As you can tell from my avatar and WIW picks, I've got curly hair, but wear it in a short-ish style. I just couldn't be a slave to a blow dryer and straight iron! I find fringes hard to deal with though, and don't get mine cut any shorter then the tip of my nose!

If you keep it long, but get a few layers cut on the lower third, it might release more curl, let you tie it up, and still wear it straight. I think long waves works better with your style (per your posts to this site) better than straight.

Your hair looks great. Maybe ask for some long layers to help define the curls? I wouldn’t do much with it though as it already looks lovely.

My hair is similar to yours; more than wavy but not quite curly. I go to a "curly cut" specialist for cuts. She takes a long time to cut my hair as she really looks at how each section curls and waves and works this into the cut (she cuts my hair dry). I do have some layers to help release the curl (as Runcarla noted). It might be worth it to find someone who specializes in curly hair if you are planning to wear your hair this way more often.

Molly MAC : I actually DO go to a curly hair specialist now! (First time was 3 months ago.) She actually suggested getting a wet cut last time, so that i have the option to blow dry. So maybe the results would be different with a dry cut.

Your hair already looks great (of course I might be biased since it is similar to mine ;). You might want to bring in some pics of styles you like to your stylist to give her some ideas. The longer my hair is, the more the curls down, and I get less curl and more wave; just a thought as you consider length.

If my hair looked this good curly I’d never go near it with a flat iron. Absolutely beautiful!

So yes to curly! But some layering at the front could be a good idea.

Your hairs natural movement is enviable.:)
Have you worn it down with your natural wave and long layers all over, while keeping the length.
That way you have the option of smoothing it out if you want to change it up.

It’s a gorgeous head of hair! So thick and the wave looks nice because it’s uniformly wavy. Jealous! My hair is wavy in some spots and not in others, so it just kinda sticks out...

Your hair is pretty! But I get it. My hair is also wavy and when it’s long... well long wavy hair just doesn’t have that controlled look that it seems to have on tv...

Smittie, you have spectacular hair. We straight-haired people could spend a fortune on product and still never achieve waves like that. Keep the curl!

If the hair in back feels like "too much" ask about a beveled cut (as runcarla suggests). Removing some of the bulk from the sides and back should help you get some of the "control" that rachylou mentions and discourage it from poofing out. (I do the same thing when my hair is bob-length. I keep trying for a true blunt cut, but my hair is thick enough that a blunt-cut bob weighs my features down and makes me feel like a big triangle.)

I love the look of a mane of curly hair, but I know a lot of my curly-haired friends feel better about their locks when they're "tamed" a bit. Your current look reminds me of Tatiana Maslany (Canadian actor who's famous for starring in Orphan Black), if you want some celebrity inspo pics to browse.

Definitely keep curly! Layers would be good but in my own experience (although my hair isn't as curly as yours, more wavy) not too many. And a good curly product would help define the curls. Gorgeous hair!

I fought my thick curly hair for so many years — now I wish I had a bit more thickness and curl. I can get it curly by air drying, especially in humid weather, but it’s now oddly straight in spots in front and curly in the back. It is maddeningly inconsistent — I have the kind of hair that never looks the same from one day to the next, even when I wash and style the exact same way.

So I say enjoy your hair’s natural texture! It looks awesome.

If my curls were as controlled as yours, I would not think about straightening. You don't look messy. My vote is for keeping it wavy, even though I understand I'm condemning you to a lot more effort (not to mention product) to keep it looking good.

I LOVE your hair!

So, I don’t know how to cut/ trim to best advantage, but generic I advise discussing with stylist or experimenting ( hair grows back!) what length, layers etc make it easiest for you to maintain and style, to get the right mix of “ practical “ and final result. Not expressing that very well— but, sometimes there’s a gorgeous look from the salon that is hard to reproduce IRL , vs a few modifications that translate better- in length or shape or whatever.

Anyway, if this is you just up from lying on the couch— plonk!

I love it! I am totally biased, as I am a fellow wavy person, and I've learned that going with my natural texture is a million times easier and results in a more unique look. Sounds like you've already found a hairdresser that specializes in curly... that is 90 percent of the battle. Don't be afraid of products, either... they are key for curls. Not that your hair looks like it needs anything at all to look great!

These are pretty much perfect waves IMO! If you are interested in more curl, I bet your hair would love curly girl method (lots of info online about this - for me gel is key). I personally think waves are just as nice and yours are very consistent and have that ‘effortless perfection’ thing going on.

We can swap hair if you like.I agree with Angie ,it would be a shame to lose your crowning glory.Just a trim and a reshape but don’t lose a lot of length,in fact I’d probably grow it longer if I was you.
