Ladies,
Ruth, the dog in the photo above just went into emergency surgery for an obstruction and possible intestinal rupture. She's only 3, but the vet surgeon warned that the survival rate for this type of surgery is only 40%. Keep her in your thoughts, please! She's been with me since she was 4 months old, and I love her dearly.

Oh, I'm so sorry. I imagine the prognosis is at the bad end if her intestines actually rupture but that her youth is in her favor.

Thank you, Glory and Donna. The vet couldn't quite tell from the X-ray if the obstruction was in the colon or the small intestine, and wasn't 100% certain there was a rupture. I'm hoping that everything works out okay. She's a young, strong girl.

You're right, she's still a young dog so hopefully she will be fine. I wonder what the obstruction is - something she ate? I guess you'll find out soon enough. {{{{ big hug inserted here }}}}

Missvee, the terrible thing is that I know exactly what it is. She is just one of those dogs that would chew and eat anything in sight. The object is my silicone Mooncup (sorry, I know it's gross, but it was clean!) that she stole from the bathroom and ate many months ago. I thought that she had vomited it out soon after (there were rubbery fragments in her vomit a few days after the incident), and her X-rays were normal after that. Well, apparently even X-rays can be wrong, as it depends on how the intestines are arranged, I guess. When she was X-rayed today, the cup was there, front and center. It sickens me to know that I didn't catch it sooner, but at the time exploratory surgery did not seem like such a great idea. She seemed to be just fine, until she wasn't.

Still no word from the vet, which is good news.

OMG, of course! Yes she is very young and strong and I know she will fight to get through this surgery with flying colors. Big hugs from me too. Dogs love to chew things don't they? One day our son called us from college (he shares a house with four guys) and said that their dog ate his retainers! They caught him later trying to bury them in the backyard, but they were too mangled to save.

I wanted to try one of those cups about 5-10 years ago (they were kind of expensive then), but figured menopause was just around the corner. I should have bought one and saved the planet because there is no end in sight yet!

Claire, you cracked me up. As long as you keep the cup away from dogs, it's really, really great. It saved me a lot of money (oh, wait, not after this surgery!) and is very easy to use and convenient.

The surgeon just called and she's okay! No rupture! The obstruction was in the small intestine, which also lessened the damage. They'll call again when she recovers from anesthesia.

We have a cat who likes to chew and eat things.....she's been through surgery TWICE!

Hopefully Ruth will be smarter. May she heal quickly! She's a pretty dog!

Whew. When I read your first post, I was worried and so sad that your doggie was going through this, and then...after scrolling through the thread, it was so good to read that Ruth is ok!

By the way, I had a dog who ate one of my hearing aids once (batteries and all). Can you believe that? She was fine, and I wasn't. It was my parent's dog, and I was house sitting for them, and didn't think that she'd just sort of help herself to the hearing aids sitting on the night table while I was sleeping! To this day (years later), I still put my hearing aids in a drawer at night, even when I'm in a hotel and there are no dogs around. My DH laughs at me for this.

Sending hugs and scratches over to Ruth - and some nice doggie treats once she's feeling better too.

Oh what great news! Let us know how she comes out of the anesthesia and give her some puppy love from me too.

I hope you don't mind but I just had a right good belly laugh at what you said about all of your savings from using the cup (except for the surgery)! That is SO like something that would happen to me, being so careful and counting pennies and then having it come back to bite me.

...if it makes you feel any better, while I was laughing with you...the hose from my washing machine detached and started pouring water all over the laundry room floor and it started seeping onto the hallway carpeting, near where I was sitting, typing and laughing away. Serves me right! It's all cleaned up now, but there's a lot more laundry in my future tonight than I thought, lol.

If she eats the food they give her and keeps it down, she can come home tomorrow! The apartment is so empty without her, I can't wait to have her back. You betcha she'll be getting spoiled rotten while recovering.

Claire, I absolutely do not mind you laughing! I am a firm believer in trying to find humor in all situations. Good luck with the extra laundry. ;D
