Hair - change or stay the same?

Hi All

After a trip away my hair has been frustrating me, but it may be that salt water, hats, heat and beach laziness has got on top of me. I have a cut/colour appointment next week.

I have attached a few pics of different hairstyles on me over the last while, and a few that I like from my pinterest board.

My hair is
- oily
- wavy
- coloured - highlights on top of mousey blonde - not much grey coming through so I do get dark roots
- relatively thick

I wash every second day and sometimes blowdry, sometimes airdry.

I don't like pixie cuts on me, anything too straight or structured, and I prefer a more natural style. I want a hairstyle that suits my personality and my Flamboyant Natural look.

I am quite lazy with it - I will be truthful. But I strive to be more elegant - but still casual:)

Interesting - you can wear your hair at different lengths and they all look good ! I really like a chopped slightly longer bob for you - which of course won’t address sun and salt distressed hair Keep it Chic showed the back of such a cut on her blog yesterday - so cool .

Sally, I’m in a similar hair color as you and also have a bit of a square shaped face. But I’ve gotten into (last two months or so) a grow it long phase. I think it’s almost a reaction to my stylist wanting it shoulder skimming and my rejecting that plan. Our last agreement is long layers. (I think I fooled him by discussing Nietszche when he wanted to chop off all the extra.)

My favorites are 5-7, so I guess that means I like it a little longer. (The roots don’t bother me FWIW)

I think your hair looks so cute in #8--but, then again, I thought you'd gone shorter. Is your hair pulled back in that pic? With that in mind, I favor photo #1. Maybe also use some curl enhancing product to get the most texture?

Emily - I should have labelled them!

8 is last week, and 11 is a month or so ago.
5 6 7 10 are when I had a bob about two year ago
9 is the oldest and pulled back into a small pony tail.

Haha UmmLila!! Funny how some hairdressers keep trying to tempt you into shorter and others err on the long side.... Yes I definitely have a square jaw and a wide face, and a short neck. Too much hair and I look crowded, too little hair and my head feels too big. Funnily enough I never minded my hair in a pony tail but really don't like myself with a pixie.

I like you in shorter cuts (well, you look great in all lengths, but that's my personal preference), so I think you'd look great in #3. But then, it'd be a pain to grow out if you get tired.
Alternatively, I really like #8, so I suggest to not change too much!

I like all the styles you show, but my favorite is the chin length bob a la 5,6,7,10.

I am currently sporting at the shortest pixie I've had, and loving the ease, but it isn't the most versatile cut. And I tried growing it out last year and failed miserably.

I have always admired your hair; I think the cut works well. Out of all of these, I prefer the ones on the longer side.

Although I like the color you have, if you want to change things up, maybe consider keeping the cut but changing the color?

I think your hair is looking great. As I mentioned in your holiday pics. If you wanted a change I would be tempted to go a little longer. Maybe the bob in 6 but with more asymmetry (front or sides). But I am totally unimaginative when it comes to hair. Others will have better advice I am sure!

Can you consistently get #6 with minimum styling? If so, it looks gorgeous to me.

You look GORGEOUS in #6. I realize that it may not be easy to keep it look that way, but how about a little more asymmetry, as suggested by Brooklyn?

I love all these looks on you!!! Particularly when they're a bit messy/undone. I love a deep part and sort of "flip" - like Riawna Capri has made famous https://cdn.cliqueinc.com/post.....640x0c.jpg

For color, you wear that "rooted" blonde look so well. Do you do foils or balayage? If you're doing one, maybe try the other (though foils are harder to keep up with since they'll create a harder line as they grow out)

And if you don't want to change up cut or color, sometimes playing with some new products can give you enough of a shakeup. Living Proof, Oribe, and R + Co are a few of my favorite lines.

Looking at your inspiration pictures, it sounds like my hair wants & needs are similar to yours. I recently cut my naturally curly wavy hair to above the shoulders, so feel free to look at my recent posts for ideas

My hair is maybe slightly more curly than yours, but there is still some wave to it that my current haircut embraces (the hairdresser cut it dry, so that he could cut layers that work with the natural direction of the hair) . I also don't like to spend too long on it, so I just use light moisturising oils in the mornings (if I've slept on it funny), leave in conditioner after a shower, & maybe some control paste if I want hold during a blow dry. I go to the gym regularly, so my scalp gets oily & I blow dry my hair maybe twice a week, but otherwise air dry & use minimal product. I also have somewhat thick hair (it used to take 5-6 hours to air dry but the hairdresser thinned it out a little to get the short layers on top to lift, for more volume at the roots).

Also if you're looking for something for salt & beach laziness that still suits you flamboyant natural style, have you considered adding a small silk scarf/ turban band to your tresses, for that put together but still carefree look? You could play around with proportions - keep some strands near the front of the face, or try different positions on the head. Just a lazy thought, lol

You could go short or longer and look great but I prefer the longer cuts of 5, 6 and 10. I think the shorter cuts are harder to maintain and the longer cuts look a little more sleek but still casual. Of course that would mean being patient for the grow out phase.

How do you look great at all these lengths?! I like 6 and 10 the best, though, from your past looks. I guess that's a vote for keeping things a little on the longer side.

A good cut is so important for medium-short hair! My stylist knows it has to be wash-n-wear for me, without blow drying or curling, etc.

I like the sideswept look in 6, but that’s the same cut as 5&7, so I guess I’m not much help.

I purposely did not read any fo the comments because I did not want to be swayed by others.

I love short "piece-y" hair. You definitely have the hair for it. YAY for you.

Of the pinterest looks, I really like 1, 2 and 4. You could carry any of these looks. Comparing the pinterest looks to your actual hair cuts through the years, it looks like you have worn cuts similar to 2 and 4 the most. If I have that correct.

You have gorgeous hair. My favorite look for you is Number 5. It looks gorgeous!! So sophisticated. My next favorite is Number 10. That one makes you look fresh.

On a side note, I think changing up your hair every once in a while is brilliant. I look forward to seeing what you decide on.

Without looking at others' comments, my fave is #8. Do you gave it cut shorter in the back, or is it tied up a bit? In either case, that one really works (as do the aviators!). I often find myself in between a pixie and a bob (like right now) and I find the two most important things are 1) keeping it shorter and more clean/structured in the back and 2) making sure there's some angle or asymmetry in the front. One celeb who does a grown-out pixie really well is Michelle Williams, if you want even more images to browse.

I first wrote this, then read the comments, saw I wasn't alone and went back to the picture to try to figure out what made it better. Here is my interpretation: in 8, the nape is free, one can see your neckline. And you have a beautiful neckline and jawline. In 8, accent is on your smile.

Look at pic 6 for example. Your natural beauty still shines through, but IMO the side length doesn't flatter to the fullest. It's a little long, and hits right below cheek bones. This puts emphasis on the lower parts of your cheeks. When hair hits there, it usually yields to some heaviness. Not in your case, but I still feel it's not the best length. Now if you look at picture 7, you can see it's already better because the hair is a little longer and grazes your jawline. But you have such beautiful facial bone structure that lengths in 8 and 11 seem most pleasing.

I think along with Angie and others that you would look terrific in an asymetrical very short bob. Below are some images.

Well Sal I like 6 best, the sideswept bit looks great. Of the inspo pics I like Jed's hair in pic 1 best, but realise that's a bit shorter. As far as colour, like all except 10 as personally find the roots looking too dark there.
You know you look good in all these different lengths I hope!
