? for Amy and other sewers: can I DIY a hitched skirt?

I love Amy's hitched dress here:

And I have been obsessed with the allsaints hitched skirts (photo below) forever. AS is not making hitched skirts this season and in any case the ones I've tried haven't fit quite right. So I was wondering whether there's a way I could DIY one of these? What type of skirt would I need to start with? I'm assuming I need something with some fullness, right?

Was thinking about doing it with my Natalie Portman skirt, which is fab but is a lot of skirt for everyday. It's quite full but the fabric is light and unlined. Is this even possible?

Hi Diana,

Mine is made with a draping fabric overlay. The skirt you've posted here looks like it's one piece, pulled up and strategically tacked. You would need a long and full skirt like your Natalie Portman skirt. Can you try artfully arranging it and tacking it up with safety pins to see how it would drape?

Thanks, Amy! Perhaps I will try playing with the Natalie Portman skirt this weekend. So could I just tack the pulled-up bits underneath to themselves since there is no lining to attach them to?

I love those AS skirts, I have one in that style in wool. In mine, the "hitches" are attached to the skirt itself, not to the lining (there is a lining, but it plays no part in the hitchedness). They show up on ebay.co.uk regularly, even if AS no longer makes them!

Yep. How successful this is will probably depend on the amount of fabric you have and how well it drapes. Should be fun! Use temporary tacks like safety pins. When you are satisfied, you can bring out the needle and thread.

In general, you don't want to attach the outer fabric to the lining except at the waistband. It needs to move freely; otherwise, it could cause the outer fabric to hang funny.
