Frye Rory - Really Beautiful But Really Not For Me

This is an absolutely gorgeous boot. Butter soft (truly!) and the heel is perfect. It's simple and sophisticated.

However, they don't look fab on me. Because of my huge calves, I can only get them up around 8", and then you go from a rather narrow heel to a whole lotta scrunching going on - too much. The side view is okay but the front view just doesn't look right to me. I think if my legs were longer and thinner it would look okay Or if I could pull them up all the way, it would work, but I can't, and I think it's just too much scrunching and it isn't flattering.

I think I'd be better off looking for a short flat boot with a wider circumference - something that just sort of slouches, rather than scrunches, so there's not such a huge difference between the ankle and the leg. Maybe the Frye Engineer? It's definitely more edgy though - not sure I want such a hard edge. Grrrrr. Any suggestions?

Bummer! They look so gorgeous too. Are you looking for a sleek, classic boot? For some reason, I can't see the engineers working that well with your style... I don't have any good suggestions (I'm in the narrow calf group so I have the opposite problem). I'm sure the ladies will come to your rescue!

If you're looking for a shorter wide boot, I would suggest the Frye Heath outside zip. Not the same vibe, but a cool, useful boot.

Shana - You know, there is a part of me that is drawn toward the edgier looks, but you're right - at the end of the day I don't know if it's really "me." I kind of like the Munro Tate that Jenava posted for Sveta - they're simple. I think I have to get the exact right proportions though - I think they have to be slouchy enough and just tall enough, and I think the Frye Engineers are slouchy. Who knew there was such a difference between "scrunchy" and "slouchy!"

That's a shame, Tara! They are gorgeous boots. I totally get what you're saying about the scrunching though. I had considered them at one time too but decided that my lack of height and ample calves would result in a less than optimal fit. I feel the same way about the Engineer and Heath--I think you're looking for something more streamlined.

I guess I'm looking for something slouchy that's also sophisticated. Or is that an oxymoron?

Tara, I may be demented but I like how they look on you. Sure they will look differently on a girl with narrow calves but it does not mean that this look is wrong! Maybe this is just a matter of adjustment? Let's see what Angie thinks!

The Heaths are not sophisticated; they have more of a tough girl vibe. Miz Mooz has a lot of those fake-slouchy boots - let me see if I can find a picture (can you tell boots are my obsession?)...

I don't have any more suggestions, but I see what you mean; they look fine from the side, but the front profile isn't very flattering.

I would say look for something shorter? I am curious as to what those Munros look like on...they could be awful, or they could be super cute and understated! Munros are a dyed in the wool "comfort" line, but I know they are well made and comfy, and many of their styles are classic.

The opening is only 12" though. That might not be "slouchy" enough.

Alaska - Miz Mooze makes some really nice boots! Unfortunately they're all too narrow for my 16" calves. But I love a lot of their styles!

Tarzy, I guess I am confused? Are you looking for a boot with a wider shaft (wide enough) that the shaft itself will look more in proportion with your calves because it is big enough to be slopp/loose -- is that what you mean by slouchy? I always though that slouch boots were the ones that were made to scrunch on your legs. I think the rory's are slouch boots, just too small for your calves. If you are looking for something with a wider shaft, I would be wary of most styles of Fryes. The engineer might be the exception, but most of their boots have a 14" shaft circumference and a straight shaft. Depending where they hit your calves this may or may not work (the 8R might work for you, the 12R probably won't). I think the engineer is one of their widest styles though-- wider than the veronicas with the similar look. However, the engineer also has the stiffest leather and it will take some breaking in to make them stand anything but straight up. An 8 inch shaft height hits me right below where my muscle widens out (but is a 12" circumfrence on me, and I have 14" calves). I am 5'8" with a 34 inch inseam-- so they may fit higher on you. A 12 inch shaft height will hit me at the widest part on my calf. Of course, if you really like the rory, there is the shorter model that is a 6 or 8 inch shaft height. Not slouchy, but cute and since you seem to have thin ankles, might attract attention to the narrowness of them. I love the last boots you posted. Is that what you meant by slouchy-- the bit of bunching at the top? The engineers will take a lot of break in before they will flex like that. I have the harness boots, but in a softer leather than the engineers and even the tall ones don't slouch much without a lot of wear.

Tarzy, measure your calf at the height these come up to and see if 12 inches will fit. I think those are adorble. It looks like they have built in slouch.

Elly - it is confusing, isn't it! I may not have the terms correct - but what I'm looking for is a boot that looks good with skinnies tucked in, is not tapered, and is just somewhere between above the ankle and mid-calf (which I think on my legs would be about 8".) Does that make any sense?

oh tarzy, what a shame. I'm not a fan of the Frye Engineer boot - it's a little too "tough girl" for me. Plus, it's not slouchy. Keep looking; your perfect slouchy boot is out there somewhere!

Ok! I think for what you are looking for the ones you posted or a frye will work. A straight shaft boot is probably going to be the ticket. If you like the engineer's looks, you might try the veronica, which are a bit more streamlined by a harness type boot. Measure and see if they will fit. I believe most have a 13-14" shaft, with the engineers being 14 or wider.

I really like the black Dorado. They seem a bit sleeker than the Engineer boot. So pricy, though!

The brown is really pretty too, but I wonder if I'd wear them as much as the black. Hmmm...

tarzy - maybe if you do order the brown, put together a bunch of outfits and throw them on YLF for comments and suggestions...make sure you love the outfits, too, or you'll find excuses not to wear the color. If black boots make you happier, go for it - when boots are an investment, you really need to love them.
(PS I ordered the Rory scrunch and I think I might faint now. lol)

MPJ - can't wait to hear what you think of the Rorys! I think on a thinner calf they'll be amazing. What color did you go for?

I like brown boots with jeans and that brown is very pretty. But black is failsafe for me.

My only hesitation about the Dorado -- do they look too 80's, or too pirate?

No, sorry Angie and Maya - I don't like them on me. I don't feel they balance my thighs enough. It feels like the ice cream cone effect. I just don't feel fab. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm just not feeling it!
