My Natalie Portman skirt plus today's WIW

One of my favorite Oscars outfits last night was Natalie Portman's tomato red polka dot Dior dress. I realized today that I actually have a skirt that has a very similar look... of course, mine is designed by my mom and not Christian Dior! after having lost a few pounds, it actually fits me again, but the fact remains that I have no idea where I would wear a full-skirted red maxi skirt. (To confuse matters more, it's actually cotton, too). Anyway, how would you style this and what in the world would you wear it to???

Last photo is WIW today... pretty standard combo of tunic, long cardi, straight leg jeans, and moto boots. The tunic has an attached infinity scarf/cowl thingy, which is removable but kind of necessary here as it covers up the neckline, which is a little too low for work.
(Wearing Ringspun tunic, Kenar cardi, Kut jeans, Dolce Vita boots).

Natalie Portman does no fashion wrong as far as I can tell. Props to your mom! I might hem this a little bit shorter to make a midi, and then I'd wear it with a denim jacket.

And congrats on the weight loss - not that you nedeed it, but I can def see a change in your face!

Yes, a white, yellow or turquoise tank/cami and a cropped denim jacket. Sandals on the tootsies. Great WIW today, and good job covering up for work. I love the print and colors of that tunic! YLF!

Rita, I know! So much ironing! (Although to be fair it's not really very wrinkle prone, but has been folded up for a long time - I think once I iron it out and hang it up, it'll stay fairly unwrinkled.)

Angie, I'm not convinced that I want to midi-fy this particular skirt... I prefer my midis to be slimmer through the top portion, and this skirt is very full. I would be able to wear it to work if it was a midi, though... as a maxi, I think it sweeps the floor a little too much to wear to lab, where there is goodness-knows-what on the floor.

And lurrve the tunic today, what a beaut! I like how you keep everything else interesting but quiet (cardi, boots) and give place of pride to that print.

Nice skirt! I love Natalie Portman's style! I think it looks fine as a maxi but I think it would be so cute as a midi skirt too. How about a black or teal tank top or pussy bow blouse, with a white denim jacket on top?

I'm not sure why maxi skirts are so unpopular on this forum. Are they considered outdated? I have one that I would like to wear but when I've posted it before nobody seems to like it much.

As for the midi, the first thing that came to my mind was to wear some sort of top to mimic the Natalie Portman dress. (And btw I have never understood the Angelina Jolie fuss, I think Natalie is the most classically beautiful woman in the world, and talented!)

You could even make it a red top. How about a red halter or a red bustier? Tonal matchy dressing is on trend this year.

Diana, this is a lovely skirt. I like all of Denise's suggestions from Kirti's post. I don't love maxi skirts but I think having one in your closet offers a fun alternative.

Natalie, I think Denise is right that maxis are harder to style and not as versatile. It is after all a lot of skirt! I have a few and it is true I don't wear them as much as my other skirts, but I love the long columnar look and the swishy feeling of the fabric around my ankles, plus they are comfy! I know that Angie has a poisoned eye for casual maxis - every time I post a maxi look, Angie will tell me to midi-fy it... I have a lot of skirts so I am OK with my maxis being occasional things, and I really do love the look. So elegant and sweeping.

This particular maxi is odd in that it's sort of casual (cotton fabric, printed) and also sort of dressy (since it's so full skirted). I do think it could be dressed up for an evening at the opera or something.

How about shortening to just below the knee? I can see you match it up with a tucked in top and broad belt a la Diana style

I love your skirt! It's totally like Natalie's dress (which I thought was one of the best of the night). I'm not a huge fan of maxis, so I agree with maybe shortening it to around knee-length.
