WOW. Culottes are going to go down as the most controversial YLF item for 2016! Lots of passion on the blog post today, which was quite unexpected. One person's love in another person's poison eye. It's all good, and I'm enjoying the respectful discussion.

Soooo, I just came back from shopping with a fabulous client who LOVES culottes (or wide leg crops). She's 60 years young and rocked these J.Crew culottes with the best of them. She's an inverted triangle, and got these in a size 8. (She wears a size 10 on top). She has a larger bust, and is not short waisted.

They looked KILLER semi tucked with the animal print Tippi, and dark BR denim jacket. Trendy, fun and comfortable. Maximal Fabness.

Fun! I'd been looking for wide leg wool trousers a few years, perhaps I should go for culottes instead while they're around ^^ Deb modeled for us a great cuffed pair she found from Talbots which comes in gray (that first one is actually quite gray in person, I swear!) and navy.

I'd be all over them if they were not pleated in front. Nothing against front pleats but they just don't work on my body type at all.

These are somewhat similar to the ones I got, and I was told to shorten them but I was too lazy and didn't bother. What's the PPL formula for these at the moment? I prefer a longer length, as long as it's clear it's deliberate.

I missed the discussion this morning, but those culottes are fab. (For the record, I like 'em, as long as they're short enough and not overly wide -- I like ones that look like wide pants, not an a-line skirt in disguise!). I think they'd look better with heels rather than the flat shoes the model is wearing, though.

I have IT-like tendencies, and I actually like that culottes have a wider bottom -- I feel like they make my narrow hips look more proportional. Are culottes good for ITs in general?

I had a reply on the blog but my screen froze up!

Anyway, I wore my " old" cukottes yesterday. Maybe they need updating but though I like the culotte sometimes. I haven't been all that driven to hunt for a new pair. I still feel quite " out there" when I wear them- definitely not the norm here. And winter is more difficult though I've threatened to find woolen ones and create a warm tights and boots look, it IS a lot of effort for occasional wear.
For fall I wore with the PG ankle strap flat. This has been sold out in the black leather so I thought I missed out, but then the snake texture was added; have you seen it? I quite like it and it's very
comfortable, so I am hoping this footwear style holds on through next year because with the right tops and toppers,I can still create spring and summer outfits with dark ankle pants and the flats. I also wore an animal print top and short black jacket! Great minds!
I still wonder if I should re- hem
them to just below knee to eke out more wear with s different oroportion, but inertia prevails.

Chiming in - although I said I wouldn 't - to say that these are very chic. The look is sophisticated and classic - I quite like them. When we talked culottes this morning, I saw something very different in my mind. These to me are cropped wide legged pants as they seem to be only a inch or two above her ankle. I still wouldn't seek them out nor do I have room in my wardrobe for something different like this but I can picture them styled as you've described and it sounds like a stunning outfit. Lucky woman she is!

Una, length on my client was the same as on the model. Worked well with the right footwear and WITH waist definition (semi tuck).

Lisa, the culottes silhouette is more loosely defined in the fashion world these days. Wide crops, gauchos, palazzos, split-skirts = Culottes.

I am very undecided. I have no clue what to look for in a culotte. Team rectangle with slight IT tendency, sl. long waist and long rise. I haven't tried any.

These seem like wide leg pants to me too (the glen plaid). (I think that's even what JCrew calls them.) I think of culottes as much shorter. Semantics, I suppose, but I would consider trying these because I would not expect to have the visual issues I would get with the shorter ones.

Angie, one JCrew reviewer complained that these are itchy and not lined, and also too lightweight to hold a good drape. Do you agree with any of that?

Viv, FWIW, they were not itchy to my cheek-touch, and my client did not think they were itchy either. Not lined. That's for sure. I disagree with the reviewer about the drape. These draped quite well. You can't successfully drape an inverted pleat in long and heavy fabric without it feeling overly bulky on the body - so personally, I thought the fabric weight was spot on for the silhouette. (And 2 to 4 inches above the ankle bone = ankle length).

Angie, I don't think I actually own a single pair of pants with pleats! I do have a couple of skirts but those tend to either have the pleats starting very low down or else stitched closed. Pleats almost never sit flat on me because my hips flare out quickly and dramatically.

Forum member Vicki has these culottes from CM, and she looks absolutely Killer in them. She combined them with a cropped ruffle tank and girly pumps and looked incredible. (EXACT items in the Finds).

Walked past J.Crew on my way back from casing out the newly opened Nordstroms, and did a double-take and step-back at the Angie pick coulottes in the window. If I had had more time, I would have tried them on. They looked VERY nice!

Another non-adverse person. I still love my zara pleather ones, in fact I'm going to wear them tomorrow, if the weather seems right for them!

These crew ones are lovely. If I wore these colours, I'd be quite tempted.
