Fuschia Friday...well soft of

OK, so this isn't fuschia, it's burgundy, but I was inspired by Angie's recent post about turtlenecks. When I read her post, I saw a pic of a skirt that looks exactly like a skirt I already own (and my skirt is about 5 yrs. old - good to know it's still in style!). In the pic, a denim shirt was peeking out from under the turtleneck. Well, I don't have a denim shirt or a turtleneck like in the photo (more items for my ever-growing Christmas wish list), so I decided to try the skirt with my denim jacket (a fab find at JC Penney on a super end of season sale). I love the buttons on this jacket (same colors as in the skirt) and I also love the funky lining. I also wore my brown boots and burgundy glasses.
I probably would have worn a different shirt under the jacket, but since it was soooo cold here today and the jacket has 3/4 sleeves, I wanted to be warm - so a cream turtleneck kept me toasty.

I love all the burgundy touches you've added. They're subtle enough they don't feel over the top. I also love the idea of pairing denim with the tweedy skirt, and I like how you've done it better than the inspiration.

I'm still trying to figure out if I like the length of the skirt or not, but that is probably a personal thing. My eye tends to resist things it's not used to at first.

I like all your pieces but I'm not sure I like them together. For me it is the colour-blocked knit that makes #4 look current. Do you have a knit you could try with the skirt?

I love these pieces and think they work well together. I'll bet you were cozy. LOVE the whole idea of burgundy specs, too. I would really like a frame in that colour and looked last year to no avail.

May I make a suggestion to bring the skirt up to a more current look and give you several more years' wear from it?

If you sew or have a good seamstress, shorten it a bit -- you want it still below the knee (probably) but not quite as long as it is here.

Then, have it tapered so that it is more narrow at the bottom.

I have found, for me, that this is the trick for a longer pencil skirt style. It gives me curves. You have a similar shape, and if you taper and shorten the skirt a bit it won't overwhelm you.

Thank you for your comments and suggestions! Caro, I am on the lookout for a sweater similar to the one in #4, and Suz, I sew so I think I will try your alteration suggestions. I did notice that the skirt in the inspiration photo is more tapered than mine.

I think the skirt is great and will look fantastic if you do that. I did it with a dress last year and it really, really helped to improve the look on me.

I love the texture of the skirt and the color palette. The skirt fits well and covers a lot of your body which is fine, but the material is heavy and tends to weigh the outfit down. As a result it needs balance with a top in a lighter weight material or color.

I like the suggestions to shorten the skirt, but I think it would be cheaper and easier to
emphasize your waist with a jacket structured to do that job. I think emphasizing or showing your waist with a belt or a more form fitting top is key to making this skirt work the way it is right now.

Day Vies, I also have blazers on my Christmas wish list so I could try that, as my first chance to alter the skirt will be over Christmas vacation. Do you think if I left the skirt as is it would look OK with a sweater as in the inspiration photo? That skirt is more tapered than mine.
Actually, altering the skirt is fairly easy - I sew and make some of my own clothes. The only part of altering it that's a pain is finding the time to do it!
