Frye Veronica Slouch v. Ecco

I should have this boot thing figured out by spring. Sigh. I'm STILL looking for something to wear in the rain (which isn't that often in LA.) (Please excuse the hair! Yesterday it was perfection. Today ... not so much.)

# 1 & 2 - I love the Frye Veronicas, but I'm not 100% certain they're "me." The leather is fantastic (Frye, natch) I love the color, and they're just so damn cool - but I wonder if they're just a tad too heavy for me? Can I wear these in the rain? I do think I would also wear these on days it wasn't raining, though, so that's a plus.

#3 & 4 - Ecco Saunter Buckle. They're perfect rain boots, great quality, have cool buckles, nice color ... but with my short legs, is this the best height for me?

I like them both - how do the longer ones feel? Are they comfy?

Caro - the Eccos feel very comfy at the knee, no problem there! But I worry they break up my already short leg line.

Also, at 55, I wonder if the Veronica Slouch boots might come across as trying too hard? I'm no UWP (but damn, they're cool!)

WOW, you are looking fantastic, Tara!! And I love both sets of boots. I guess my question is Caro's - are the taller ones comfortable? The Fryes do not look super heavy to me in the pics, FWIW.

I think it comes down to your degree of comfort with RATE. The Fryes look more solid, grounded, and ready to take on anything. The Eccos are lovely too, but look lighter and more refined looking.

I like the length of the Fryes better on you, but the taller ones aren't bad at all.

The Eccos look great from the side but I can see that they might be hitting the bottom of your knee from the front. I am off Frye boots now and on to sleeker styles so my eye prefers the look of the Eccos.

Those Eccos are beautiful boots. I'd never heard of the brand. It's hard to tell...they could be too tall, but you're the better judge because it's borderline to my eye.

As for Fryes and whether or not they can handle rain, this is SUCH a rugged boot. I wore mine in the snow in NYC during Fashion Week. They take on anything.

Can't speak to Fryes, yet, but my Eccos are the most comfortable pair of footwear I own.

I actually prefer the Eccos, having met you I feel they are more of the refined UWP look that you have.

Ha. I was going to say that if push comes to shove, go with the Fryes...but I'm kind of biased toward Fryes, they're so well-made and I love that rugged style. The Eccos are quite beauteous

Hmmmm... Laura and AG may be right. The Fryes might be calling to me from my imaginary "trudging through the woods while thinking deep thoughts" life.

The truth is I live in LA and any trudging I do is from the car to the mall entrance.

Maybe this is (still) my shopping weakness - shopping for my imaginary life.

They are both fab and I agree with the others that one is somewhat more rugged while the second is more refined. I am biased to the Veronica Slouch boots as I have a pair and am completely in love with them. It is the only item that I consistently get compliments on. I am 53 and haven't felt that they were too young for me.

With these particular jeans, I prefer the Fryes. The knees seem to bunch up a bit with the Eccos, but I still think they are a good height for your legs. Also, I don't think an engineer style is excessively rugged or edgy at all these days - more on the classic side, IMO, especially since these aren't one of the super distressed washes. Like the other ladies, I think it comes down to your comfort and preference.

I keep going back and forth--must be channeling you! Honestly, you can't go wrong with either. I do think that your style leans more toward the classic and the sleek look of the Ecco seems to look more you in my eyes. That being said, I love the Fryes. I think they are going to age and slouch with wear/use and ultimately may end up a little on the RATE side. If I had to choose one pair for you, I would go with the Ecco. I would be partial to keeping both though--if that is an option.

I like both pairs! While I don't know your style, I think the Fryes look slightly better with the outfit you're wearing in these photos. Regarding your comment about possibly buying for an imaginary life: I would argue that you are not, because you've identified a need in your life that you are trying to fill--boots to wear for the occasional rain and possibly other times as well. The fact that the Fryes are really calling to you suggests to me that you might very well incorporate them into your style, because you love them. Could they edge you in a direction you want to head with your style? I agree with CocoLion, they are not too young or trying-too-hard.

I'm biased toward the Fryes (have a pair myself and am 47). I like the height on you and how they work with your jeans. The Fryes do wonderfully in the rain and will age well. I like the leather because you don't have to baby it as much as you do for sleeker, polished leather.

Both boots are great. I especially love the Frye's. They been around for years, which to my mind makes them a classic. No way is that trying to hard or too young.

Go take them for a walk in Griffith park--magically combining your real life and imaginary life! Stop for coffee at the Trails Cafe for good coffee and tasty treats. Isn't that Earthy Urban Chic?

A hard, hard choice! I'm sensitive to leg-shortening elements myself, so I understand your concern --- but I truly think you haven't a thing to worry about with the Eccos if they're comfy while sitting down, driving etc.

And while their are many Frye fans here who will vouch for their quality, I can vouch for Eccos too (such a pity I can't buy them at home!). So not much to choose between them there, possibly.

Angie's already given her blessings to both, but if you seriously have to hang on to just one, I'm voting for the Fryes because they might bookend your hair better, which is always nice! I repeat, though: hard, hard choice...

Hi Tarzy --

First, I agree with Suz that you're looking amazing these days!

It's not that I think one is dramatically better than the other, but:

I actually have a preference for the Frye's, especially at their taller less-slouched height. I prefer the color with your personal coloring and absolutely don't think they look too young etc (over 40 opining here).

While the Ecco's might look *slightly* more refined from the front, IMO the multiple buckles on the side cancel that out and make them just as casual as the Fryes. I also think the Eccos are a bit too tall on you.

[And since you mentioned the leg-shortening thing, in general horizontal details do shorten while vertical ones elongate....]

ps I wear my leather boots during our endless rainy winter and have no issues (and I usually skip umbrellas and often wear with skirts, so they are quite exposed). A layer of beeswax helps protect and keep the leather supple.
